  • Teaching a puppy to go toilet in the right spot can be a very frustrating task, but with these puppy toilet training tips, you'll see effective results. Even if you've been advised against some methods, the right implementation, including the surprising tip we'll reveal at the end, can significantly accelerate the potty training process.
Establishing a routine is the cornerstone of successful house training a puppy. Understanding when your puppy needs to go, especially shortly after eating, following playtime, or upon waking, is crucial. Setting a consistent puppy potty schedule and taking your puppy outside frequently will maximize your success chances. As puppies have small bladders, they need to go often, but as they grow and their bladder capacity increases, the time between breaks can be extended.
Keeping your home prepared is vital. Pick up any rugs and valuable items from the floor to prevent accidents. By managing the environment and ensuring you can always see your puppy, you prevent many puppy accidents. Recognizing the signs that your puppy needs to go-like sniffing, circling, or squatting-is key to avoiding messes.
Positive reinforcement training plays a crucial role in teaching your puppy to toilet in the correct spot. Celebrate successes with high-value treats and use commands like "go potty" or "do your business" to build a strong association. This method is not just about obedience; it's about creating a positive relationship between you and your puppy.
For those living in flats or dealing with cold weather, puppy pads training can be a practical component of both outdoor and indoor potty training. Using enzymatic cleaners for any accidents ensures that no scent markers encourage a repeat of the mistake in the same spot.
It's important to approach training with patience and consistency. Never punish your puppy for accidents. Instead, guide them gently to reinforce the desired behavior. Remember, effective potty training isn't instantaneous. By remaining calm and consistent, showing them where to toilet, and employing these puppy training techniques, you'll develop a happy, well-trained companion.

I also like to tell people that even if you want to go for a walk or have a play session afterwards, please bring them inside first even if it's only for 3 seconds. Ready for a walk? Make potty time a separate event. You never know when you might have to leave and if they're used to doing something right after, without going back in the house first, you might have a more difficult time. I use a 6 foot leash and go around in circles once in the place you want them to eliminate. Keep repeating the phrase - get busy, find a spot, or use your own. This is particularly helpful when/if you travel with them. Get to the appropriate spot at the rest area, phrase, they eliminate, then you're back on the road. Use treats outside immediately after going rather than wait until going back in the house- just until the house training is resolved. Scheduled feeding times too so you have a general idea of when they last ate, and therefore can gauge when they'll have to eliminate. Some dogs are multiple peers, some go #1 and #2 , some do #1 then don't have to do #2 until 20 minutes later. Get a feel for your dog and realize of course it won't always be that schedule. Hope that helps.

Hey I read that puppy pads just encourage a puppy to toilet in the house.
A friend brought me your book and it was very interesting.

Hi Vince, thanks for getting my book.
Technically they do encourage a dog to pee in the house but on the puppy pads. Then you also show them outside is a good thing and not on the puppy pads is a bad thing. One removed the dog gets it. If you live in a flat they are a saviour. Every answer to dog behaviour depends on many variables opposed to just one.

      @@nigelreed Hi Nigel.
      Yes that makes sense.
I just want to learn so much and I listen to so many conflicting dog trainers and you make sense especially when I am not thinking for myself and listening to so many people who I shouldn't really.
I like your caricature and I appreciate your time, thank you for your reply.
      😁🙏

I have a 6 year old bitch who has been clean even before we got her at 10 weeks old. However we have an issue where she has become frightened of her own poo. She had a few incidents where the poo got stuck on a hair, not her own as she is Chinese crested and almost hairless, it was a hair she had ingested. The poo was hanging and it frightened her. This happened a few times over her 6 years and now when she does her poo she runs as soon as it drops. However it seems that sometimes she hasn’t completely finished and will run inside and finish on a rug. I need to know how we can build her confidence again so that she is not running from her own poo in fear.
