- I’d been looking forward to watching Doctor Who ‘The Daleks’ in full Technicolor all day yesterday and it didn’t disappoint.
It was wonderful to have something fresh from the classic series although for me, it will never replace the original Dalek adventure.

I saw it over six weeks when I was eight . The colour and definition was incredible . The quality of the acting helped it and I thought the editing was pretty good . There were a few omissions , didn't mind the music and the original was written to cover the time slots so there was a fair bit you didn't need .
Very enjoyable and great to have something special for the 60th Anniversary. I’d love to see the whole 6 episodes colourised one day. They did a great job.👍😉
More fallout (pun intended) from RTD's Buffy complex.
Thought it was a wonderful idea to colourise and make it 'feature length', but while I loved the colour I found the cuts more than a little extreme (no denying a new pace though) and the new music didn't work for me at all. Watching again I realised the music wasn't large enough in terms of vision. I tried The Daleks in colour with the Who-inspired 'soundtrack' Bibliotapes album The Edge of Destruction and it changed what I was watching completely and for the better. Things began to look weirder and more magical at a stroke.
It was interesting to watch and it was good to have something newish for the 60th Anniversary but it will never replace the original. I would definitely like to see the whole unedited version colourised one day. 👍😉
The creative choice to, basically, throw out the actual on-set colour photographs we have of the serial, actual photo reference, and instead paint it with a variety of colours that are perhaps "in-universe" aesthetically pleasing but don't reflect accurately how the sets were actually painted, is maybe this efforts big fault for me. I'm not wholly against colourising black and white Who to offer audiences an alternative version, but whereever possible they should follow the reference materials to provide a natural colour pallette. After all, when Doctor Who eventually started shooting in colour, they were working with the colours on the set, not tweaking them afterwards to represent something different.
You’re absolutely right. It was good for what it was and also nice to have something special for the 60th Anniversary. Lots of the colours used for the filming of the original storey were chosen because they look more effective in black and white. It will never replace the original. I love the story.👍😉
They did a good job considering the limitations of video technology back then . ( ie 640 (horizontal pixels) by 480 (lines)
They did an amazing job. Even the model shots of the city looked really good. A nice nod to the origins of Doctor Who but this new version will never replace the original.👍😉
The flashbacks really killed it for me - not everyone has TikTok Brain and need reminding of incidents which happened less than 10 mins ago.
Yeah, the flashbacks seemed totally unnecessary. They shouldn’t have cut so much of the first ever meeting with the Thals. One of the disappointing things about the edited version was that it no longer felt like an adventure because it was so rushed. Thanks goodness we still have the classic series.👍😉
The replacement music was shockingly bad!
I thought the music was alright-ish😂 and Mark Ayres did a decent job considering the whole episode was edited to bits. This new version will never replace the original and although it was nice to have something “Special” for the 60th Anniversary, I doubt I will watch it again. I would always watch the original instead. Talking of music, I loved
Murray Gold’s original soundtrack but his new stuff in the Specials has been disappointing. 😉👍
My issue with the colourised story was the music. At times, it is too fast for the pace. They got back the original actor David Graham to do the voices along with Nicholis Briggs . As for the ending of AAIT&S perfect.
It was a good night but I really think they could have done more, especially as it was the 60th Anniversary. I loved the music. Yeah, I heard later that David Graham came back to voice the Daleks. It would be great to have him in the new series playing the old Dalek voice. Great cameo by 15. That scene always gets me.😉👍

I watched it on live tv on BBC 4 but it is also on BBC iPlayer and available for preorder on Blu-Ray and DVD.😉👍
I'd give it 9/10. The model shots were absolutely amazing, the jungle set completely came to life and I loved the new music. Did feel slightly rushed but it doesn't really affect the story too much.
For what it was, I’d give it 9/10 too. I loved the colourised clips at the end of the story. A nice touch.👍😉
Given all the factors 4 maybe 5/10 for me. I think the colourisation was the only good from it.
This new version will never replace the original which could also do with some TLC. It was just nice to have something special for the 60th Anniversary.👍😉
I enjoyed it👍. This is the way to introduce the young 'uns to b&w Classic Who. As a gen x'er with a lenghty attention span I prefer the original version. The colour trailers looked good. Would love to see The Aztecs in colour . Thought David Bradley was great in the edited An Adventure in Space and Time. Nice cameo by Ncuti at the end👍. Looking forward to Saturday and the Star Beast.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, it will never replace the original but it was a nice “all my love to long ago” moment. I think Doctor Who night could have been better but what do I know. 15’s cameo was a nice touch. That final scene always gets me. The Star Beast?🤔😂👍

It would be nice. One of my favourites. The Peter Cushion movie is amazing but I love the fact that the tv version uses real London filming locations. Would look wonderful in colour.👍😉
It was nice to see as a curio but the music and editing became a bit jarring.The colourisation was amazing though.

The soundtrack ruined it for me. As someone who has never seen the original Daleks ( I would have done but I decided to wait for the colourisation ) I now so not know what the original soundtrack was. But I do know what the new soundtrack is, and it definently is repetitive, all parts sound the same, and it doesn't fit with the audio of the actors.

I wasn't really that taken with it. As much as anything, I prefer the black and white to the colour. I'm used to it. I also prefer not to have it chopped up to make 7 episodes the length of 3.
It was nice to have something from the classic era for the 60th Anniversary but it will never replace the original.
I love the black and white stories. I enjoyed the colorised version for what it was but I doubt I will watch it again. I will always go back to the original which feels more like an adventure which you are part of. 😉👍
Hi don’t agree with change to adventure in space and time
I was happy for a change but it should have been the current Doctor, David Tennant. It kind of didn’t make sense with Ncuti and William Hartnell. Oh well.👍😉🎄

The colourisation great. Did notice more. I did notice that Barbara got caught in a lift.and the thals were shirtless under the blue thing.

The transition - Im fine with that but shouldnt be done outside a special feature and the transition looks odd. The B&W part looks dire in comparison to original episode.
They should finish the rest of the 25 minute episode version before attempting another.
Or start smaller like smugglers clips and orpganed episodes that have or likely to get their missing episodes animated anyway.
The tardis on skaro - honestlt looked more like an animation.
The death ray should have syayed the same. Fits people surviving better imo.
Parts 3 onwards felts rushed as hell.

All of Pertwee's stories were returned to full colour years ago, most using a technique that restored the original colour. There's no need to do that at all. You can literally buy all of his stories in pristine colour.

Tristram Cary's original electronic score was deemed too sophisticated for today's children/non-binary/LGBTQ audience.
Nice subtle tinkering with the original theme too. I like the clever use of "flash backs" for the intellectually challenged.
I just wish they could have inserted a cameo of Rwandan-Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa winking at us before the closing credits.
I guess I'm just a glass half empty kind of guy. (sigh)
😂😂 I definitely enjoyed it for what it was but it will never replace the original. I wouldn’t mind a second watch. I was tempted to buy the DVD but not with that dodgy Dalek cover. 😂👍
You just about summed it all up
The music was far too loud, couldn't hear a word of the dialogue, very disappointing. The picture restoration was excellent.
The mix was fine with normal compression and sound levels. I even listened to it in mono and it was clear. You might want to check your speaker levels.

I don't mind colourisation of old stories as it can add new life to them. I was thinking they were doing it by episodes not an edited down version which is irritating.

@@mastersjoke there was some issues I had with the edited down version. It became choppy as scene jumped and then bang it was like they turned a 7parter into a NuWho episode. What irritated me more was the flashbacks - my god not everyone has TikTok Brain 😂. I agree if they colourised the entire 7pt story it would be worth it.
@Mark-nh2hs You are so right about the TiKTok Brain mentality. Thinking about it, everything which was made for the 60th Anniversary seemed to be aimed at new viewers or the young. The documentary on BBC iPlayer didn’t seem to be very in depth. It seemed very rushed. I guess it has to be these days which is a shame.😉👍
I didn't like the way it dipped in and out of colour at the start and the music was too overpowering at times, other than that I liked it.
I thought the black and white part of that looked dreadful and way worse then the actual episodes.
I watched the original the night before and the beginning of the episode is not in the best shape. It would be good if they tidied up the episode and hopefully colourise the whole story for a future release.👍😉
I found it pretty decent, wasn’t a fan of the music, some of the music was fine but a lot of the time it was overdone. I feel like some important bits was left out, which is a shame.
Definitely lots of important parts were missing and it seemed rushed in places and less of an adventure for the viewer. I liked it for what it was but it will never replace the original.👍😉
For everyone who mentioned the soundtrack, you didn’t have your TV sound configured correctly. It was fine. One thing I’d forgotten was how devious Doctor one was, I was too young to realise that first time round.
So... how should I configure my TV? I thought the soundtrack/audio was pretty poor in places.

It seemed really rushed at the end and to be honest, it didn’t make complete sense to me, probably because I know the original ending. Definitely needed to be a bit longer. I enjoyed it for what it was but I think I will stick to the original.👍😉

Really? That is what I was worried about when I saw the colourised images with Barbara’s bright pink top but It looked fine on my tv.
Seriously over-cooked colour and some very unpleasant colour choices, odd flashbacks, a very truncated narrative, some truly dreadful new music, some utterly pointless redubbing... I was looking forward to it but came away seriously disappointed. It looked amateurish at best. File under ‘pointless’.
