    Hey Gang!
So I'm finally starting to put some of these rants into consumable youtube form! I hope this pleases some of you guys, I can't tell you how much I appreciate each and every one of you. This episode is about my issues with the musical interpretations in the movie "Whiplash." The piece I use for this study is Caravan, written by Juan Tizol.

As always, thank you from the bottom of my heart, and be good to each other!

Just a thought, I have no idea about drumming nor do I know much about music in general or professional movie making lol, but maybe they used such square interpretations in order to underline the emotionless, robotic, not-having-fun-way of them playing the music so that it fits to the overall vibe of the movie?

Just came from reddit - asked you to play caravan and you did the rant about caravan you did say you would do HAHA. Would appreciate a vid or stream of the solo from the song. I enjoyed my stay and I hope you become successful mate. Cheers.

I get where you are coming from and you are absolutely correct. But... I think this interpretation is square as well because it enhanced the solo. Like the music is almost a warmup to the solo? For the teacher and student that is all that matters. Pure performance. As for teachers being like that... I grew up in the 90s. There was some shit going like this. I got some teachers like this at Uni in the 2000s even (stem field). I went to a jazz school growing up and the owner's son had a brutal upbringing. They were all musicians (he played mainly the double bass but bass guitar as well in his band) and his stories of how he was forced to train by his own father (a composer and musician himself) was not pretty. Basically child abuse. No wonder one of his brothers is basically clinically insane and the other one (the more successful one) didn't speak to their dad for 20 years until the day his dad died. It was brutal.

This is great! I attract to scripted stuff like this. I kind of failed out of music when I was younger, that is to say that I didn't have the structured training when I needed it, or when it would have benefited me the most. I like these insights into less visible aspects of the music I love, even if I don't quite understand the bottom-line mechanics of it lol.
