I remember when I was young an Indian family lived across the street from us and every evening we would play outside with all the neighborhood kids. The aroma coming from that house during dinner time was amazing!!!!
I lost my mother last May to Covid. This makes me miss her so much! The thought of not getting to eat food made by her breaks me. Glad you took good care of your mother!
This made me tear up so much. I didn’t have a great relationship with my mom and I grew up eating fast food and peanut butter and jelly. It wasn’t until I traveled as an adult and stayed with a host family in Mongolia that I finally got to appreciate homemade food my host mom made for me with love, as she passed on her knowledge of how to make wholesome family recipes as we cooked together. Now it is my goal in life to be that kind of mom for my daughter. You are so lucky to have that relationship with your mom, and I’m sure she is so incredibly proud of you and happy at how much you appreciate her and emulate her. I hope we all can have that love in one way or another ❤️
There’s nothing I loved more as a kid than my mom’s daal chawal. One time when I was a teen I got super painful cramps in the middle of the night and my crying woke her up. She asked if I wanted dal chawal and I said yes so she made it from scratch right there. Truly a comfort food.
My mom worked full time and managed to cook homemade meals for us 3 kids 5 times a week. I lost her when I was 16, but I am forever grateful for her instilling in me healthy eating habits, like drinking water instead of soda and letting me help her make dinners so that I learned to cook my own meals.
I can so relate to this! My mother is from Greece and my father is from Peru. Growing up I never wanted to eat the authentic meals they cooked for me and my brothers because that’s not what the other kids ate or what the cafeteria served. Now I am 33, and I crave those same meals everyday.
This video makes me think of my grandmother. Food is her love language and it’s through cooking for my own family and friends that I’ve made some of the deepest and lasting connections in my life. That’s because of her. What a beautiful story, Hope you’re doing well ⭐️
😅Thanks for clarifying her pronunciation! I searched “indian rotli” on Google but roti came up which is what I assumed she was talking about but I second guessed because I figured it may be said differently in places other than Jamaica 🇯🇲 where I’m from & where we have several Indian inspired dishes in cuisine including our curry 🍛
Dal is integral part of indian cuisine that western cooks/chefs/foodies overlook very when they try or cook indian food.. its something thats our own.. we normally eat dal rice and some vegetables preparation everyday for lunch and dinner.. growing my mother also ensured that we have some dal everyday. Almost all dals r rich in proteins hence important in vegetarian meal.
How wonderful, I grew up in the fifties and my mother worked as well. She always made sure that we had good meals to eat on during the week I miss her. Have a great rest of your week
This is beautiful. Seeing you with your mom touches my heart deeply. Because of you mom. I say that to myself a lot when I cook now or give my children advice. I hear my mom. I lost my beautiful mom November 2020 and it’s a hurt that has not lessened one bit since. Thank you for sharing your beautiful mom with us. ❤️
That’s how I feel about taking things for granted in my childhood but we were kids. So many parts of us weren’t developed yet and they know that ❤. But now you can give it back to her ❤
wow Nisha, this hits hard as a vegan Indian as well. I did not appreciate my mom's insanely good Indian cooking whenever I was younger, but I appreciate TF out of it now! THANK YOU for your videos and efforts! Loved this story and glad your mom is doing okay
Not me crying at 6am to “because of you mom. You taught me everything” 😭😭 I’m a new mama and my baby is just two months, but I have such a deep passion for cooking home cooked meals and want to pass that onto her. Food is my way of showing my love and I look forward to the days where she can stand by me and observe me cooking and when we can do it together 🥲
@@Ella.L. We saute fresh tomatoes and onions along with cumin and mustard seeds. When it is soft and brownish, we pour cooked lentils along with salt, paprika, garam masala etc
I would love more vegan/vegetarian Indian food recipes. I love Indian food and I’ve been eating less meat (I’ve never been a big meat eater). Indian food is just so flavorful and healthy.
This was the first recipe that I followed not only of yours but of any recipe in many years. usually only let recipes inspire what I make but I am really glad that this is the one that I chose because this video warmed my heart like I'm sure your dal warmed your mother's 💜 Thank you for being you
This is a very touching story. So much love can be shared by all generations through a love and appreciation of good food. Nourishing people is love. Good for you for not taking your moms gift to her children for granted. My mother was a great cook, and I can't tell you how much I regret not spending more time with her in the kitchen watching, helping and learning.
I am so close to my mom and I have to tell you that everybody says that your dish that you just made is a lot like our chili sometimes we eat it over rice but God bless you this was beautiful and I would love to try this recipe thank you so much for sharing your love for your mother and her cooking I have one like I said that I love dearly and she's 73 almost 74 she'll be 74 at the end of this month and I am so excited for her I can't wait till she hits her 75 Mark it's going to be a big celebration God bless you and thank you so much for sharing this it really it just it hit me in the chest where it's supposed to I love my mother that much and it just seems like you do too thank you for sharing your journey God bless again from my family to yours
I’m glad I’m not the only one who used to reject some parts of their culture. I used to be embarrassed bringing Japanese food to school which feels silly now because so many ppl love Japanese food and culture!
This video made me tear up 😭 my mother wasn't really there to do things like this for me or my siblings or teach us important things due to her own struggles with controlled substances, but my grandma was always like a mother figure to me and taught me alot of things and I will always appreciate the love and effort she puts into the food she makes us and the lessons she teaches ❤ God bless you and your mother 🙏 and I wish you both the best
My parents would always tell me there would be things I wouldn’t appreciate until I was older. And they were right. It’s a beautiful thing to celebrate your unique upbringing. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing 😍 Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a wonderful day everyone 🌻 So lovely to hear your appreciation of your mum. She deserves it. I wish her good health and happiness 💖
Hi, I’m so glad your Mom is better. But I’m watching you make that Dal, and my mouth is watering for it. Just saw you printed the recipe above. Thank you so much!

Love this homage to your Mum! And this recipe ! l have cooked it so many times over the last year and half. It's a family favorite of ours 🙏 Many thanks to you and your mother 🌼🌸🌺
Just made it last night!! I didn’t have the mustard seeds for the tadka but otherwise I had everything and made it in the instant pot- it was amazing! Super great recipe, though next time I think I’d like to add carrot and celery for some variety in the dal.
What an amazing tribute to your mother!! My mom was the same, she worked full time, kept our home and managed to make a from scratch dinner every night. I always wanted the frozen dinners or taquitos that everyone else was eating. Now I am SO GRATEFUL she did that for us!
