  • Skullz reacts to Parabol & Parabola by Tool
    Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

      Ticks and Leeches, I can appreciate, but it may be my least favorite track in their entire catalogue. Some would say they even meant it to be.

      For sure. Listening to this album has always helped center me when I feel like I'm going off the rails. I know it sounds silly or cliché, but its kinda my "self-help" music. My eyes still spring a leak every time I hear the last lyrics of Parabola and I've probably heard it a few hundred times.

    If i could offer my perspective on the lyrics of Parabol... after Ænema, Maynard was teetering on the brink of true nihilism and his fans followed him to that brink. In the late 90s and into early 2000, there was a sense of impending doom and a loss of purpose. We were spinning rudderless, without any sort of goal or purpose and the grand promises of a glorious future full of flowers and sausages all ended up being just puffery. As Chuck Palahniuk put it, "We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war
 our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off." And the lyrics of Ænema echoed this rage... but with Lateralus, Tool was giving us an alternative to the nihilism that had overwhelmed so many of us. And Parabol/Parabola are the blueprint for the gratitude necessary to start the voyage back from The Edge. Importantly, there are certain words that Maynard sings with a capitalization that is lost in the lyrics. Specifically, the word "One" which I believe refers to your existence and your being in totality. And the way the lyrics are written and spoken, the end of one sentence applies to both the previous sentence but also to the next sentence jointly and severally. So basically, applying this algorithm, the lyrics can be interpreted as:
    So familiar and overwhelmingly warm
    This One, this form I hold now...
    Embracing you, this reality here
    This One, this form I hold now...
    So wide eyed and hopeful...
    wide eyed and hopefully wild.
    We barely remember what came before this precious moment ***(I have always interpreted this "moment" as being the moment of your birth)***
    Choosing to (Be here),
    Be here right now, hold on, stay inside (this body)
    This body holding me, reminding me that:
    I am not alone in (this body)...
    This body makes me feel... eternal (feeling eternal...)
    All this pain is an illusion
    This song is essentially a celebration of You being born, of your sperm winning the most important race you'll ever run, and a celebration of the astronomical improbability of You ever breathing, laughing, loving and eventually dying. And it begs you to HOLD ON, STAY INSIDE of this HOLY EXISTENCE because ALL THIS PAIN IS AN ILLUSION.

It gives me great joy to know there are still people in this world like you that actually exist. Over the course of 50 years in this life, I have become quite jaded and indifferent towards most people, for many many reasons I cannot even begin to explain. However, after witnessing the amazing way your mind works and witnessing the incredibly honorable characteristics you possess, it has restored some of my faith in humanity. I am not sure of your background/upbringing or to who/what credit is owed for bestowing upon you your gift/ability to be such a great example for others to follow, but whoever or whatever it was, I am grateful. Please continue to be a shining beacon of hope for those of us that had lost some faith in our fellow human beings to be positive and kind to each other. From this point on it’s only the beginning man they out due themselves from every track here on out, and in terms of this track this song is pretty self explanatory, we barley remember what happened before the moment we were born, hell we barley remember being an infant at all, but by choosing to be here in this moment not looking to the past or the future for answers we can find peace in the present by embracing it and realizing we’re not alone in are own minds and that all the pain we go through is just an illusion we are eternal beings, this concept is followed by the rest of the songs on this album, it’s an indescribable journey that will never be topped again by any artists, this album is as good as music can possibly be and even more, it being a concept album, you will see the end message and the point by the end by reaching the crown, this song combo is 4 out of 7 because it’s following the chakras of the human body, every track is represented by it to reach enlightenment, the symbol behind the figure on the cover art is the tree of life symbol, they show it on the monitors of their live shows when they played Disposition Reflection Triad 🌀 this album also features the last angry track of their career up until this point, it has a very deep meaning that you wouldn’t be able to catch unless you understand the background of what tool knows and do, they are into a lot of magik and the occult, it honestly pisses me off when people say their atheists especially with songs like parabola, Maynard’s Adam Justin and Danny have stated multiple times their into spirituality and metaphysics so that idea is just absurd, a quote from Maynard himself “if you don’t believe in magik or the spiritual realm of some sorts, your art probably sucks.” 😆 great reaction man can’t wait to see the rest 👍

    What you saod in the first part of Parabol reminding you of a monk chant was spot on, I'll explain why. A parabola is the name of the shape expressed by the function y=x^2, the shape is special because the y value is every real number from 0 to infinity and never a number lower than that. This song is based on Buddhist philosophy, namely that life has no opposites or negatives (like a parabola), the opposite of life is not death because the opposite of death is birth. Life is as ceaseless and neverending as Entropy; just as eternal, just as immortal.

    • @ks5553
      @ks5553 Pƙed 2 lety +7

      I've been finding it very interesting to watch this journey he's on, and in many ways I think it's because he's interpreting the lyrics from such a different perspective than my own. For me in the beginning of this song he's talking about an eternal spirit choosing to be born into a human body to experience "one moment" which is the entirety of that lifetime.
      As an old man I see all of the sacred geometry and spiritual interpretations, whereas @Skulls sees it from a young mans perspective, relating largely to personal relationships and self growth. It's been an enriching experience, and I guess I'm writing this as a reply to your comment because I wanted to genuinely thank you for that perspective, and for the math I have to go look up now. The beauty of Tool (I think) is that we're all right. Cheers :)

    True story. This song was the catalyst for my first out of body experience. Well this song and mushrooms lol. But in the defense of the mushrooms, I was not a beginner when this experience occurred. And honestly the dose wasn't even big. But I was for sure peaking. And I was with my best friend in the whole world who I had tripped with before and frequently went UFO spotting with. We also have the exact same taste in music and have bonded over music since we were like in the 6th grade. Anyway, we are both tripping on mushrooms and sitting in front of my computer watching the parabola video. And towards the end, when the third eye starts travelling up the body of the character in the video, I start to feel like my whole body start vibrating. I stay in a trance until the eye leaves the top of the guy's head and then all of a sudden I am looking down at myself and my friend from the ceiling. It catches me off guard and I freak out and the next thing I know I have jumped up out of my seat and thrown my chair backwards. I spent the rest of the night in my bed alone bc I thought I had nearly died and didn't know how to process it. Was a life changing moment for me and I have never been the same since

    This whole album means so much for so many Tool fans. The sheer beauty and approach of perfection of it kept many of us going for the last 20 years. After Lateralus Tool stopped trying to make the perfect album, because they already did. Instead, they focused on making the perfect track, which eventually they did with Pneuma.

  • @zoyuzmusic
    @zoyuzmusic Pƙed 2 lety +1

    Surely someone else wrote about this already, but the song takes many elements from the buddhist view of life. About how a cycle of death and reincarnation occurs, and how the body in which we find ourselves is only the current receptacle of the soul, which continues its journey from one body to another. However, the song invites you to enjoy the current experience in the body you inhabit today, and talks about how problems and suffering are part of the experience that makes you feel real, inviting you to live each moment as a holy gift to feel alive. Speaks of a familiar parable because according to the Buddhist view we have already gone through this cycle many times.
    It's a really beautiful song, and it makes a lot of sense that such a hopeful message comes right after schism that tells us about the suffering that human relationships sometimes cause. After all, all this pain is an illusion.
    Thank you very much for vibrating with the song in the same respectful way that many of us did

    So the amazing thing about you going through these song by song how they were on the album, you get a sense of the construction. Schism is intentionally discordant. It’s hard to catch the beat. Then they pull you into Parabol as a kind of meditation and then they drop into that clean 4/4 on Parabola. It’s like a palette cleanser to set you up for the next track. People lose that flow of an album today where it’s all just songs and not albums. Keep Spiraling
