You need writers because entire seasons of this would get dull very fast. But I think the writers' strike was a high water moment for the Conan Show. Most of my fond memories were from that phase. Conan was the perfect candidate for "let's just screw around..."
I think one of the best things about Conan is that during every writers strike, he kept paying the writers, was able to keep the show going , and let them all come back after the strike. Absolute legend!
He’s a smart man for doing that. There’s a lot of things that go into making something like this, but losing a chunk of your writers, not even just all of them, that can lead to a loss of your shows identity and the certain mood and tone brought to it. A host can only carry and do so much for it as the face and entertainer.
I've wanted to see this again since it aired. Wow a friend and I remembered it wrong. I thought Abe was in a little square area playing solitaire at a table and my friend remembered Halloween plastic skeletons.
Wasnt there another bit where conan was somewhere, and runs into abe again, and conan seems genuinely surprised to see Abe. He says something like "what are you still doing here?" And abe goes I NEVAH LEFT. Conan absolutely loses it. Am i making this up? I swear this was a bit.
They should have put Chris Elliot in a long Rip Van Winkle beard down there. He did several running gags as “The Man Under the Bleachers” during the Letterman version of the Late Show.
Funny how things change. Shows tried to go on without writers during this strike. In the latest strike, most shows were in solidarity with their writers and simply shut down.
It proves Conan, who himself is a writer who penned the classic episode of The Simpsons entitled "Marge vs The Monorail", is fucking awesome. And even he knew this wasn't sustainable without his team. But as a former WGA member with a bit of chaos he could still entertain. Holy shit Abe Vigoda
The fact that this was the last thing he wanted to do, proves that no, they've ran out of silly things to do. They are a limited supply. That's the point.
Bro I'm dead, when he started walking away from Abe you can hear some lady in the background yell "Eat it!"
Your right! Lol 5:35

Walking past the chair
Audience: "eat it"
Never seen this one before but as soon as he opened the hatch I was like "Abe Vigoda is in there"
The Abe Vigoda gag never gets old.
Best use of Abe in the show yet.
Yet??? lol
@@LivvieLynn Abe is actually alive, in fact he's living in my basement right now.

EAT IT!!!
Peak Comedy, we'll never see Fallon pull something like this off.
Can't everybody PLEASE just stop saying peak?
Just call something the best and let us be healthy again.
@@YodatheHobbit peak is a normal term that has been used for decades, get over yourself
Lol facts! I feel like Fallon is just a big F-U to late night comedy. 😂😢
Fallon is always high uninteresting and his jokes suck. Sketches are decent tho
What’s your beef with Fallon? lol
Was hoping Andy would be living down there. Or maybe Conan's secret bedroom?
Letterman did a bit similar on his Late Night which was in the same studio
The way people genuinely wanted to shake his hand was awesome.
I miss the old Abe sketches. I think he passed away right after Conan moved the whole core team to LA.
No he passed away in 2019 I think
So sad though. @@joeymartinez9854
@@joeymartinez9854He passed away on 26 January 2016. His last appearance on the show was on the last episode of Late Night in 2009.
@@kutter_ttl6786 ohhhhhhhh I was three years off and really
So that’s where Abe Vigoda went after _Good Burger_
Binge watching strike content ty for these and solidarity ✊️
How did I not see Abe Vigoda coming?🤣

Conan is one of the best of all time
I half thought they were gonna find Chris Elliot, but Abe Vigoda works too...
I think the trap door under the stairs Conan came out of was the "Man Under the stairs" door : )
They should have put Chris Elliot in a long Rip Van Winkle beard down there. He did several running gags as “The Man Under the Bleachers” during the Letterman version of the Late Show.
The Abe part is so wholesome
Abe Vigoda.
Love it.

Woohoo!
Conan without writers is Eric Andre.
Jim Cramer in early 2008 is the real scare of this clip.
I remember this writers strike, and I also remember thinking that the show was way funnier during it.
3:47 COMEWITHMEE
Nah abe scared the hell outta me
Wish there was a skeleton of one of Letterman’s mole men who lived there or Chris Elliot
Abe 😂
Band should've played In the Hall of the Mountain King.
2:59 gaaaay
Loads of farts and leg ends under those seats.
I can’t help but feel that this whole thing has been “staged”.
Dave Letterman did it in the 80s
Doesn't this prove the writer's strike is ineffective?
As a writer himself Conan proves he doesn't need someone else's help to be funny. This bit was awesome.
