Queen - The Fairy Fellers Master-Stroke (Official Lyric Video)
/ queenofficial - Hudba
I love all Queen songs, but the ones they wrote in the 70's had such a magical quality
yeah, I feel that too. It feels like freddie take me back to the middle age fairy tales.
Queen 2 had some great songs that get very little airplay
Agree!
All of Q2 most of Q1 and bits and pieces of the next three. Captured an amazing magical spell feeling, If they stopped recording then and there, its still more than enough stuff to love them.
@Teo Torriatte Creativity made them change. Their collective favourite group was the Beatles. I guess they were taking a leaf out of their book, by changing and developing
The sensational bass by John Deacon
Deacon amazing!
Those bass lines, yes!
And they don’t even mention his name in the description:/
@@idk-ch7hj why do they always not putting his name in the description? I love deaky
Shaira Frye Javier I don’t know :/ I know that he left Queen but by that logic Freddie shouldn’t be mentioned either as he’s dead... is it that hard just to put his name in?
Freddie’s vocabulary was out of this world!
Agree 💯
Wordplay like that is really genius, making utter nonsense somehow MAKE sense takes real talent, John Lennon was great at it, but I think Freddie was better
@@claynovak1251 you’d find a lot of intelligent wordplay on most Peter Gabriel era genesis stuff, notably Selling England By The Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway albums
Yes
Oh yeah
Vintage Queen is like listening to a novel. They were great storytellers and used all of their imagination to convey fantasy, terror, whimsy, and everything in between.
This was by Freddie
Queen 2
Freddie songs are side B/black side
This song is actually a painting and they put words to the painting
@dreamstalker8002 A copy of the painting was on the album sleeve.
Deacon's bass line is incredible.
He was a legend...
@@levisalvini4110 Is still.
a lot of queen songs lose something without the bass, "'39" most notably. you're right
@@shawnflanagan4995 "39" yes .
A completely under-appreciated element of Queen. John really did an amazing job on this. Thanks for making that comment
Roger said : "I never once saw Freddie with a book. But he had all these words about this painting. Fred was like a magpie. He had this very sharp brain but he was not what you'd call a well-read man."
I can see Roger making that observation, you can see pictures and interviews of him reading Jack Kerouac back in the day.
@@TheaterPup But Freddie himself said: "Reading is a waste of time".
Richard Dadd, the artist who painted the subject of this song. Look his story up.
@@danielfelipe1606the only thing in which he was wrong
I swear i cannot stop listening to this song.. So underrated and such a masterpiece
Same
I totally agree with you.
right!! it’s so catchy and so entertaining to listen to!!!
If you still listen to it 37 years after discovering it (me), I wouldn't say it's underrated.
Underrated por quién??
Second album, and they were already reaching these heights of complexity. Composition, melody and harmony wise. Out of this world.
I bet they felt like Freddie was challenging them!
This and black queen on the same album
He was getting them warmed up for bo rap!
I cant help but think its a shame that they didnt pursue this direction. Dont get me wrong, they had a fabulous career, but what if they had tried to become the band from Queen 2 for the rest of the decade? Best prog art rock act ever. They chose to be one of the best classic rock bands ever and that was absolutely amazing, but this album to me is very special. Shame that they felt they should dumb it down a bit.
@@Chadner , they were so good in the second album that many today's rock bands try to recreate that unique sound.
And no synthesizers.
Nothing we have today compares to what they did
They are kinda like the Pink Floyd of the Pop/Rock Scene. I would even compare them to King Crimson.
Greta van fleet is decent.
they are exceptional, no one can disagree with that
Exactly man 👊
Schizoid Thanks for saving me the trouble of writing that same thing.
the way Freddie describe the painting and put the aesthetic lyric it just amazing man and the up beat background music with his voice mind blowing
so well put..no words though can explain the magnificence of this song..I am also a singer....I named my first band "Masterstroke". :)
Mind-blowing is a nice way to describe this song.
Queen is probably one of the most interesting musicians of all time from the speed thrash of stone cold crazy to this, geez
Stone Cold Crazy to Seaside Rendezvous. Incredible.
My Fairy King to Death On Two Legs to Flick Of The Wrist
Queen is a band, not a musician
@@mooopy4887 Well he did said "musicians".
@@juanspeko but they said queen not the members of queen
Thank god for my dad cause he “forced me” to listen to every Queen’s song since i was 4/5 and i today I’m a proud 28 yo obsessed by them.
No hate if you discovered them only after the film, you’re still amazing cause all Queen’s fans are amazing.
Love from Italy
A lovely dad.
Ok i must.
Do you hear that amazing bass line?
Yes.
Do you know who plays it?
Yes, John Deacon.
SO WHY'S HE NOT IN THE DESCRIPTION.
And also so magical song. I love it.
Yes.
Yes.
He's not in the description because it's referring to the solo material, wich John Deacon doesn't have none.
Also, John left the music industry and don't want to be mentioned anymore.
That bass
Richard Dadd. Fairy Fellers' Master-Stroke. 1855-1864, Tate Gallery London
Freddie's just pointing out everything that's on the painting, he was a lover of the arts!
Incredible! Thank you very much for this piece of knowledge! Makes the song even better (:
Wow! Thank you very much for the information, now I have more respect for Freddie and the Queen.
I don't think that's quite all that he's doing here. I think this song has a double meaning for Freddie in terms of his sexuality. You can interpret the word "feller" as a corruption of the word "fellow," and "fairy" is slang for a gay man. I'd hate to sound gross, but I would think Feddie is also the type to reinterpret the words "master" and "stroke" to refer to a private activity. I believe other lyrics in this song will support my theory.
@@LillyTheLonelySock not everything is about sex
Just watch the painting and find everything he sings about.
No synthesizer there! That's the famous Deacy Amp, an electric guitar amplifier created in 1972 by John Deacon. He used an amplifier circuit board from a Supersonic PR80 portable radio found in a skip, fitted into a speaker cabinet and powered by a 9-volt battery.
He was an electrical engineer after all
... And nobody played synthesizer... again.
Interesting. Thank you:)
He has a degree in electrical engineering
te pregunté capo, gracias?
The end of this song is the very beggining of the "Nevermore" song!
I noticed that too because I'd be listening to this song and all of a sudden I'd hear Freddie singing the lyrics to "Nevermore".
That's how they did it back in their day
The beggining of this song is the very end of the "Ogre Battle" song!
I have the album on record and all the tracks transition onto the next one. Great album
Pope-Eye you also find it with tenement funster, flick of the wrist to lily of the valley on sheer heart attack as well.
Where on earth did they get the genius to write this masterpiece? This is bloody brilliant 😍😍😍😍😍
From Richard Dadd, the Killer Painter
Zafiro B. Aye I know that but I meant the whole musical concept rather than the topic
Oh.... don't know eather xD sorry
Zanzibar my dear. ; )
Phil Barrett what does Zanzibar have to do with this song?
This is probably Queen's weirdest but coolest songXD
You probably didn't hear "Don't Try Suicide" That one is real craziness.
Kuba Tyniec I don't think is really normal that I want to dance to a song that talks about suicide.
Kuba Tyniec That's because is based on a chaotic and claustrophobic painting, Queen transferred that feeling from a painting to a song perfectly.
absolutely..it was inspired by a painting in the leuvre
Well that works. It's not a dance tune.
The piano at the end is the start of "Nevermore". It maybe the next track on the album
It is the song before this is ogre battle which nicely transitions
John's bass guitar work is sending me somewhere Ive never been before. Hard to imagine he was in his early 20s creating complex sounds like these. It blends so well with everything. Im quite in awe.
This song is amazing and the transition into "Nevermore" is perfect. My kids are all under the age of 11 and they love this song too, asking me to play it over and over and humming it around the house.
yeah I've been humming it for 49 years, lol
John Deacon at 2:15-2:20 aaagh is just too much!! Amazing.
What that John with the falsetto?
DinosaurFilms - Maps you can listen through the whole song how amazing John is!
I've heard him do some great falsettos live, but I didn't think that he had done any in the final records.
its freddie
Freddie has that voice
Deacon, the most underrated bassist in the history of rock.
Freddie had the “This song’s gonna have more complicated words than the last one” competition with himself
I've been addicted to this song for 42years! It's just unbelievablly brilliant!

80's Queen songs are good but I like 70's Queen songs better because it feels so much better to me 💃
These guys were unreal. This is only their second album but the talent and creativity is already off the charts.
His songwriting ability was unreal
Absolutely bananas. How would anyone come up with this? And one of my favorite queen songs. As weird as the actual painting.
Deacon's bass is outstanding
Shall we all agree that Freddie's 70'd vocals, Bryan's medieval-like guitar from the 70's, Roger's infinite drums from the 70's and John's unbelievable bass from the 70's are the best?
Who's Bryan?
Absolutely stunning

guaranteed to blow your mind! What a genius Freddie!
Some definitions:
"Tatterdemalion": a person in tattered clothing.
"Junketer": someone taking part in a junket or banquet etc; a partygoer.
"Pedagogue": a teacher, especially a strict or pedantic one.
"Quaere": query (i.e. find out more about this fellow?)
"Ostler": a man employed to look after the horses of people staying at an inn.
Thanks
From what I've gathered, quaere = old spelling of queer
Only a guy like Freddie could write such an amazing song about a painting that shares the same name.
most underrated queen song
+Adrian Mars i agree with you
Definitely a QUEEEN masterpiece 💛
I learned a shit ton of words just by listening to queen’s early 70’s songs 😳
I love Freddie's 70s fairy world :)
this song + headphone = Heaven
bloody genius !!
Freddie said he wasn't inspired very often by a work of art, in terms of creating a song around one, but on this occasion he said he was. He would go to the gallery and study it carefully. In my mind's eye, l can see him there leaning in to the painting taking in every little detail. That was his nature. He was masterful when taking up his own works of art and truly a perfectionist which is why Queen succeeded. So grateful the musical genius that you were and are. Well done, Freddie darling, well done.
I love the "weird" diversity that Queen incorporated. So. Damn. Talented.
I cant even understand this mans vocal range, he makes himself sound like a full-fledged girl at 00:52. and it sounds so heavenly.
That part is pitch correction
Freddie did the falsettos and in post production they added pitch correction in some parts

Ahhh, John's bass guitar!
This blew me away when I heard it all those years ago. No wonder I couldn't I couldn't figure out the words.
He's a fairy feller
The fairy folk have gathered round the new moon shine
To see the feller crack a nut at nights noon time
To swing his axe he swears, as it climbs he dares
To deliver...
The master-stroke
Ploughman, "waggoner will", and types
Politician with senatorial pope - he's a dilly-dally-o
Pedagogue squinting, wears a frown
And a satyr peers under lady's gown, dirty fellow
What a dirty laddio
Tatterdemalion and a junketer
There's a thief and a dragonfly trumpeter - he's my hero
Fairy dandy tickling the fancy of his lady friend
The nymph in yellow
What a quaere fellow
Soldier, sailor, tinker, tailor, ploughboy
Waiting to hear the sound
And the arch-magician presides
He is the leader
Oberon and titania watched by a harridan
Mab is the queen and there's a good apothecary-man
Come to say hello
Fairy dandy tickling the fancy of his lady friend
The nymph in yellow
What a quaere fellow
The ostler stares with hands on his knees
Come on mr. feller, crack it open if you please
I liked this song, then when I found out it's describing a painting I looked at the painting(and tried to find all the stuff he was describing)and now for some reason I find this song so much more interesting

One of John Deacon's greatest moments
When he sang "a Dragonfly Trumpeter- he's my hero" I felt that.

Top 10 Queen Song
This is my long time favorite Queen song written by Freddie, just out of this world. The album Queen2 is always one of my favorite Queen albums, I just don't know how I could describe this feeling, Freddie is a musical genius and real artist. When I heard this song in 1977, I was 12, at that time I didn't know about that painting or I even didn't understand the lyrics because I'm a Japanese native, but I was totally blown away with everything I heard. I'm now 56 and still addicted to this song. アリガトウ!
I always thought this song was a masterpiece. Now I have listened over hundreds of times and I feel this may be the most special Queen song to be composed by Freddie Mercury. Everything in this short song is unwordly, coming straight from Mercury.
Yeah!
I just found out it was inspired by a Victorian painting that freddy ( a graphic artist ) really liked ...
I do love this song so much too. Inspired by Richard Dadd's painting. The artist defied convention and painted fairies instead of the popular religious themes. My mum and aunt (big Queen fans) took me to see the painting when I was 15. I've read his poem/explanation for the painting several times. Many spots are hard to understand but I do appreciate the genius of the man as I do the genius of Mr Freddie Mercury.

this song is pure magic and shows what great musicians they are! you don't find something like that anymore today. One of the greatest songs EVER (in my opinion)! I think I am a musician. Thank you Queen for writing this song for us!
That "nevermore" piano ending...perfect
my favorite song of all and not just by Queen.
+kurtmorr me too
Yeah. It's a really good one.
If the fairy Feller is performing the master stroke, it's going to be raining diamonds. 💎
Fun fact: Many people speculated that Fairy Fellers Master-Stoke was never performed live at all. It wasn’t until the Rainbow Concerts were released, as Queen performed FDM-S live during the march concert as the Rainbow.
They also performed it in blackpool, sunderland and birmingham that same tour
The Rainbow live version is heavily pitch-corrected though, the entire show is, there is no other source other than the pitch corrected one so we don't have a single idea as to how the song really really sounded like when they played it.
i love how the songs conect to each other, this is THE band
other bands did songs which connected to other songs too.
