  • This video will guide you through the basic configuration of a Cisco switch. The model used is a 3560 layer 3 switch. To keep this video from going too long, this video will only cover the basics so that you can access the switch over the network and no longer need a console cable to finish configuring it. This video covers the following areas:
    - What's needed (i.e. cables)
    - Physical connections
    - Network Topology
    - Discuss Different Modes (i.e. privilege exec mode)
    - Set Hostname
    - Set IP Address for VLAN
    - Set Password for VTY
    - Set Enable Password
    - Set service password-encryption
Please let me know if you have any comments or questions and I will do my best to help. If you found this video helpful, please like and subscribe. Thanks!

Thanks so much man, you actually explained what's what so I really appreciate it! Most of the videos on basic switch configs people just run through commands but for beginners it's hard to understand what he's doing.

I use the usb to serial port adapter as my mobo doesn’t have serial port access. Console away I am 😁

    Great walk through, talk through.
Your video enabled me to successfully setup a 3560 switch, with my Autonomous AP, and give the devices a second life.
    Especially the Telnet capability

When I type the "enable" command I get (Unknown cmd: enable) Can anyone tell me why I am not able to change to privileged mode "switch#" prompt when I type enable? What would cause it to not recognize the enable command?

Did you forget about the serial port properties?
From the official Cisco Installation page:
Configure the baud rate and character format of the PC or terminal to match the console port default characteristics:
    9600 baud
    8 data bits
    1 stop bit
    No parity
    None (flow control)
