They really don't make movies like this anymore. No special effects... no gore... no blood... Just good acting and good writing. This scene scared the shit out of me when I was 9 years old.

All the kids watched this when it first aired and stayed up that night scared crapless. We all talked about it at School Lunch the next day. EVERYONE was freaked out at the Vampire Kid at the Window scene. But hey the 70s was a different more innocent time and now kids watch bestiality, cannibalism, dismemberment, etc as if it were nothing.

I can answer that last question. If an evil house attracts evil men to live in it, it can also attract virtuous men who are determined to set things correct, to vanquish said evil. That would be reason why Ben would be interested in an evil house.
Even in a public restaurant with sufficient lighting, this was a tense, thought provoking scene. That takes great screenwriting and actors who can bring the script to life.
Even the Hammer Horror films with Sir Christopher Lee as Dracula 1958-73 did not make my skin crawl as much as this movie did in the fall of 1979. Best vampire film ever.

The actor playing Mears is named Lewis Pullman. He actually looks like he'd be a writer from Maine so maybe this will be good.
I remember this 1979 film as a 2 parter which was shown over here in N. Ireland on 2 Thursdays.. I would NOT let my parents go upstairs til this film was over, i'd walk in between mam and dad up the stairs. Even now as a 52 year old woman this CLASSIC still scares me. The Rob Lowe version i just couldn't take too. I HOPE that the new remake Will do both the novel and the 1979 film justice.

“What did you see?” Typically the answer would be vague to elevate the mystery, but Ben just lays it out. He saw ghosts, hanging corpses, and everything in between. I love the way this scene is written.
His casting surprised me, knowing him better for Starsky & Hutch, but his performance was so perfectly pitched. Richard Donner always talked about verisimilitude when they were making the Superman films - to treat the material fairly, with a sense of realism and authenticity. When I watch this movie I feel that very same authenticity behind David Soul's performance.

I remember watching this as a child. We were all in the living room with all the lights off and only the TV going. During the window scene with Danny Glick, our smoke alarm went off as my grandmother was cleaning the stove/oven in the kitchen. Needless to say, we all went 5 feet in the air when that alarm went off.
My wife doesn't like scary films but she loves Salem's Lot because of the realistic characters. They're all great in this but I love David Soul. Awesome singer too
The hand gestures Dave uses when describing his having seen Hubey Marston, "hanging by his neck", as if it were an event just as rarefied as it was inexplicable. Something not to be excused.
To this day, at 32 years old even back when I was a kid in early 2000s after getting this on DVD, I still can't watch this movie at night alone, I can watch it in the daytime alone no problem, but never alone at night. Even just seeing this scene hearing Ben tell the story with this eerie music and thinking about the scenes with Ralphie and Danny Glick, Mike Ryerson, Marjorie Glick and Ned as vampires..still scares the hell out of me. Any other vampire films I have no problem watching alone at night, even the remake of Stephen kings story that starred Rob Lowe, but this version..I can never watch alone at night unless I'm in the comfort and safety of my bed under my blanket with the shades down on my windows.

I know the film is being made by the same people who remade Stephen King's IT. I think they did a pretty good job with that one so maybe the new Remake of Salem's Lot might be just as good as the original. Oh and on CZcams you can find the Salem's Lot radio drama and it definitely sounds like a movie on audio with sound affects and everything, it aired in October of 1995 or 1994 it's really good!!

The Hubie Marston backstory scared the hell out of me and still does. I wonder if they'll include more on him in the remake. I've seen the new title card online with Mears and his group standing in the fog looking at the Marston House. It's perfect. The graphics are very well done and it has a lot of atmosphere. I was a bit skeptical at first about the Alfre Woodard casting but after consideration I think she'll be fantastic. I can definitely see her as a doctor. My favorite part though is that they're keeping it set in the 70s. Yes!! As it should be. The Rob Lowe version of failed in that aspect and it sort of took away from the charm in my opinion. It's like remaking Titanic and setting it in 2022. Just doesn't work. The film should be kept in the original story's timeframe. But yes I'm looking forward to this film a lot. No disrespect to David Soul but Lewis Pullman is perfectly cast. He really resembles the character in the book. Also, I live in Boston and I've been to Ipswich a few times. That's where they filmed. It's a quiet little town out in the salt marshes on the north shore. I never imagined it would be Salem's Lot one day. Very excited!! Fingers crossed hoping the film's good. Peace!

Salems lot scared the beegeebez out of me when i was a kid. After seeing this movie I had to look both ways walking home in the dark going through the woods. Seeing the full moon in the sky and hearing the rustling of the wind through my ears. And hearing something walking through the woods behind me constantly. As I look behind me with my flashlight pointed at the the object it was just deer moving about.
I'd love to know how much Stephen King was influenced by Shirley Jackson's magnificent classic "The Haunting of Hill House" when he wrote "Salem's Lot". It was definitely on his mind; he used a passage from Jackson's novel as the epigraph for one of his chapters. In both books, there is a strong suggestion that evil is a force that resides in places, independently of human agency, and then draws certain types of people to it, whose faults and weaknesses it then exploits to create yet more evil. Eleanor Vance in "The Haunting of Hill House" is a bitter, resentful, sexually frustrated woman whose life the Crain house twists into a parody of all the people who have ever lived there. Father Callahan, and many of the townspeople in King's book, see their flaws -- alcoholism, gossip, lost love, adultery, cruelty -- providing the entryway for the evil of Barlow's vampirism. They may be victims; but they're not wholly innocent victims in many cases. (Some, admittedly, are). It's almost as though the Master Vampire says, "You had already chosen to separate yourselves from the community of man, with your assorted pettinesses and jealousies. I'm just taking that process to its logical conclusion. Now you can REALLY prey on each other -- forever." THAT, as a proposition, is a hell of a lot scarier than a count with an indeterminate accent, in a top hat and opera cape, declining a drink with: "No, thank you. I never drink -- wine."
If you can find a copy, I'd suggest reading King's non-fiction book 'Danse Macabre'. He goes into detail about the connections between Hill House and the Marsten House.
I’ve not yet read Danse Macabre, but it’s on the list. I read Salems Lot as a kid and it terrified me. I was a bullied middle schooler who had just moved to southern Maine and I identified with Mark Petrie more than any other literary character ever at the time. After reading Hill House as an adult, I feel like I have a deeper appreciation for Salem’s Lot. I feel like Hill House and the Marsten House are the same place with different names.
The scene that scared me most in this film when I was young was the scene were Marjorie Glick wakes up in the mortuary. Marjorie starts to move and shake under the sheet when Ben is praying and reading "The Lord is my Shepherd" loud. Brilliant scene. They totally destroyed that one in the 2004 movie.

I'm 53 years old and to this day I still dream about vampires. Watching this movie when it came out is the reason why. It's still hard to watch the window scenes after all these years. It actually makes me angry. :D

Also with hubey marsden , kids began to disappear just like in Derry with IT , and hubey marsden was seen by the David soul character hanging and he woke up , was hubey marsden pennywise , as they are set in the same universe , pennywise in the novel disguises himself as a vampire identical to the vampire of Mr Barlow , are they one in the same or is pennywise aware of Mr Barlow . @Siobhan Cosgrove
I just read the book for the first time … I loved this adaptation the first time I saw it as a kid . When I say I loved it , it scared the sh£t outta me

One of the best vampire movies that was made superb acting by David Soul.
David Soul is just fantastic in this role. He has the character down perfectly. Curious, nostalgic, and tortured all at the same time.

"Salem's Lot" was the first and only movie to give me nightmares as a kid. RIP Mr. Soul. Always a fan.

If you can find a copy, I'd suggest reading King's non-fiction book 'Danse Macabre'. He goes into detail about the connections between Hill House and the Marsten House.
I’ve not yet read Danse Macabre, but it’s on the list. I read Salems Lot as a kid and it terrified me. I was a bullied middle schooler who had just moved to southern Maine and I identified with Mark Petrie more than any other literary character ever at the time. After reading Hill House as an adult, I feel like I have a deeper appreciation for Salem’s Lot. I feel like Hill House and the Marsten House are the same place with different names.

The scene that scared me most in this film when I was young was the scene were Marjorie Glick wakes up in the mortuary.
Marjorie starts to move and shake under the sheet when Ben is praying and reading "The Lord is my Shepherd" loud.
Brilliant scene. They totally destroyed that one in the 2004 movie.

Fantastic book adaptation. It was done in an understated, quiet way, EXCEPT the vampire scenes. Holy gee.

I'm 53 years old and to this day I still dream about vampires. Watching this movie when it came out is the reason why. It's still hard to watch the window scenes after all these years. It actually makes me angry. :D

Also with hubey marsden , kids began to disappear just like in Derry with IT , and hubey marsden was seen by the David soul character hanging and he woke up , was hubey marsden pennywise , as they are set in the same universe , pennywise in the novel disguises himself as a vampire identical to the vampire of Mr Barlow , are they one in the same or is pennywise aware of Mr Barlow . @Siobhan Cosgrove
