  • This is an interview with the South African-born British actor Sid James that took place in 1972 for She Magazine. The recording has never been heard by or shared with the public before and has remained private for 42 years. The interviewer is Keith Howes and he met Sid on the set of the film version of the TV series Bless This House at Pinewood Studios near London.
    Sid begins the interview by discussing Tony Hancock and then he goes on to talk candidly about his own career, films life co-stars and family. The interview is both relaxed and funny. At the end of the interview I have included bonus audio of Keith discussing the Carry On films and actors with press agent and publicist Tony Wells.
    All photographs are either in the public domain or are used under the rules of fair dealing and fair use for educational purposes only. No copyright infringement is intended. The audio belongs to Keith Howes and all other material belongs to me. For enquiries please email me launceston79@hotmail.com

    I had often wondered about the off-screen Sid James....like, is he just Sid James, on and off screen? and am pleased to hear he comes over so very well. His comments are sincere, especially his impressions of fellow actors - his un-egotistical acceptance of his status, all show an intelligent well balanced personality. On the occasions I saw Sid play strait characters it was obvious there was more to this actor than the casting folk (or industry type casting) allowed to surface. Very pleased this interview is finally seeing light of day. Thanks KH, WB, and CZcams! KenR.....

I so so wish I had met him before he died so very young. I'm sure he could have gone on for another 20 years had he been able (look at Leslie Phillips as an example of this). You could hear more of a hint of a South African accent when he referred to his father’s influence - perhaps more emotion there. It made me feel very sad when the man said about the carry on films were Sid's pension plan,i wish he had live an awful lot longer to enjoy his retirement,i am sure that alcohol killed him earlier than he should of gone.People of all ages love the carry on films,and people in hundreds of years will be laughing at the carry on films,just like they are still and will be laughing at Laurel and Hardy in hundreds of years time.

      That remark creates the impression that the actors received a fee every time the films were shown. That was not the case. They all received a one off fee upon completion of the film and nothing else. The actors were all under pressure to work to a very tight budget and a strict schedule and anyone one who wasn't up to it was not invited back. James in particular was a very professional actor who rarely needed more than one take. He kept on working until the day he died in order to fund his gambling habit.

      Tragic but true. He adopted an industrial work ethic ever since arriving in the UK in 1946. Sid James and Kenny Williams were the highest paid regulars on £5k per movie (no repeat fees). Guest Stars Elkie Sommer (Carry on Behind) and Phil Silvers (Carry on follow that camel) were paid more.

    Can't hear a thing - volume on CZcams and on PC up to full, and it's a distant babble. Shame - I'd love to hear the interview. Not much chop being a silent video.

      Rusty Fox Hi there, please check and adjust the volume/mute settings on your computer/phone or on CZcams itself as there are no volume issues with the video. We have checked on various devices and as attested by the other comments which have not referred to volume issues. Working fine. Please recheck your settings. Many thanks.

    • @rustyfox2794
      @rustyfox2794 Před 5 lety +1

      Sorry, but it's still the same. I've just watched three other CZcams videos, with CZcams volume at about 50% and computer volume exactly at 50%, and they're quite loud. This one at 100% on both computer and CZcams is still muffled and quiet. Anyway, it's a real shame. I'm glad others aren't experiencing this problem.

    • @kensington25
      @kensington25  Před 5 lety

      Rusty Fox Hi there it could be the volume you set this particular video at your end as the volume on the video itself is fine. I’m listening to it now with no problems. I hope you’ll be able to hear it soon. Many thanks.
