    Hey Gang,
Back with another little rant essay, this one about the profound impact Dilla and other 90s producers had on the way modern drummers play. This is particularly impactful for any of us playing hip-hop or neo-soul gigs. I've left links mentioned in the video below.

Thank you for explaining this!! I picked up on this randomly one day on CZcams rabbit hole. I discovered Chris Dave and Robert Glasper that day, but had been wondering what the off drum beat was and how to describe it. Eventually found the J Dilla connection. Best though was my daughter, who’s 12 and just started drum lessons, heard a track and first thing, said, dad that drum beats off!! She’s like, anyone can hear that dad, and I said, no, your mom didn’t pick up on that. That’s something special that you’re able to hear that. 😆👍🏽🙏🏼🤞🏾

So many great things to draw on from this. Dilla had such a great feel for phrasing - like D’Angelo. For me it’s sometimes about the beats they leave out more then the ones they play. Liked and subbed

Totally, I was gonna include stuff about d’Angelo from that interview too, but I was worried I would be putting too much of it in the vid and Red Bull would come after me lol. Thank you so much for checking it out

People underestimate how much this changed things too. It’s so obvious now because everyone tries to do it but back then 😮

Great video, Miles! Your explanations were concise, you gave great examples and you credited some fantastic drummers in the process, CZcams needs more content like this. Keep it up man, I hope you reach 1k subs soon! Almost there!

Hey man!! Very interesting and inspiring video, I’m a really bad finger drummer but this part of jay dee´s production always appealed to me ^^ I imagine loads of new mpc/maschine users must have real swangy beats maybe too much swing… all because of that quest love video hehe

yeah I remember when people started to try to play like a robotic MIDI groove quantizing machine like MPC - in theory is great 100% of the time.. 99% of the time when played by man on a drum kit.. sounds like garbage . Maybe one guy in the room will be doing a jerky dance to it because it invokes the opposite of fluid movement.
