Eurovision Semi-Finals Ranked from Worst to Best (2008-2021)

- There's a yearly debate about which one is the strongest semi-final. Although sometimes that doesn't necessarily coincide with the most competitive semi-final, some times it just so happens that one semi-final tends to produce most of the hits of the year. So I set out to find which semi-finals over the years were the most unbalanced and have ranked them based on how well the qualifiers did in the grand final! I have included all the semi-finals from 2008 until 2021.
To rank these I used the average placing of the qualifiers from each semi-final in their respective finals. In case of a tie, the semi-final which produced the most top 10 entries would take the lead. In case a tie still remained, I went with which semi-final produced the highest placing entry. Thankfully all the ties were broken at that point!
With regards to the entries I show in the video, I included at least one qualifying entry from each country that has taken part in the contest in these years.
So which semi-final do you think is the stronger one this year? Let me know in the comments below and don't forget to subscribe!

2019 semi 2 and 2018 semi 1 are the best!
I knew that 2nd semi in 2019 was strong, but holy fuck, dude!!
The fact that the entire Top 8 of 2019 (sans Italy) are from the same semifinal is so mind-blowing. To be fair, most of the year's favorites were there (Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, Norway), plus N. Macedonia and Sweden were both jury frontrunners. It's also helped that the lowest-placing qualifier (Albania) placed 17th in the final, which is astounding.
Also, the fact that Australia won SF1 in 2019 only to end up 9th, which is the highest placement among the SF1 qualifiers, is hilariously sad.
I knew 2018 SF1 would be really high up there. I still think this was the bloodiest semi ever since good songs like Belgium and Switzerland failed to qualify and Azerbaijan narrowly failed to qualify for the first (and so far only) time ever. On the other hand, this was the semi that had the top 2 bookies' favorites (Israel and Cyprus) along with Austria being the surprise jury favorite rounding out the final podium.
2019 being the worst and also the best
Shows how chaotic that year was
well that's basic logic and math: if one semi got the best places of 26, the other one would have the worst..
@@stezea406 no, that’s not what they meant
Well, yeah, it's the direct and only competition betwee the two, if one has the 5th strongest semi it will (should) have the 5th weakest.
@@lejzertejzerpejzer1835 no, this video shows all of the semi-finals from 2008 to 2021. 2019’s SF1 was the weakest of all the semi-finals while SF2 was the strongest of all of them
Thanks for this video. This reminded me how strong the first semifinal of 2018 and the second semifinal of 2019 were. I think that if in 2019 Ukraine with Maruv performed, she would probably be in the TOP 10 in the final and the first semifinal in 2019 would be stronger. But I agree that 2019 was very poorly balanced. Having Sweden, Norway, Azerbaijan, Russia, Romania and even Denmark, Armenia or the Netherlands in the same semifinals is already a sign that it will be difficult for countries like Latvia, Croatia, San Marino to advance.
It should also be emphasized that 7 countries had over 200 points in the 2nd SF 2019 (🇦🇿🇧🇻🇨🇭🇲🇰🇷🇺🇸🇪🇳🇱), which proves how strong the songs and performances were.
I believe that they put the countries in the semi's before they know the songs. They could not have predicted that almost every single one of those countries was going to send a banger. It's a random draw, the only thing they can do is the running order. Even in the final, the only thing producers can do is the running order. They cant pick who gets in the 1st half of the final and who goes to the 2nd half of the final. It's a random draw that happens after both semi's. Just unlucky.
You always get a semi final of death...but that...That was a bloodbath!!! Massacre!!!
I never realized how strong Semi Final 2 in 2019 was!!!!!!!!!
eurovision 2019 semi 2 was THE semifinal of death!!!
I still remember 2 nd semi final in 2010!! What a tough heat!! Everyone was very anxious of who is gonna qualify since almost all the favorites of this yeat were competing there
Thank you for watching! I have to apologise for a mistake in the video. As pointed out by Filip Grmsek, the 2012 SF2 final placements are wrong, however the average place is correct.
Do you think we will have a big disparity in this year's semi-finals like in 2018 and 2019, or do you think they're actually much more balanced this year? Let me know in the comments! And don't forget to subscribe!
I actually think they're balanced, but surprises can happen. The first semi may have an advantage over the second one
Semi 2 is so much stronger
Great video and great idea! Thank you for the time and effort putting it together.
2012 second semi: Estonia was 6th, Turkey 7th, North Macedonia 12th, Lithuania 14th, BiH 18th, Malta 21st and Norway 26th...
macedonia actually came 13th, cause romania earned more televote points
Still blows my mind how qualifiers from semi 2 in 2021 did better than those from semi 1
About 2019 semi final 2, Italy was chosen to vote in the that semi final, so the final ranking from 1-8 were all participating in the second semi final
Thank you for interesting video
for eurovision 2022 the average for the semifinal 1 would be 12 so it would be between semifinal 1 of 2015 and semifinal 2 of 2021 and for the semifinal 2 it would be 14.5 so it would be between semifinal 1 of 2012 and semifinal 2 of 2014
if anyone is curious about this year just gone, the 2 semi finals would place as follows:
- semi 1 - average of 12.0, would place 12th/28
- semi 2 - average of 14.5, would place 22nd/28
Because UK, Spain, and Italy did so well this year (the big 5 had an average of 12.0 this year, 3.6 more than last year!), this result looks like its below average for the semis because the big 5 actually pulled it together this year 😂
This year's semi final 2 is one of the strongest ones, semi final 1 is one of the weakest
I absolutely disagree. The first semi is wayyyy stronger
@@isabelledi3746 wtffff everyone thinks that semi 2 is way stronger
We shall see in a month, rehearsals could change everything
2018 and 2021 semi 1 were definitely the strongest one for me.
I agree. There were also several good songs that didn’t make it to the final because that’s how strong they were
2019 semi 2 and 2021 semi 2 > 2018 semi 2 and 2021 semi 1
I knew 2019 semi final 2 was strong, but I didn't knew it was that strong
In 2021, we all expected 1st semi to be strongest than the 2nd
Same in 2016.
What is your intro?
2013 semi 1!
I like how you're using Armenia's first entry on esc as your intro😎💎🤘
4:52 that transition tho
Jedward legends 😆 🤣
This video has been wrongly titled. Most of the lower places aren't actually bad semifinals, they just happen to be much weaker than their counterparts. In my opinion, the weakest semifinal ever was SF1 of 2011, while both semifinals of 2021 were strong. And we all knew how chaotic the difference between the 2019 semifinals was in terms of final results, even casual viewers pointed that out 3 years ago.
Well 2015 was literally the most balanced semis (4 entries in top 10 each).
3:01 these results are completely wrong. Lithuania didn't came ninth and Macedonia didn't came 8th to quote two
2010 SF1 Agree! Just awful all the way from Q to NQ songs! 👌
3:00 Something's wrong with the numbers here
SF 2 of 2016 is actually the worst semi final ever for me (yes, worse than SF 2 2018 or SF 1 2019) Well, RIP
For me the strongest and weakest semi finals come from the same year: 2018. I think it's pretty obvious which is which. 😂
Chanel is the best.
