    The wonderful Charlie Hawtrey such as enigma and when he was sober a great character actor. He had a great relationship with his mother who used to come on set of the Carry Ons and collect toilet rolls!

    Why does this documentary keep referring to Frankie Howerd as one of the leading stars of the Carry Ons? He only appeared in 2 and they made 31 films!

      Exactly. Hawtry was a very popular happy man in Deal. The fire he experienced to near the end of his life was so sad. a lovely man and much missed character in Britain. OOOHHH young man.....hee hee. :)
      Dear boy wonderful to find you.....

      Rent boy ? I don't know about that and a man is innocent until proven Savile in my book. The locals in Deal can be harsh like all small seaside Kent towns. I heard through a colleague that he was a piss head but lovely when sobber.
      Swearing at Taxi drivers that tried to rip him off no doubt, or smashed windows that needed smashing of course. I hope I don't come across as biased in any way dear boy ???
      Would loved to have seen him do a series with Jonathon Harris from Lost in Space.....:)

      Ha ha. Yes dear boy. We would have all had such a carry on trashing the poppinjays that dwell in Deal. The Taxu company seem really happy to dish the dirt on him. How the feck do they know who was at his gatherings. So what if he had rent boys ? As long as they were over the age of consent then fine.
      Is there anyone around today you would like to go on the lash with ?
      This could be a new site where piss heads unite in a winner takes all pub crawl.... am I making it tacky ???

      Winner takes all pub challenge could be done if all the BLOKES concerned chip in an agreed sum, e.g £20 and have at least 10 piss artists to make it interesting. Last man standing takes the booty and gets a lift to rehab thrown in with victory kebab.
      Sorry to hear about your broken wrist dear boy, the roundabout must have been a right laugh, swinging around smashed out your bonce >)
      Ollie would have been an amazing drinking buddy, I'd like to do the old Wimbledon 8, where you do 8 pints in 4 hours, OK pretty tame but historic drinking.
      Here is my all time legend list for piss ups.
      1. Keith Moon
      2. Ollie
      3. Richard Burton
      4. Bill Hicks
      5. Hawtry
      6. Sid James
      7. Richard Harris
      8. Peter O'Toole
      9. Peter Cook
      10. Dudley Moore.
      How about Ye ?

      Moon off to rehab then and beaten to a pump by Claire Balding and friends. Pryor would be a riot, but high as a kite early no in the crawl, though very funny. Steve McQueen of course, handy for a punch up.
      Sad to hear that 2 of the Wimbledon 8 are gone ? I went on a famous pub crawl in London. Things are a bit blurry but I went to the Coach and Horses in Soho, The Coal Hole and The Blind Beggar in Bethnal Green. Errol Flynn, man that would have been something to what that man go full throttle on the bottle in say Amsterdam or Bangkok... wow :)
      John Le Mesurier and Peter Cook would be on joint duty and perhaps throw in Hendriks for some after piss up blues guitar....... ? Never seen any celeb pub crawl on TV, it would be incredible viewing. If we watch these wannabees eat badgers balls and jack russells a-holes then why not watch them live on the piss ?

    I feel sorry for the guy. He was lonely . The drink was to take that feeling away I guess. He was gay but who cares today. In those times it was looked upon as evil. He was a well known celebrity so very difficult for him to have a relationship and hide it. Very sad.

    For anyone interested in reading more about Charles Hawtrey, I'd highly recommend Wes Butters' brilliant biography of him called Whatshisname. For such a reclusive and private individual, it was a great insight into this wonderful comic genius.

    Kenneth Williams wasn't "obviously an academic" as Paul Ross says here, contrasting him to Hawtrey using the bus. Williams was a largely self educated east end boy, who affected the pose of somebody above it all, and satirized his own snobbery, often in the same sentence.

    • @sertorrhenclegane
      @sertorrhenclegane Před 8 lety +2

      +Camo78 Depends on how one defines "academic". If you mean someone who went to an Ivy League university then no, he was not. If you someone with a vast aptitude for learning, then yes, he was.

    • @joesnow7216
      @joesnow7216 Před 8 lety +2

      +Camo78 He wasn't using the word academic in the sense of being highly educated, he is using it in the sense of being a serious actor who wanted to take his craft to the highest level and work with the best people.

    • @camo7886
      @camo7886 Před 8 lety

      Joe Snow
      I don't know how you can know what sense of the word he intended, and I'm also unsure about Kenneth being a 'serious' actor, a lot of the time he enjoyed doing stuff that wasn't particularly highbrow but made people laugh. He certainly had a love/hate relationship with the Carry On's.

    • @camo7886
      @camo7886 Před 8 lety

      PeterBluth
      That's true. But I'm still not convinced that Hawtrey was more a man of the people that Williams, which I think is what Ross is implying here. Williams may have been something in a snob but he spent a great deal of time on the streets of London and would chat/argue with road workers, shop keepers etc.

    • @sertorrhenclegane
      @sertorrhenclegane Před 8 lety

      Camo78 I can see that. Though I don't think that's what he was implying in so much as Hawtrey didn't care how he got from one place to another where I can see Williams being a little more annoyed with the idea of public transportation due to him being a gigantic hypochondriac.

    02:35 Actually, Hawtrey wasn't sacked... he walked out on the team because of an argument over his billing status in a Christmas special, where Hattie Jacques was given preferential treatment over him. Hawtrey objected to this by stating that with the absence of both Sid James and Kenneth Williams, he should have got top billing. Gerald Thomas argued that he could "take it or leave it"... Hawtrey chose to leave it and thus never worked with him again. The drinking issue was never a factor.

    • @sertorrhenclegane
      @sertorrhenclegane Před 8 lety +4

      +LordHeath1972 That might very well have been the case, but I don't think his drinking helped one way or another.

      Hawtrey had already been burning bridges with Rogers and Thomas by frequently turning up pissed as a parrot and squabbling over his billing. with carry on cruising he wanted higher billing and a star on his dressing room door and Rogers pretty much told him to piss off

      The fact that he was gay at a time when that was widely considered unacceptable, and made no real attempt to hide the fact, is significant. If you're watching a program about someone's life, why would you want specific areas of it left out? If he'd been married to a woman but had multiple affairs, would you complain that his heterosexual lifestyle was being crammed down your throat? I think your bias is showing.
