    David thanks heaps for actually showing everything slowly and the great explanation both the hardware as well as the software and commands. Too many people do videos and they type everything so fast is difficult to know what is going on. Your video is absolutely awesome! Easy to follow as well. Many thanks!

    Dave - Thank you for the tip about blowing out the console port by plugging the RJ45 connector into the ethernet port of a laptop. This is actually new to me, I've not experienced that before. (thankfully) You may have just saved my company some $$$ & trouble by teaching me this!

    Thank you David!! I'm graduating this April with a bachelor's in I.T. and I decided to jump in and change our switch at work (a small business) from an un-managed Netgear switch to a managed Cisco one. I'm doing several upgrades to our system too. I have done virtual labs in school and your video has given me the confidence and realization that I can do this. Thank you so much for the real-life experience you presented and for explaining things so well!! I'm a subscribing to your channel now!

      Just one teeny correction, during the 'USB Console Port' section, you said that the newer switches have a UBS port, and yes, they do, but you said that it's not "Micro" USB and that it's a "Standard" USB, but that's incorrect, it's a "Mini" USB. Standard is the large USB ends that we're all used to plugging into the back of our PC's and into wall chargers. Side from that excellent video, and much appreciated.

    Thanks for the video Dave.
    So, I did this stuff years ago. I cannot fathom why Cisco hasn't created a "SSH" console port.
    I mean, I know why you wouldn't want to accidentally connect the console to your network. But a simple SSH port on 10.x.x.x or just requesting DHCP (but not internally connecting to the switch) would be highly useful.
    AFAIK, we used a terminal server device for initial configs. You'd SSH to this box and it had dozens of open serial ports, each connected to a switch in the rack. Nothing like setting up 20 new switches out of the box without ever leaving my desk.

    • @davidbombal
      @davidbombal  Před 3 lety

      They have other options like SSH / web interfaces on some devices. But, the most trusted and common way to configure is via the console. Agreed about the console server - I still have a 2500 router which I use as a console server.

    Hi David, have you or are you considering making a video with recommendations for a physical home lab setup? It would be great for ccna or others. Its hard to decide to go more modern like this 3560 series or go older and cheaper. The older have less features/older technology but the more modern is more expensive. There is a lot of choice so to help us and give an example setup would be great!

    Even more fun if you plug the console into a PoE Ethernet switch port. Ahh, I see the problem. You let out the blue magic smoke didn't ya? Arrrgh! I've only got USB-C and need yet another adapter! Son of a Boomer, I made many different serial cables to connect all kinds of stuff back in the day. I had a little notebook full of cable pinout diagrams. Crimped my own RJ-45 cables and used those RJ-45 to DB9 / DB25 male and female connectors. Converting RS-232 to RS-475 & RS-422, etc. Good stuff David, keep up the good work.
