100% single-segment speedrun of Demon's Crest, SNES NTSC-J version, done on BizHawk 1.9.3 Compatibility Core, non-TAS. This run gets the "good" ending by collecting all HP upgrades and items, and beating the true form of Phalanx. Timing starts when I press START at the title screen and ends when Phalanx 3 receives the final hit.
Quite a solid run. It is possible to improve if considerably, but considering all the RNG in this game (bosses in particular), it would really be difficult. Arma 2 wasn't the best, and getting a super quick kill on Phalanx 3 could save another 30s, but that is so ridiculously inconsistent that I'm not planning to get it in a run. Here, most bosses were really good, and execution was decent overall.
I'm certain a sub-40 is possible, but it would require absolutely sick RNG and execution.

Great game.
That's because the name. Angry parents wouldn't let their kids playing satanic stuff. While this is absurd, I keep questioning why did they change gargoyle's quest into demons crest? They censored shit tons of games already... in game, all crest give gargoyle forms. I don't get it.
Also the slowdowns are really strong when the screen is full of stuff.
But it is a great game that deserve more entries.
Just gotta say I randomly played this game on the snes switch download and loved it. Got the phalanx ending so I'm just checking out videos to see what I missed and I gotta say the way you handled that damn head bash mini game just blew my mind. You're super sick with your mechanics bro.

I don't recognize this game. Looks awesome, like a mix of Ghosts n Goblins, and Castlevania SOTN. Not sure how I missed this gem back in the day.

I would change the basic fire since i dont use them too much
i would add so much more level. The game is great but really short. Many power up are quite useless (ex: torando platform or the glue). The only length of that game come from collectothon part. I'm not saying this isn't fun, but it makes the game really short in fact because the length is only based on it. There arn't enough level: in fact there are only 7 levels, the first and the last are a straight line to the end, the five other are just divided in 2 part sharing a begining.
Also i'm pretty sure they would fuck up that game if a remake would be made. They would fuck up Firebrand design to make it appears more like what it looks like in MvC3. They would add shitty 3d graphism and remove a part of the gothic feeling, exactly how they did when they tried to port Megaman X on PSP.
I'm quite sure this game wouldn't be improved. Lucky for us, this game didn't sold well so nobody at capcom would ever think about it :)
I would add a gargoyle change button like Mega Man

This is one of my favorite game series from when I was a kid. I was never able to get 100% I always got something like 90% a would typically miss a single life point. I played all of the series and the gameboy version was the hardest one where you played as firebrand. This was mostly because of problems with the switching of the powers.
I thought the bonus boss was going to be part of the 100% completion, i had to rewind and replay so much of that fight because i didn't want to invest hours in learning it's pattern

Played this for the first time a few days ago on my girlfriends switch and had a blast didnt know there were platformers this advanced when i was young. Wish there was more content and more levels but great game nonetheless.

Remember those I.P.s who were almost as good/accesssible as SMB in the 80s? Castlevania, alexkidd, ghost n' goblins, double dragon/kunio kun, kung fu. They just lacked that something that wasn't mario; or maybe they didn't have the budget to get to the masses.
I don’t know how this game slipped past me. It’s fantastic! However, I didn’t know I was facing the final boss. I only had 1 stone, and hardly any items. Was pretty disappointed because I’m pretty sure I missed out on 3/4 of the game.
Yes, it's a bummer but if you play the game blind you're likely to get to either the "bad" or the "normal" ending, therefore missing out on some (maybe much) on the game's content.

Yes, you just need to jump at regular intervals. Do not jump too frequently or you will sink in.

i strange trick i figured out:
if you die and continue, you get to keep any items you found.
i like to take advantage of that to collect the items underwater at 5:12 and 5:20.
It works indeed but it is a little bit slower. In newer runs, we actually collect the Hand talisman in the first visit of Town (the item at 5:20) without dying, which is tough but doable. It helps speed up the bosses a little ;)

Yes, it's the Boss Rush category. You start the game with the password, beat every boss and finish with Dark Demon. I'll run it soon :)

You need to reset the game for that, so that's why it is not part of the 100% speedrun.

I guess you mean 27:00? It's not a glitch, I just use an Elixir to warp out of the area.

where do you find the green fire and the 3rd gargoyle form?? i went to the boss in min 17:08 without that and is haaaard
For the green fire (Buster) you have to beat the eyeball boss (at 6:30).
For the flying Gargoyle form you must beat Arma 2 (at 14:40). There you go!

Dark Demon is not part of the 100% speedrun. It is considered a new game + feature since you can only access it via a password.

You need to come back to this level later with the Buster weapon (or Legendary Gargoyle), as I do at 28:15.

Was a good run for the most part. I can see some mistakes here and there, which makes me feel that a sub 40 time is entirely possible for a human. Good run nonetheless. I'm interested in speedrunning this game int he future. Where do you recommend I start, besides owning the game.

Sure, sub-40 is possible, but all the luck involved makes it very difficult. I would have saved about 30s if I had got the perfect Phalanx 3 kill, which is also hard and inconsistent, at least for me.
I would recommend having some savestates for the hard tech tricks such as the two Mercury Cancels (after defeating Belth and Crawler), and most boss fights (Ovnunu, Flame Lord, Grewon and Phalanx 3 especially). But you may want to just learn the route and do runs to begin with. Have fun with this great game!
+LeHulk1 just wondering, but would you say that most, if not all, of the RNG in this run is for the bosses and little minigames? I don't know the game nearly as well as you do, but this is what it seems like to me. Item and enemy placement, as well as drops seem to be fixed, but boss battles and those minigames seem to be fairly random. If I'm mistaken, then let me know what else is very RNG-based. I'm interested.
+AllBassPromoter Yeah, I've had some trouble with Flame Lord because his 2nd phase has really irritating patterns, like the quick swooping and the fire droplets, which do a shit ton of damage and usually catch me off guard. As of now, I can only really beat him with one or two potions. I would practice the game, but my laptop is broken, so I can't really play, which sucks.
Almost all the RNG is in bosses. You might lose some seconds in a few other areas (to enemy behaviour, like in the water part of Atlantis), but every single boss can waste sometimes up to 20s if they want to... Especially the second Arma fight and Crawler.

Yes, in the Japanese version, Somulo only takes 3 hits (vs. 6 in the US version). That's the major reason why we pick the Japanese version to speedrun this game. The text parts are also a tiny bit shorter.

why you Kill grewon with firebrand and not with L. gargoyle ? I try every day to Beat this time but my best are 55:00 i think my way to pass the stages are wrong, anyway tou are the best player that i Ever see playing Demons Crest, Congratulations !!

It's faster overall (by a few seconds) to kill Grewon with Firebrand so you get Demon Fire early, and you can defeat Arma 3 much faster with it.

This really isn't 100% though, since you still have to fight the Dark Demon
Dark Demon is not part of the 100% route because you need to reset the console to access him after finishing everything else. He is part of the Boss Rush category though.
So in this category, you don't need to beat Dark Demon?
No you don't. It often confuses people but Dark Demon is not part of the 100% speedrun since you need a manual console reset to enter the code to get to him. Although, there is another category (called Boss Rush) where you start with the code and have to beat every boss, including Dark Demon.

Who the hell was supposed to find the eyeball boss!? I accidentally did the any % speedrun boss order cuz I didnt find any others. Beat the game in 15 min and only had 4 powers. I thought I broke the game. Lol
There's a snow level!?
It's quite common to get to the "bad" ending on your first casual playthrough. To get to the better endings you need to find most bosses and most of the levels' alternate paths.

The 100% route doesn't take into account the Dark Demon because you need to restart the game and enter a password to access him. The Boss Rush category does kill the Dark Demon though.

Still not understanding how to hit somulo twice at a time. On a casual playthrough I can 100 percent this game without death-cheating in about an hour and a half. Headbutt game is easy sped up or cheated on my opinion but I may be wrong. Seems to perfect and off-timing in certain parts but maybe I'm just jealous as someone who considers myself to have mastered this game watching a true master
For Somulo, he only needs 3 hits in the Japanese version, but 6 in the US version, so that might be the reason. Also, this run is far from perfect! It has been significantly improved now: my PB is 38:32 and WR is 38:18. Strategies have become quite crazy :D
@@LeHulk1 That makes sense now I was wondering if that was it. I'm gonna try to get my time down to an hour and go from there my problem is I tend to try to take no damage (except from water) or any deaths which slows me down. Good work though

That's right; the Dark Demon is not part of the standard 100% speedrun route. Although, it is part of the Boss Rush category (where you kill all bosses with the Ultimate Gargoyle).
