Ken Russell, in part of this documentary, says 'they were crap, we know they were crap, we should accept it and just move on'
Having seen some of Ken's products this has given me my first belly laugh of the day. Thanks Ken.

    You're welcome my friend.
It has been said that this is nothing more than a dirt-digging exercise, on people who aren't here to defend themselves. I must say that I agree, some of it is very "unnecessary".
To feature Ken Russell saying "This is crap, forget it" is beyond ridiculous. How far up himself can the bloke get? I don't know why on earth the documentary makers included him in it.
... On Channel 4, the station that gave us "Big Brother".

I love the Carry On movies. When you feel gloomy, they'll never fail to raise your spirits!

Thank you so! Saw a few in the 60's on Sun afternoons on local Ohio TV. Those stations obviously didn't know what they had been sent. I wonder what was cut, as our TV was so heavily censored. My older sister, a serious classics scholar, absolutely rolled over the 2 dumb Britons in Cleo. Famous Monsters of Filmland had a big spread on Screaming - X rated, no kiddies. Finally I'm "old" enough to get the jokes & experienced enough to mourn the actor's troubled lives. Three cheers for youtube!

I guess those four actors were listed purely to make the point about the primary actors having troubled personal lives... which is a bit cheap.

What do you get when you watch a carry on, a bloody good laugh and that is all they were supposed to be the team knew they were never going to win any Oscars.

Frankie Howerd shouldn't be counted. He only appeared twice, what about Kenneth Connor, or Bernard Bresslaw, or Peter Butterworth, were they not scandalous for the documentary. Miriam Margoyles described Terry Scott as 'nasty' so he too, should be mentioned. What a funeral voice the woman has, can she be invited to mine?

I find it truly sad and pathetic if any one knocks the Carry on films ,I can understand in small way critics and Ken (Twat) Russell disliking them as because of jealousy ,as Carry on's will be around forever ,and still love by those who don't see negatives ,but just see the fun the actors are having with a touch of how's your father comedy ,for people like myself they bring back happy memories sitting with loves ones know longer with us ,and when you only had one TV in home with only three then four channel's, but with far better programming the garbage to day, truly sad and pathetic people who were not around in the 60s,70s,80s saying TV was rubbish ,racist ,sexist ,and the rest, yet millions watch TV back then, unlike today, god bless Carry on's .

@ninethenazeing I recorded this when it was re-aired & remember thinking that Ken Russell was a ponce & I even remember thinking as a 15/16 year old "Why Frankie Howard? He was only in two carry ons."

@den10harry What have their (apparent) political views got to do with anything? But I agree that this sort of "guilty pleasure" attitude is aggravating - there were a lot of terrible carry ons but the classics are up there in craft, wit, production values and acting calibre with the best comedy films.

The last time I saw Paul Ross on TV he was presenting on a satellite TV Channel, flogging DVD's. Settling for less indeed. This documentary is a good example of Channel 4 in its decline, edging down the gutter, titillation road. Towards what we have today. The channel is unrecognizable now. 'Carry On' is about innuendo and suggestion. The puerile snobs will cast this aside as poor quality. It is a very fine line that few ever get the chance to balance on.

There is much to be said against the Carry On films (I have very mixed views on them these days) but you know it's going to be rubbish when they mention Frankie Howerd, who as many others have pointed out was only in two COs. As C P Scott said "Comment is free, but facts are sacred". If they can't even get their facts right, you give up. Shabby, cheap rubbish which isn't even worthy of the title 'documentary'. Thanks for uploading it though, just wanted to see it having heard about it.

@iloveyouhunny a second rate "Jonathan Ross" maybe :-)
Comparing Titanic to a Carry On? Who does that? That's like going to an indian restaurant and saying the prawn curry was good but it was never going to be a sunday roast. It's a completely different genre of film! The Jim Carey comment was even more idiotic, considering that he's very comparable to the carry on actors as he's chosen to do a lot of broad comedy despite being a credible straight actor.

  • @Lindelamare
    @Lindelamare Před 13 lety

What a bunch of snobs. "You know you're never going to find a Jim Carey", "They ought not to be funny". There's much more sophisticated comedy in the Carry On films than in your average Jim Carey comedy (at least in the early carry ons).
And Frankie Howerd is more associated with the Carry On films than KENNETH CONNOR? Or even Jim Dale? The guy was in two films!
