As a competitive dancer of 18 years I have to say that the mistreatment doesn’t surprise me at all; the dance world is very toxic. I’m realizing as a 31 year old woman that a lot of my hateful self talk comes from my years of dance training, coaches, teachers & peers. The environment can be brutal & down right abusive at times. Forget about gymnastics; I competed from age 5-12 & quit to start dance because I would leave every single gymnastics practice in tears. I couldn’t take the bullying & grooming. I’m grateful my parents took me out of it cus it was affecting all other parts of my life. I’m a tough cookie so I could handle the dance world but as a full grown adult now I grieve for my inner child/teenager that went through all the abuse thinking it was normal just to enjoy an artistic sport I have a passion & talent for. Very sad, hope these women get the justice they deserve. Tis’ the time of the fall of the celebrity, get ready for more truth bombs.

Dance world is not toxic. It’s just a platform that shows everyone’s true colours. Nowadays, it’s quite an opposite in the competitive dance world. People would tell you it’s fine to look certain ways. At the same time, they laughed at you about that right behind your back. We are in self denial nowadays and saying everything is fine. But all those problems are still there😅. That’s what’s toxic

Most people who are actually bullied make it a point to treat people equally because we know how it feels when we aren’t. I think she suffers from mean girl popular syndrome. Girls who were spoiled by their parents growing up and got everything they ever wanted, like flute lessons or being able to go to art/music school tend to act like spoiled princesses their whole lives and treat others like crap. That’s what I’ve observed. Big girls are popular mean girls, too.

I don't really know how to put this without either making it all about me or projecting, so all about me it is: I'm a white cis gay man and as such have a huge amount of privilege, but I grew up as "harmless", "one of the girls," and by being gay I was basically grandfathered into the belief that I was extremely leftwing on the basis of absolutely no information. I didn't need to examine feminism or anything, because I wasn't contributing to any of that shit. Then one day I read a comment, thankfully not about me but certainly about types of behaviour I'd witnessed and perpetuated, saying "just because you're gay doesn't make my boobs any less molested." And I realised I felt one way but I looked and presented a totally different way, I needed to know more about all this. And then there's all the internalised homophobia (ouch) because you're raised to be straight, and then I got disabled and got to look at everything from the outside again...
so basically, if you grew up in a racist, homophobic, ableist system, no matter how cool you are, i think you're either carrying it, reacting to it or quietly benefiting from it a lot of the time, and most people are never forced to examine themselves but they're very keen to call out others because that feels really good and makes you feel safer. and this is why it's so easy to perpetuate hate - gay men are not experts on homophobia (or feminism lol) by birth but are just reacting to personal not universal experience, even as we're often called to comment and inform other people.
So I don't think she needed to be bullied to end up here really, but it's very possible that she's coasted her way here on a path many of us take. And it's a little heartbreaking, because being a plus-sized black woman means she's going to take more of a beating than most. Even if she has kind of coasted way beyond to a position of privilege and abuse of power most of us will never be caught on.

These goons do that to people on the streets for their celebrity clients! Of course they get away with doing it to a worker or said celebrity.
The dancer most likely could’ve left but didn’t because she wanted her phone back so, she can try to claim it as being held hostage, that’s a tough one to fight unless there’s proof they trapped her in a room.

I was a dancer in my younger years and lived in LA for a while. Auditions for the mega celebrities do not come along very often because once an artist has dancers they like, they tend to keep the same people for long periods of time and only audition if they need to replace one or if it’s a huge performance and they need bigger groups. The competition for these auditions is beyond anything I can explain to someone who isn’t a dancer! They are brutal and last for hours and hours (although 12 hours with no break dancing non stop is not the norm, you usually go in groups that get progressively smaller until only the successful dancers remain).
Not to mention that you generally don’t even get through the audition room door if you don’t have a good agent, which are themselves quite difficult to get into because there are so many amazing dancers in Hollywood.
There are just not that many paying opportunities for dancers who aren’t at the top echelons. Getting in the good books of choreographers is a way in, because they tend to employ their friends, but a huge amount of the choreographers themselves (the male ones, anyway) are predatory in some way or another and the power imbalance is always the elephant in the room. So I can imagine that the pressure that Shirlene Quigley put on the dancers to convert was particularly distressing in this context.
Finally, I can’t remember seeing one larger dancer during my career. Literally not a single one on any jobs I did or at any auditions, not even classes really. Not on the books of any agency I auditioned for. They are not an in demand demographic, basically.
So I say all this to say, these dancers would have been under a kind of pressure that most people will never face, and even other dancers would never really face. There’s just not jobs for fat dancers. This is it, their one shot at a career in something they love that can actually give them a paycheck and keep them out of the normal life of poverty for a dancer (I lived in a two bedroom apartment with four guys during my dance years lol, and worked in a restaurant).
I hope they get a HUGE payout.

For better or worse, pro dancers in LA go along to get along because they want to stay employed for years. 12-16 hour rehearsals is normal. Everything except the banana stuff sounds like what happens on every tour. The dancers go out with the artists all the time to suck up for job security. It's just what is done to stay a working dancer. These dancers will never be hired by anyone else because they are novelties for body positivity. Drinking on the job and slacking off, then getting fired was very foolish. I imagine they will never get another job. They certainly won't book based off their talent because they are not top dancers, not even close. I feel bad for them, I would never make it in that job, but they must have known this was a career ending move for them

You know what loving yourself and your body actually means? Respecting and improving it and that will raise your self esteem. You shouldnt hate your entire self for being obese of course, but you also have the power to improve and achieve a better look, better health and more quality of life in all areas...and you would feel so proud. Being fit and slim is simply better and more aesthetic and nobody can argue that. There is a natural rejection in people to certain things that are disadvanatges. If you really love the way you look with your whole heart and not being fat would look "bad" to you, then alright...but most people would not go back to what they were after getting rid of excess weight. Are people talking themselves into accepting something they really dont like themselves maybe, because the journey to something else seems to hard? I have massive respect for every former obese person, who got their ish together. I know the reasons for people getting obese are very diverse and sometimes its caused by pain and trauma in childhood and teenage years, but letting other peoples sins against you, or your own lack of discipline, mess with your life, is not something anyone should take.

I think for a lot of us it’s more disappointing than just finding out a celebrity you like isn’t as nice as they seem. If these allegations are true, her behavior is in direct opposition of what she supposedly stood for. Two of these dancers were hired as part of a reality show on Amazon called, “Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.” Every single episode was about auditioning to be a dancer, but also about Lizzo and her existing dance team helping these women develop confidence, self love and self worth. It wasn’t some cutthroat competition show. The women were just there to dance well, and form bonds with Lizzo and each other. It was so empowering for me to watch as a plus sized dancer. Knowing that all of her kind words and actions may have stopped as soon as the cameras turned off is really sad.

This is interesting...a friend that works gigs in Portland Oregon mentioned that they had worked with her before and after fame. Before fame she was not 100% that bitch. But now apparently she won't even let them look at her and make eye contact. She treats people like peasants, and that is definitely not cool. I am joining the 'not a fan' club now. Only time in my entire life I was skinny was pre 5 years old. I can tell you I’m almost 40 now, and that stuff I grew up with really defined how I feel/felt about my body. Even now.
