- I have a lot of questions about the oils I use and straight up "what is my recipe". Today I want to share with your which oils I use and why as well as have that dreaded discussion about palm oil.
I am now at a point where I am confident in my recipe and I am happy to at last share with you, what goes into my oil. You will find the recipe down below and will be included in all future descriptions.

THANK YOU for explaining the area of Palm! Knowledge is power!!!
Knowledge is definitely power. Sometimes it's about looking at the grey areas too to understand better ❤
Great video, I totally agree with your statements and research on Palm, very nicely done, thanks for all you do for the soaping community
Thank you Patrick. ❤ There are so many wonderful people in the bath and body/soap making community - yourself included and I love that I can give back some of what was shared with me when I first started my journey.
I can't thank you enough for being so knowledgeable and for sharing all of this information!
Thank you for watching and supporting me ❤
Thank you for your thorough explanation and tutorial... you are a great teacher!

Thank you for watching and happy I can help ❤
Thank you for sharing the information, you and katie are my favourite soap makers.
Thank you - that means a lot ❤
Thank you! Great information and tips! Blessings
Thank you for watching
Thank you so much for this great and informative video. My recipe is similar to yours but I add lard in the mix. Being in a midwest farming community, it is a resource that is readily available to me and I like what it brings to the soap. I really love your videos and all of the extra tidbits of facts that you through in.
Thank you ❤ I've tried lard and liked how the bar felt but always thought I could smell it in the soap. I should try again 😊
Thanks for the video it was a great help in understanding the the difference in the oil ☘️
Thank you for watching 🧡 happy it helped
Thank you very much for sharing Keeley! Totally agree with all the information on palm oil, very interesting.
Thank you ❤
I really like your thoughts about palm oil. I am fairly new to soapmaking, and I don't use palm oil. But why I don't use it might surprise you. It is simply because it is not available in the country I live. I can get it from immigrant shops as vegetable ghee (uncertified palm), and I can order it online for astronomical prices. When I saw all the discussions about palm oil and soapmaking, and heard all the different views, I decided to look further into it. So I went to the website of the most extreme environmental organization, the Greenpeace (the Norwegian website). I wanted to find out the worst and the best with palm oil, I assumed Greenpeace would be a great place to start when searching for the worst and I also assumed Greenpeace would say, in page after page, NOT to use it and why. But to my surprise, they didn't. They said sustainable palm oil was not that sustainable at all. So they had meetings with a Norwegian or Scandinavian importer of palm oil and did this and that I can't remember, all to improve on the situation with unsustainable certified sustainable palm oil. The bottom line was that Greenpeace did not say stop using palm oil. They said use certified sustainable palm oil, and that it finally was more sustainable now than before. They also said palm oil was important to the world because of the high oil outcome compared to other plants grown for its oil. They also mentioned the problems of a stop in the use of palm oil - more agricultural land must then be used to produce other oils. So I think that palm oil, if sustainable grown, is not any worse than other oils. But since I can't find it, I don't use it. In Norway, palm oil are more or less totally gone from products available at grocery stores. Years ago, customers demanded palm-free products. So everything with palm oil were replaced with other oils. In Sweden, they for example have sustainable palm oil in margarine. We have hydrogenated coconut and rapeseed instead. But we do have non-sustainable and polluting palm oil in our gasoline in form of bio-fuel. I think 20% or something around there. It was recently a scandal when someone found out what was in our gasoline, for environmental reasons, and that it was worse than gasoline made from the regular oil they usually produce gasoline from.
For soaps, I would use palm if I could get it at a reasonable price. Now I use a vegetable lard we have in grocery stores that is made of shea, coconut and rapeseed, and mix that with a little more coconut plus add olive and castor. It works really well. The vegetable lard is not cheap, but it will be more expensive for me to buy palm oil.
I believe a lot of anti-palm people are going off old information and research when there was a lot of dodgy dealings. But we are more clued up now and they have to produce it better. It is also grow in more countries too than it once was. I did chuckle when I found out it was in biofuel.
Thank you Keeley, I learn a lot from your video's. Very generous to share your recipe, I have been using a tallow version of Katie's, but will give this one a go.
Thank you for watching 🧡
Thank you so much. I'm a new soap maker and I've learnt a lot in the last six months and have so much more to learn! Your video has given me some great additional knowledge and tips, especially around temperatures and dealing with the Brissie heat!
Thank you for watching 🧡 our humidity plays a big part in soap making.
People can't be so nit picky. Where would we draw the line. These same people drive cars that pollutes the environment. They live in houses that were built by tearing down an animals home. It would be nice to not harm a single animal but that's life. Unless you live in the forest and walk everywhere than you're affecting everything around you. Awesome video!
Thank you ❤ This is how I see things too. We sometimes focus on one small element and don't see the entire picture of what our actions are doing.
i have used responsibly sourced palm and the only complaint I got was from my daughter, who is very earth conscious. When I told her it was responsibly sourced, she remained very skeptical . I also did a great deal of research and will offer soap with and without, so those who don’t like it don’t have to buy it.
It's always good to have options but I've not had any customers complain or refuse to buy especially when I explain it's the only oil I use that comes certified as sustainably grown. ❤
I use it! I enjoy the benefits and it makes a nice soap.
I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us. If we see each of us as individuals, we won't be so judgmental. Keep inspiring!
Thank you ❤ I believe we are often too quick to judge without having full information on why decision are made.
Great informative video. You are such a great teacher and explain everything so nice and easy to follow and understand.
I started making soap about 1.5 months ago... it is such a joy.
You are so talented and such an inspiration!
I try to watch all your videos, the most recent ones as well ( congratulations for your lovely shop, I imagine it is a dream coming true. )
Wish you all the best and great success in the future! Greetings from Greece!
Thank you 🧡 hope you enjoy your soaping journey.
I am one of those who try and steer away from Palm... I kept saying, "I won't use it in my soap!" Then I started actually looking at food labels. Palm oil is in nearly everything!! I still haven't used it in my soaps because I really want to research the source I get it from. As soon as I find a good reliable source I do plan on experimenting with it. But like myself, for all those who want to snub their nose at Palm (guilty!) They should really look at the products they consume.
There is a new company called Palm Done Right in some countries and this meant to be very friendly palm oil.
It is true that Palm is in so many products we consume and is often the frying oil used in takeaway restaurants. There are also many other cosmetic ingredients that are derived from palm which people are not aware of.
I feel the palm oil issue has been over reaching. Apparently there is a huge farm/plantation in Victoria. Not a single Orangutan would be harmed by farming palm oil in Australia. However if it is sourced from Indonesia that would be another issue. Clearing of Orangutan habits. So the statement that should be on bars of soap is that it is sourced responsibly.Yes exactally about the olive plantations etc.
I do have a note on my labels that the palm is sustainably sourced 😊 I know we grow Palm Oil here in Australia but so far have been unable to source a supplier that sells the Australian grown one. It's used in so much including biofuel that the Australian grown may only be for large commercial use. Mine doesn't come from Indonesia ❤
WIL C who are these people? Do you mean Indonesians?
Thank you for your views on Palm Oil. I love it and use it also in my soaps. 😍
Thank you 😊 it really does as some great qualities. I hear there are new producers out there really focusing on the sustainability of the oil
Thank you for your research and sharing......
Thank you for watching 🧡
So generous of you to share your recipe. As soap makers we can be scared into keeping everything a secret for fear someone would steal our ideas and claim them as their own. I love teaching others how to make soap and share my recipe and all my ingredients and suppliers as well.
Thank you ❤ When I first started I found so many free resources to get me on my way that I felt this is a great way to give back. Despite all the oils out there and the possible combinations, I am sure some are already using this exact combination. It's all about what you do with the base recipe ❤
So informative. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Thank you for watching ❤
Thank you for the information on palm oil and the comparison to other oils that we don't consider as much. I'm a big fan of using palm and I worry about what my customers will think but you explained it do very well that I feel comfortable using it. Sometimes people just get to hung up on issues and don't really do any research. Your videos are so informative and I really appreciate you putting them out there for us. And of course, you make incredible soap so thank you for that. 💕
Thank you for your lovely comments ❤ I always get frustrated at how people hone in on one thing and fail to see a bigger picture and what the alternatives mean.
I made your recipe Keeley some many weeks ago now, and it is very nice now I am able to use it. I love the feel. The olive oil tip with the large container was brilliant. I'm always sloshing my olive oil everywhere, can't wait to pop a hole in my can! Thanks for the inspiration, recipe, and tips - they are always wonderful.
Thank you 🧡 so pleased you like itand thank you for supporting me
Love your channel! Will definitely give this recipe a go. Thank you for sharing it 🙂
Thank you ❤ hope you like the recipe
love your message very important great video
Thank you 😊
Great video discussion about oils. Definite thumbs up. 👍 I use RS palm oil and never had concerns from customers. I also use silk and have had some people looking for vegan soaps, so I make a few without silk. I like your tip about the olive oil can. I’ve experienced that glug glug splashing so will remember it. 😃
Thank you ❤ Bamboo silk is meant to offer the same effects as Tussah but is harder to break down. I don't get too many requests for vegan but do omit it from the soaps I always keep in stock like my lavender. 😊
I use Royalty Soaps recipe as well and I want to try Shea butter so I'm going to try your recipe! Can't wait!! Thank you for sharing. 😊
I loved Katie's recipe - so easy to use. The Shea does make it behave a little differently but as I wanted the recipe to reflect my business, its something I have learned to work with. Let me know what you think when you try it.
As you can see by my icon, I am an animal lover! I use palm in my recipes too! I came to about the same conclusion you did, as I come from a long line of farm family. I also realized long ago working for the American Humane Society, that 96% of the money donated to them is used for business expenses, very little goes to the animals! Your wondering what that has to do with soap? Well, the same people that tell you not to use palm oil, use the money given to them for the animals for administrative costs and those 10 minute commercials that pull out your heart! Unfortunately the humane race isn't perfect. We can do our part and be responsible custodians of our environment, and remember to be kind to everything and everybody!!! Love your videos!
I completely get your reference. There has recently been a campaign here in Australia about live exports but it's just been revealed that the activists paid workers to mistreat a select few animals and take photos so I'm very sceptical of what groups say. Like you say, we can be responsible for our environment. We are working hard to replant our property with native Bush for the animals around us and I have made it a goal to get rid of all disposables used in production and our packaging. 😊
Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you for watching ❤
I am so happy that you mentioned the harvesting of other oils. Now I going to sit back and see how many of these soapers are going to shut down their business or hoo on their soap box about other oils.
Thank you ❤
Thank you, Keeley! It was great watching this video. I have been told several times that I shouldn't use palm oil, also. Thank you for taro ng ther time to do all the research you have. I still use the Royalty Soaps recipe, because it just works! When I'm more confident I'll be tweaking in future. I'm loving your videos because I'm learning so much. 💖
Happy I can help. Always do what you feel comfortable doing 😊
Thank you so much for sharing
You're welcome ❤ thank you for watching
Thank you, this was very informative and useful. Great video

I Love Palm Oil in soaps!
It feels lovely in soap!
Kelly, thank you so much for the common sense analysis of the use of palm oil in soap. I have used palm for the last 15 years, and recently switched to RSPO-certified homogenized palm oil (pre-stirred) that I get from Soaper’s Choice and WSP here in the States. I have never had a customer ask about the use of Palm in my soaps, but for those who are aware, I list “Sustainable Palm Oil” on the ingredients list on my soaps, so that I can explain to anyone who has questions. I enjoyed this video/tutorial and I applaud you for sharing your recipe. Jan at Pewter Dragonfly.
Thank you ❤ I list that it's sustainable too for those that ask. It is so great as soap makers we get the choice to purchase the RSPO approved oil.
I'm a newbie and so far I've only used combo's of olive, coconut and almond oil. I'm going to try this recipe this weekend, excited! Also, I just found your channel and love it, thanks.
Thank you for watching ❤ hope you enjoy the recipe. Let me know how you go
Thank you so much for this, for explaining your point of view and sharing your recipe! I too have seen the pressure with online Facebook soaping groups to stay away from palm, that you’re responsible for animals losing habitat if you use it and so forth. I was feeling pretty glum since I had recently purchased a large box of no stir palm and I don’t want to waste it. So far I haven’t had any customers complain. I agree that it makes a great bar of soap!
I have learned over the years it is better to listen to your customers than FB groups ❤ As long as you are confident in your product and your choses, I have found it is easier to discuss these things with customers. For those that really don't want it, I have a fellow maker at my local markets who makes lovely soaps so I always recommend her. Most customers are thankful for the knowledge and recommendation.
Thank you Keely, on your information on using Palm oil, I was always adamant I wasn't going to use it because it was my way of helping our environment, but when you talked about all the other oils having to be farmed too, you have convinced me to trying it to see what the bar is like. As you say, if you have bars that are without, then the customer can choose, if they do or dont want it. It's all about choices.
Thank you for watching! I always have the options but to date my customers are happy with the palm recipe. When I sit and look about the home, so much has palm included and I have no idea how that was sourced. I also discovered biofuel may also have palm oil in it which is unfair to those that wish to avoid it as they do not need to disclose the make up of biofuel.
I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing. I myself have decided to give palm oil a try.
Thank you for watching and supporting me ❤ I hope you like the qualities it will bring to your soap
Great video! Thank you 😊
Thank you for watching ❤
Truly a great video. Thank you for your recipe. I used Katie's as well however I really like the addition of Shea butter. I recently made a shea butter pumace foot scrub soap and I love the way it felt. I was truly proud of myself as it was my first from scratch recipe and it turned out great and a friend bought the entire (minus my bar) lot of soap. Working with pumace powder is a huge mess so I will not be making it again anytime soon . Ha
Thank you ❤ it really is such a great feeling to formulate recipes and see them work. Your soap sounds amazing but I understand about mess 😆
Wonderful video, I tried Royalty soaps recipe as my very first recipe. I love that you have shared, your recipe always looks so beautiful, I thought due to the name of your company name there would be more Shea, This is not a complaint whatsoever. I love palm oil, even when weighing out ingredients it feels beautiful on the hands. Thank you for tips and tricks
Thank you ❤ my palm free recipe uses a lot more Shea butter but as mentioned it traces soap quickly so the designs are very simple. The palm free bars are also smaller due to the cost of Shea butter.
I was sold on palm when I got my first delivery and saw how creamy it was in the bucket - loved it even more in soap
I know this is an old thread but thank you for taking the time to go into detail about the safe usage of Palm Oil. I've used it for almost 20 years now and won't soap without it due to the fatty acid profile and what it contributes to a bar of soap. Education is key to the naysayers. I don't even think we, as soapmakers, can purchase palm oil from any of our suppliers that's NOT RSPO. They all, only offer sustainable palm oil.
Thank you 🧡 The profile of this oil is amazing and can't compare to others. I read an interesting article on WWF this week about it. Of all the vegetable oils used, Palm makes up 35%. However it only makes up 10% of land used by growers. They state that by boycotting it, we will just move the "problem" to another oil that actually needs more land and therefore becomes a bigger issue. It's about better management.
I have recently started using RSPO palm and tweaked my original recipe to incorporate it and now love it even more as it stays more fluid to allow more working time. Also the tip with your olive oil can... being of Italian heritage we always did that but an even better tip is to puncture a hole in the can with a can opener in the complete opposite corner to the pouring spout so oil doesn't come out of the hole you made.
I too found the palm recipe gave more working time. Thank you for that awesome tip - I will do that on my next can I open.❤
I too will use RSPO Certified Palm Oil. It makes a lovely bar of soap. Well sourced products always - it's all you can do. Don't worry about what the ninnyyammers on groups say, many of them have nothing better to do than to knock others down. Bravo for you for sharing and teaching. I love your videos and look forward to each and every one. Edited to add I use lard more than palm - and honey and beeswax as I am a beekeeper.
Thank you ❤ I've tried lard but I find I can still smell it after the cure - probably my imagination 😆 I love the feel of honey and beeswax in the soap too.
I actually took myself out of all groups about a year ago as I found them very unhealthy. I have found I do a lot more in depth research now ❤
Palm oil sustainably and responsibly sourced is perfectly okay if you want to use it in your formula. I use it in mine with those two things in mind. Love your videos!
Thank you ❤ I'm finding that most people are not bothered as I can show its sustainably sourced
Hi Keeley wow you really went to great lengths to explain the why’s and what for. I am always wondering why people give out there recipes. If you go to a company and ask them for there recipes they would surely laugh at you well walking you to the door. So I thank you for sharing. I would also like to tell you I love your products that I have tried.
Thank you Terrie ❤ so pleased you loved your goodies. I like to share my recipes as so many others have been generous to me and I believe in giving back. There are some recipes I keep to myself - mainly those that have taken a long time to perfect like my palm free recipe. ❤
Your thoughts on palm oil make sense.
Thank you 🧡
Your recipe is similar to mine. The only difference is that recently started using Cocoa Butter. I love how my soap feels with Palm Oil. Your explanation was well detailed. ♥️
Cocoa Butter is so lovely in soap! 🧡
I love that
Thank you 🧡
I totally agree with you on the palm oil and the other oils. I buy the RSPO Certified Sustainable food grade Palm Oil from a place here in the the states. It's not expensive and I too like in my bars of soap that I make. Keep up the great work and great videos. I really look forward to seeing them.
Thank you ❤ it's great to know we can get RSPO certified palm oil. It really does add some beautiful qualities to our soaps 😊
May I ask where you purchase it here in the States? Thanks!
@@GodzHarleyGirlStudio I hope I'm allowed to say this here. I order from Essential Depot. That's where I get my lye too. I'm pretty much a newby (soaping for 2 years).
@@denisestich3846 Appreciate it very much Denise! Thanks!
@@denisestich3846 of course you're allowed 😊 I can help with Australian suppliers only so happy for everyone to help each other
Thanks for sharing your story. I have found that I need to measure out ingredients in separate containers. As a retired chef, I know the importance of accurate measurements. Even as steady as I am, I can still over poor something. I too use my liquid oils to cool my hot oils. But while I measure each thing, including the lye water, each type is scaled in its own container. This gives me the chance to correct myself if I over shoot the amount. It makes for more containers to clean but I just throw the oily ones in the dish machine. All lye containers are washed by hand. Btw, I too feel the palm oil controversy is way over blown. Thank you fot your detailed information.
I started by weighing separately but found I couldn't get all the oils out the pots so my weights were still off 🙁. If I over pour by a lot, I put my new weights in soapcalc and redo my lye amount. 😊
Very informative
Thank you for watching ❤
Yasssss, girl preach!!!
Oh dear - I hope I didn't sound like I was preaching. Just wanted to share a different perspective 😊
You don’t sound preachy at all. It’s basically American slang for strongly agreeing with something/someone.
@@sam-spooniesoaps-8382 😊 I just learned something new
I have also tried Kathy's recipe and it is wonderful! I have also run into people who really want vegan products, I make cuticle butter and lip butter with beeswax, but when I make vegan products, they don't sell, so I am no longer going to waste my money buying ingredients I am not going to use. I think I am going to add palm oil back into my soap as well. Love your videos!
It is a great recipe she has shared. ❤
The hardest lesson I have learned running my business is that I can't please everyone and I can't make everything. As I am not vegan, I don't purposely create with that in mind but do know which products are suitable. Instead, I get to know my fellow creators and recommend people to businesses that do specialise in those products. ❤
Nicely done! I haven't used palm oil in my soaps yet, but I have future plans to do so and see how it turns out.
Thank you ❤ Let us know what you think when you get to have a test of it.
@@SoyandShea I will 😊 I am really curious as to how it will affect the soap. I will try to upload a video when I do so 😊
Enjoyed your video! Thank you for sharing! I’m going to give it a try since my last attempt was unsuccessful 😢
Thank you ❤ sorry to hear the last one didn't go as planned but glad to hear you won't let it beat you. Let us know how you go 😊
Thank you!! @@SoyandShea
This was super helpful! Thanks, Keeley! Hugz, Tree
Thank you ❤
@@GodzHarleyGirlStudio will do 😊
Thank you Kelly I'm thanking you because You said it in a nicer kinder sweet gentler way me I probably would not as nice but that not to say that I am not nice I am but I did not follow along with all the noise about palm oil simply because it was sad I do my own research and the point that was made didn't make sense to me because like you said if you really do to work and find out how all things are made then we would not be buying anything So I say to those make whatever it is that you want to make use whatever you want to use have the knowledge and the test to back it Be happy and comfortable with who you are I am a palm user !! Too many people follow along things without knowing where they're headed but watch out you may just head off of a cliff lol
Thank you 🧡 it's so true we wouldn't even buy water if we knew what happened there.
Hopefully you succeed in business good luck
Thank you
I used Katie’s recipe too after a year of learning about oils and what I was looking for. I did my own recipe for a long time but got bricks. I just use the olive, castor and palm. For my shampoo and shaving bars I add Shea butter. I try to stay away from coconut Bc I’m allergic. I haven’t had a problem with people not liking the palm oil.
That must be hard avoiding coconut oil 😔 I've only had two people comment on the Palm oil. One was a soap maker and the other a father whose child was chowing down on a nutella donut 🙄 he had no clue Nutella is made with Palm oil
Omg that’s hilarious!!! 🤦♀️
WOW! WOW! WOW! Hi Keeley, I just found your channel and subscribed. You are incredible, I love the way you explain the whys and hows, it's so much clearer now. You see, I starting soaping few months ago because of my son's eczema and I absolutely love it. You made it easier to understand so many unknowns. I was also skeptical about the use of palm oil, I used it in some soaps and I loved it but now I won't feel guilty to use it. I also want to ask you, what brand and model is your scale?, and, I have seen some of your videos where you use a beautiful bowl to soap, where did you get it? Thank you for sharing your talent and your knowledge with us.
Thank you for watching and supporting me ❤ Never guilty about your choices, just know why you make the choice ❤ the scales don't have a brand on them. I usually pick the up in Ebay but Amazon have them too. Look for electronic digital scales. The red bowls I picked up in a clearance outlet
Really interesting video as usual. Thank you. I'm interested in 1) what you were using before the palm oil and 2) how the 30% coconut oil goes for your skin. I find I can only tolerate 15% but maybe it is the different combination of oils that makes the difference
Thank you for watching ❤ before palm oil, I was using 6 different oils. I was using Rice Bran for the Palmitic qualities. I have found the high level of olive oil and the palm oil balance the cleansing effect of coconut oil. I also like the moisturising effect of the Shea but depending on sensitivities, some people may still not like it. Some even say pure olive oil soap is too drying.
Great tips for new soapers. I have been using an ice pick on the cans. Learned that one a long time ago on paint thinner cans. I also use sustainable Palm Oil and formulated my recipes according to the properties I was looking for in my bars of soap, through soapcalc.net. I had to weigh the pros & cons, as in all my oils and decided to keep using it. Never had a negative comment. Since I have always had difficulty with facebook, didn't use that in my research. Keep up the creative juices and so glad you share on youtube. 😊
Thank you. I might see if I can find an ice pick and return hubby's screwdriver 😆
I've not had any negative comments from customers since using my recipe. ❤
Love watching 😊
Your soupas always turn out awesome, even when you have an ill mannered frangrance, lol. Thanks for this video!!!

I've been messing about with lard and tallow in my soaps, but I think I'll try to get my hands on some sustainable palm oil next 😄 Thanks for sharing your recipe!
I had a go using lard and tallow but I felt I could still smell it, even over the fragrance once cured. I did like the feel of the soap with animals fast- very similar to palm
Palm oil isn't bad at all. I'm in Ghana, we eat palm kernel oil and palm oil both. I've watched a lot of soap videos on CZcams and I realised people outside of Africa call it palm oil but we call it palm kernel. Then there's palm oils the red one are both edible and we use it in soaps as well.
Besides here in Ghana, we grow palm in our farms and homes as well. I hv 3 palm trees in my house.
It is perfectly great and healthy.
We do get palm kernel oil too but easier to access the palm oil. I'd love to get some red palm oil one day - it looks to make amazing soap.
@@SoyandShea it's great.
Shea butter is one of my favorites as well. I'm surprised you don't use soy in your soap. I often use soy blends since it is readily available. Do you make Soy candles? I like Katie's recipe too--it was fun to get it with the piping set. For years I've used so many different oils. I've naturally moved back to my favorites but I have a big bucket of palm I just might have to revisit. Very good food for thought or soapy oils for thought rather, LOL. :)Jen
Yes I make candles as well. I got my business name for the two ingredients I use the most. I've not yet added soy into soaps as I know it can be tricky. I've used lots of oils over the years but now keep to my favourites to stop wastage ❤
I use palm oil as well. Here in the states most palm oil sold is sustainable and I agree, it really does add a lot to a bar of soap.
I think most places sell the sustainable palm oil these days. I love how creamy the bars feel 😊
Did you know Nutella is made with palm oil? Interesting fact. Love you videos Keely. It's hot in Melbourne too. 36c expected tomorrow 😎xx Katherine
Thank you ❤ I think people would be surprised at what Palm oil is in and how many of our favourite restaurants use it for cooking. I heard this morning that down south was expecting another heat wave - we are only sitting at about 24c today which is lovely
@@SoyandShea Palm oil is every where "vegetable shortening" in so many things. Just ease up I say and enjoy the qualities of the bar it produces.. i use it in all my recipies. 37 c today, very HOT indeed!
You *CAN* get sustainable palm oil that doesn't come from conflict sources (deforestation, slave and child labour, illegal land grabs from indigenous groups, killing of endangered species), and those plantations are generally in Malaysia and Thailand, and are certified by RSPO. Green Palm isn't RSPO. The oil palm is native to West Africa anyway, so there's heaps of plantations there and you could probably source some, or from Brazil, where it has proven to be beneficial to the environment after so much logging.
You are right about other oil production. Soy bean oil is a very common oil that causes problems to the environment and native animals in South America. Also, you are not a giant corporation using million of tonnes of the stuff. A lot of major brands either switched to sustainable palm oil or eliminated it. The only two that are still going for the unsustainable stuff are Mondelez (Kraft, Cadbury, PepsiCo) and Unilever. Nestle Australia switched to sustainable palm in 2015, I think?
Thank you ❤ the palm oil I have is sustainable with all the certificates 😊 that's very interesting about the big corporations who have and haven't switch.
Thank you for your thoughts about palm oil. I think the olive oil example wasn't well chosen since olive trees will definitely not live in rainforest climate and soil but I understand that farming olive trees also means destroying the habitat of certain animals. Since olive trees need so little water they seem more sustainable to me.
You use water what is way more sustainable than milk or aloe Vera so I hope you customers appreciate that.
I also liked the bit about you being impatient and than just waiting until the next day. That is a good solution. 30 degrees indoors? Wow, that is HOT. Definitely is summer there.
Yes summer can be brutal here with indoor temperatures being very uncomfortable.
The main concern I have picked up about Palm oil is the destruction of rainforest and orangutan homes, not so much water as these areas usually get high rain fall. The same rings true for other plant crops, especially as demand grows. We have a winery down the road which I've seen grow from a tiny shed to this monstrous thing that does huge concerts. The land they have cleared for our enjoyment and vineyards is astonishing and we have seen a huge decline in Koalas and Kangaroos round here but its not something people think about. We are working hard to replant our bit of land with native plants 😊
@@SoyandShea that sounds heartbreaking... The problems are way larger than palm oil. You are so right.
I didn't mean to compare palm oil in rainforest areas to olive trees in dry climates. I just meant in general that farming olive trees seem to put less pressure on the planet (less water, poorer soil etc) but this is just my guess.
@@____Ann____ I guess we will never really know unless we work in or know someone that works in these areas. We can only hope we are being told the truth.
I learn so much from listening to you. Now I understand why my soaps trace so fast and gets too thick too fast. I have a plan A for design but always end up on plan B because of rapidly thickening soap. I think I use a lot of shea, but don't actually know how much, since the vegetable lard is a secret recipe. But I know it contains more shea than the other two ingredients. I have found out the saponification value for it, so that is okey. But I did not know that shea and castor traced quickly. But now I know.
Happy I can help 😊
Soap queen has some excellent information on her site about oils and how they behave
@@SoyandShea Thank you. I will look her up and hopefully learn even more :-)
Some slow trace oils are olive, canola, apricot and sweet almond 🇦🇺❤️
Hi, I'm new to soaps. I really like your channel. Have you used Sodium Lactate in the lye water? what do you think ? Many greetings from Chile
Hi and thank you for watching ❤
I have used Sodium lactate - usually when I am using intricate silicone moulds or if I'm using a recipe without palm. It helps to harden the bar and I don't notice any difference to how my soap behaves ❤
Thank you so much
Every oil have is own issue. The most that cause impact on Earth are Palm Oil (deforestation and the impact of species), Soy bean oil (90% is a GMO oil and is causing the major deforestation in the Amazonas and in other Countries in South America and Latin America). Corn oil and Canola oil are GMO oils, (and the impact of monocultive and the impact of the small farm, a lot of other things) . Last but not "least" important Olive Oil , Coconut oil (the slave of the monkeys and the cruelty and suffering on this animal by the owners); both grow in monocultive crops. The most important is looking for fair trade oils. Some people preference the use of the animals fat, lard or tallow. I'm glad you talk about this.
That is so true. I read an article on the WWF site and it has been said that of all the vegetables oils we consume, the highest at 35% is palm oil but it only takes up 10% of the land used by all vegetable oil plants with ones like olive and avocado needing more land to grow. It's all about finding the perfect balance and choosing wisely.
@@SoyandShea uff Avocado oil a forgot it is causing the death of family farmers by the cartel (they are group that control drugs an other illicit things in Mexico) in Mexico they ask the family money and other things if the family denied the cartel kill the family or the head of the family. Here in CZcams are good documentaries.
@@jennyoramos8301 I recently watched a documentary on Netflix about it and was shocked at what goes on. One town has been drained of all drinking water because of avocados.
@@SoyandShea yes I saw this too
Or maybe is the same I watch, probably
I loved this video, thanks so much for showing and your info.... i was wondering if you mind sharing the rules and regs we have to abide by here in Australia. I would like to sell my soaps but not sure if I am supposed to be registered to do so? Plus label content etc. i know you must add an ingredients list and the weight of the soap slices tho.
Thank you for watching ❤ if you want to sell your soaps, you must register with NICNAS due to the use of sodium hydroxide.
I'm sorry but I don't offer advice on labelling etc for legal reasons. Heirloom Body care has a section on their sight called legalities and there is some great information and links there 😊
Soy and Shea ok i will check it all out, thank you for your fast reply. Have a beautiful week and keep your wonderful videos coming. 🥰💐
If that's the case about palm oil. Half of the the products we use have palm. Do they propose we give those other product? I use palm too and I do make palm free bar as well.
I think people are often surprised at what palm oil is found in. The most surprising I discovered in my research is that biofuel can have palm oil in it. I can only imagine how disappointing this is for those thinking they are doing the right thing using this biofuel in their cars.
I heard you can use Crisco in place of Palm they are almost equivalent. Do you know anything about that ?
Personally I wouldn't use Crisco as you need to know the SAP values to calculate lye. The ingredients on crisco is Palm oil and soybean oil so it really defeats the purpose if you want to avoid Palm. Rice bran oil is meant to be good but does trace quickly
Can you possibly create a video on how to use additives ie honey powder, coco powder, coffee, goats milk etc. thank you
I've got a few videos using milks in my soap as other additives too. This weekends video will also use so great additives.
Soy and Shea thank you
If I want to make cold liquid soap from 50%of hard butters and 50% of oils what will be the best percentage amount of KOH and NaOH and as well as water to lye concentration too. Could you advise me?
There is no simple answer to your question as it depends on what you are really wanting to achieve in terms of texture and exactly what oils/butters you're using. Just keep in mind, you need KOH to make liquid soap so you'll always want more of that one. This is something you'll need to test
Gòod idea to till for us all this information. BUT hope to know what is benefit of silk and I deal method when added also remember ideal for him
The silk gives the bar a silky smooth texture
@@SoyandShea .ths so much lady. Related is there relation between him and temperature when added. I mean is silk resolved or what happened
@@men3emali6 the silk dissolves in the heat of the lye water
where in Australia domyou get your Palm oil and large bottle of Castor oil?
From a local food distributor.
Good on you. All things that I consider too. I have decided it’s a great ingredient but needs to be sustainably sourced. The RSPO still needs work but it’s a good start. My cousin is doing her PhD on the economic impact of palm oil production. She did her masters on it too and in short, which was my conclusion as well, is that globally we need to support sustainable palm oil in Indonesia. The western world is already industrialised, our land is already cleared, we are already earning an income from it. It’s hypocritical not to support developing nations through this process. We can however help them do it better than we did.
But then I discovered tallow, which I personally like better in soap. Now I’m knee deep in researching the ethics of that. 🤦🏼♀️
Thank you ❤ I agree it is important to help developing countries do things better than we did. They need these industries to live. I find it frustrating that those who are quickest to judge often don't see the bigger picture around them. Unfortunately every little thing we do as humans, right down to wearing cloths, affects our environment.
Soy and Shea - I know. Now that I’ve started down the worm hole I can’t believe how big it is. I’m slowly changing everything. Love what you are doing.
I had same issue with palm however like you I researched it and I but the sustainability harvested also! Thank you for all your helpful tips and tricks! I too use Katie's recipe, I do use aloevera from my own plants, I use pumpkin pulp, goat milk is my main one, have fun keep soaping i can help you with your liquids if you would like? I'm on fb as js jsblueribbon Creations or just me jessis sheteron 😇 Happy soaping I love watching you!
Thank you for watching and your offer of help. 🧡
I never agreed with the hype surrounding palm oil. I use it. Thanks for your recipe. I'll give it a go.
I understand the concerns, but like so many controversial things, you have to look beyond the small picture presented by groups of ❤
You are so smart im so glade that you are no visionary
Thank you ❤ Don't get me wrong - I still think about what impact I have on the environment and do what I can to offset my business productions.
What brand and model scale is that?
The scales I get don't have a brand on them. If you jump on Ebay or Amazon and look for digital electronic scales something will come up
We impact the environment with the overgrowth of buildings and overpriced homes! Support your farmers and ranchers because we wouldn’t survive without them!!
I completely agree
