- Skullz reacts to Descending by Tool for the first time
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

#TOOL #DESCENDING #ROCKREACTION - Hudba
Personally I consider âDescendingâ to be the best song on this incredible album. And the engineering is literally the best ever !!!!
Absolutely man! â€ïž
Completely agree.
I have a hard time picking a favorite. Every song is so good. This one definitely triggers the biggest emotional response in me. I have a hard time keeping my eyes dry during the " One drive to stay alive" part. The lyrics are so good and the music is so emotional it overwhelms me.
Toss-up for me between this one and Pneuma. Both true masterpieces!
Descending is just majestic
I think when Skullz said that he hopes Adam gets another chance to come out front on the album, some of us started wringing our hands like a super villain.
Yup. And it isnt over by a long shot.
đ
Calm before the torrent comes my friend đđđ
I mightâve done an evil giggle đ so excited
I sure did...
I didnât really get this song at first. It actually took quite a few listens before it hit me. Then I came to the realization itâs one of the greatest songs of all time đ€·đŒââïž
Feel you bro. on the first few listens it was like "Ok, good song. but letÂŽs get back to Invincible". One sunday morning it just hit different. Spend the whole morning repeating this masterpiece. Now itÂŽs my favourite besides The Grudge.
Descending reminds me of a mature Aenima. âHey, this is all a mess so letâs do something about it!â Also, this song live is an absolute monster on the highest level.
What a GREAT analogy.
I agree and feel the same way about Pnuema and Lateralus. This whole album is like a celebration of everything that came before. đ
@@OhOkayThenLazySusan Thatâs the impression I have too
The best song ever written next to lateralus easily đItâs THE perfect song and I think of it as the wake up call to humanity
Danny smashing that gong like it owes him money đ€
Did you see the video where Maynard switches Dannyâs mallet and he hits the gong with a big dildo?
This one is unmatched in how beautiful it is. This is my favorite off this album.
I always took the meaning of this song as hey, we're wrecking the planet with pollution and the threat of nuclear war and we need to wake up before it's too late. Oh, and one more thing...it's hard to tell on the album version but towards the end of the 1st instrumental, Danny stood up at the concert and smashed a huge gong behind him. It was my favorite moment from the show.
The ocean sounds that bookend the track also point to this theme (rising sea levels). The song is a warning and a call to action to prevent climate disaster.
After listening a bunch, my favorite musical moment in the album is when MJK wails "RISE!" It feels so earned and necessary listening to the flow of the about to that point.
"Stir us from our wanton slumber" is the theme for the last 3 years đ·đ€Ș
That guitar solo liveâŠit touches your soul. I will literally pay ungodly amounts of money to see them live again.
I agree i cant wait to see them again!
Adam is the lead singer of this album if you didn't notice yet.
I was waiting for this video for so long. Great reaction as always. And it's not over yet: Culling Voices will blow your mind, and then 7empest will BLOW YOUR MIND.
See you next week man!
I never thought about it that way, but I think youâre right. Adam was really front and center on this album. Danny was a standout as well. Justin was a bit more understated than usual. And obviously Maynard took a step back to let the boys shine.
Number 1 for me. Every Tool song is the best until you listen to the next. Descending just keeps popping up - I must have heard it 100s of times now.
Iâm with you on the listen count. I still think Lateralus is the greatest Tool track, but this is a close second for me now. I didnât appreciate this song on the first listen. It took me 3 listens through the album to realize this was the best track
This song is really a masterpiece. They really are geniuses of music and knowing how to really grab you emotionally. Glad you enjoyed it.
Best song on album. Top 5 TOOL song for me.
This song made my heart monitor on my Apple Watch go off when I saw them live because of how hard Danny smacks that kit. Whew đ°
This one was a grower for me but as time has gone on itâs a must listen almost every day!!! Get ready for the next two tracks, Culling Voices & 7empest, two tracks you have never heard from Tool, but itâs so Tool
I canât recall if you have declared an official favorite TOOL track but mine WAS âThe Patientâ until this mutha came to us. Itâs epic and Iâm glad youâre here now.
The album just keeps on getting better and better. âïž
Descending is truly the crown jewel of this album. Some of Adam's best guitar work, with lots of emotion and Maynard's best vocals. An absolute masterpiece.
concur. This is the song TOOL was meant to write.
love this track and the reactions! a prayer for humanity to save itself from its self-inflicted apocalypse
This became my favourite when first listening also. A sonic masterpiece. I understand why they said a lot of Tool fans werenât going to like this album. I LOVE that itâs taken a bit of a turn from all the previous ones. Letâs be real, theyâre getting older, it only makes sense to be evolving. But youâre so spot on - itâs such an amazing collection of riffs from all 4. This has definitely been the most replayed for me on the album.
Also agree regarding Adamâs time to shine - just wait till 7empest. đ€đ»
They have morphed from a Grungish band to a Prog Metalish band and are now fully a Progish band. đđ»
I think its called evolution and i believe these guys are beyond any other musicians we have known before.
Adam does more with fewer notes then Slash and Eddie combined.
I have worked in the climate change field for 3 decades now and first time I heard this track it was so emotional. Stir us from our wanton slumber indeed.
Yes, awake us from the wanton slumber.
You're a TOOL !
You'd expect a guitar to speak guitar, but Adam taught it a whole new language in this song.
This song to me is about a call to arms through our collective consciousness to the primal "body" of all of humanity to rise up now and act before it's too late. Not just to rise up off our couches and do something but to rise, ascend in our vibration/energy/spirit; for us to change now and ascend to the next density as our world shifts consciousness and shifts its actual position in the galaxy (check out the Great Year or earth's 26000 year procession) to one of higher electrical energy (Tesla's electric universe theory); the shifting between the age of Pisces and age of Aquarius. The saying goes "we are on this rock flying through space", or floating even. But floating isn't infinite as the movement of our planet is caused by gravity and electrical fields. The gravity of our sun, nearby planets, and each other star continued on to the center of our galaxy, is all pulling us as we fall through this space. Falling isn't flying, we will not float forever. If we want to fly and reach the infinite consciousness then we must wake from this slumber (the saturn frequency), wake from this lower vibrational matrix this world has us in and rise to stay alive, lest this be our swan song and epilogue. This reflects on not only the cosmic transition our planet is going through now, but the associated vibrational and spiritual change, to the current socio and political climate changing as globalism/communism/luciferianism/'cult of El' tries to take over and the world's collective consciousness is beginning to push back and not consent! We may just be in earth's and humanities swan song, "to be or not to be". Will we rise, or descend? The song itself even fights against it's own title as it ascends in tone, energy and speed etc throughout, willing us through all aspects of this song to not descend but to fight against that and ascend.
Lethargy and apathy have not so much killed the kingdom as it is *killing* the kingdom, present tense. I like to think that this song is a warning against the stagnation and apathetic nature of most modern day people. Its too common to see people just not really care about changing things for the better, whether it comes to everyday life to major topics and events happening around the world. For true change, better change, more people need to commit to it.
Well said, spot on
Itâs a call to all of us to get our shit together or else weâre done. They have such great creativity and imaginationâŠmasterful work.
I love Adam and Dannyâs conversation in this song! You can hear it when the guitar and drums/bass become un synchronized. AndâŠyou want more Adam?! Just wait till the 7empest comes Skullz!! As alwaysâŠgreat reaction!
You sir, are making gold heređđ
If someone held a gun to my head and forced me to pick my favorite TOOL song, it would probably be this one.
It feels as though you are wading out into the ocean before being pulled down into the abyss, spit back out, and washed back upon the shore.
This is probably my favorite live song ever tbh
My favorite on the album, especially if all the âcoincidentalâ alchemy theory behind the tool archive videos is trueâŠ. An epic masterpiece. I was in attendance in Arizona at The Monster Mash 2015 when they debuted this song publicly (without lyrics) for the first time ever⊠needless to say I was blown away.
I was there for that show as well. Iâm slightly envious that you remember them playing the song! All I recall is seeing them walk out in the stage dressed as Led Zeppelin and playing the best cover of No Quarter Iâve ever heard.
They actually played a version back in 2014 czcams.com/video/OIV8-7IixFY/video.html. I wish I coulda been at that Monster Mash show! You're lucky!
I know it not over quite yet, but I wanna say this is probably the best Tool journey on YT. You understand the music and its components and its clear you love doing it. A+ on the whole series and Its very cool to have gone through it with you chronologically đđ„đ„đ„
"floating isn't flying falling isn't infinite" damn, I always get such goosebumbs
Maynard has said that he has trouble keeping faith in humanity ... this song is about us destroying ourselves if we don't awaken.
You need to go see them live, because Descending live is another level, the solos, the gong hit, the lasers, it touches your very soul.
And Maynard disappearing for the last half of the songđ
Skullz "I really hope he gets more to do on this album"
7empest "Hold my beer"
Canât wait, will Skullz think this one is another âgrowerâ or will this one descend immediately into one of Toolâs best? đđ€
Always so interesting to hear other people's takes on the song, to me this one has always felt like its very applicable to a lot of the current economic and environmental injustice in the world, and is basically rejecting the whole "doomer" thing completely. Definitely my favorite off the album as well, love the themes of unification and hope in the face of dire circumstances
My fave Tool song from all their songs, it just does something to both my mind and spirit.
Iâm here for it đđ»ââïžđđ¶âđœ
Guitar swells panning left to right right to left â€ïž
After this album. Can't wait for the APC rabbit hole.
This is by far my favorite on the album. Just growing up with Tool at about the times that my own journey has matched up with theirs...this song takes on a whole new meaning when I've grown old...not so invincible as before, life is all about my children and their survival. This song helps push me harder and harder every time I hear it. Still us from our wanton slumber..... such a powerful lyric. Call yourself to arms and order and survive, grow, learn, love. Love YOU Skullz!!!! Your reactions are by far my favorite of all the Tool reactions. A lot of them seemed to jump on the bandwagon because they knew that the Tool Army would get them some views, but you went next level. I know in my heart that you love and appreciate the band the same way that we do. Rock on, fly high, and SPIRAL OUT!!!!
Very well said.
Right on, my man. âïž
Let's see where it goes is the perfect statement to any and all Tool songs.
"I hope [Adam] gets more to do on this album."
Oh my friend, just wait until 7empest
This one live in concert was truly amazing combined with their visual show. When it finished I turned to the guy next to me and said it doesn't get any better than that. We both just shook our heads and took a breath. Then they played Hooker with a penise, I think.
I've been looking forward to you checking this song out since the beginning of your Tool journey. It's my favorite on this album and I love it all but this one has always stood out to me.
My experience with this song since i first heard it in 08/2019 to this day which is 12/2022 (in chronological order):
1. hey this one is pretty good, you know
2. wow this song is reaLLY GOOD, MAN, LIKE WOOOOO
3. HOLY CRAP THIS IS THE BEST SONG IVE HEARD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE
4. YEAH THis song is amazing but maybe i overreacted a little bit
5. descending is fine and all but i mean come on
6. hey dude i missed this song
7. goddammit this is some gourmet sh!t
8. Descending is the best song on FI for me no doubt
BTW loved your reaction as always, man :) Of all reaction channels I watched I think I enjoyed your Tool journey the most. Your interpretations of MJK's always makes me go like "I never thought about it that way, this makes so much sense". Kudos to you, sir!
"That was a showcase for Adam"... awaits the '7empest' reaction. đ€Ż
I interpret this song... we are destroying our own habitat, therefore our own existence. Weâre destroying ourselves.
Remember the day Tool left a teaser of this album with the pre-breackdown of this song from Adam .. That was so expected đ Dude, your react of Tool songs are the best of the web ! A big thanks to you đ€
Culling Voices coming up!!!! đđ€â€ïžđŻđ„â ïž
My favorite Tool song
The machine called " Tool" went up another level... I love this album...glad you enjoyed it too :)
Come on 5pm! This song is so epic and thereâs so much going on I still hear new things! đ„đ„
This song is definitely a top 5 Tool song for me.
Sound the dread alarm! Best song on it
21:17 That Gong hit! Magnificent!
And when you hear it live. That alone was worth my ticket price. With the crashhhhhhhhhhhh of the gong I felt the vibrations from head to toe. At the same time two lasers converge in and meet perfectly.
Man, that was the best moment of many witnessing them live
My all time favorite ending to any song
Love this absolutely brilliant thanku for your incredible reaction much love an God bless always lovely skullz always wonderful to see you x
Best Damn song on one of the best Damn albums ever. Damn it.
I think a lot can be said about listening to Fear Inoculum from an older personâs perspective. Age and experience abound throughout this album (according to my subjective biases at least đ). They seem to be tackling problems that relate to middle age rather than trying to reclaim they youthful angst.
I agree
Just got my Spotify wrapped. Descending was my number 1 song with 155 listens. And I don't use my Spotify when I listen at home. I would have guessed I listened to this about 50 times, I guess its closer to 200. Also I feel really good about my 9,354 minutes listening to Tool this year.
Great to see you get to this one and love it. This is my current favorite song, period. I love the message and the atmosphere it creates.
E: OH yeah, meant to transfer this over here. Falling towards midnight is talking about the doomsday clock, where midnight is global catastrophe caused by us.
Culling Voices is next. My favorite on this album. Descending would be my 2nd favorite (on this album).
No one reacts better than Skullz to Tool Songs. I often recognize myself in his reactions. I have seen Descending live in 2019 before the album has dropped out and I have been so hypnotic listening to this one. It gives me goosebumps everytime I hear this one and remember the concert. You have to see this live man. Best (live) band on earth.
I really love albums but nothing is and will be better than Lateralus. But as always when I listen to a Tool Album I think the song that I'm listening to is the best one. In Fear Innocolum it is now Descending, oh wait Invincible, no 7empest or Culling Voices.....
If you like how Adam got half this song to shine, youâre going to love 7empest.
Adam playing the Moog bass pedals add the ominous vibe đđ»đ„
Itâs ok to cry. I can see it welling up. This band elicits such powerful emotions.
Don't get me wrong Adam's riffs all thru the song are truly works of art. Danny & Maynard are their usual awesome selfs but what seems to get overlooked is Justin. While all of these other guys are great he not only answers them but he carries this song top to bottom. What a freaking masterpiece! Has anyone noticed a lot of these songs talk about the end of something. There is no way they can stay this strong for 10 more years. Are we seeing the end of the greatest band ever? Sure hope not.
This an Invincible are BY FAR my favs on this album FI title track is a great song but the others grow on you so much that it just makes the title song an appetizer
16:09 Skullz is delighted by a slide guitar with ethreal tones.
They never cease to amaze
Hey Skullz, I listen to these 3 in this order: Descending, Bottom, Crawl Away.
I meditate to it. It takes me down deep into my subconscious perception. Dreaming awake, I have confronted many addictions and framed door ways out of mental prisons.
RISE!!!! ....My fav on the album. Another great reaction skullz.
The Synth in the mid-section is similar to the one in reflection. So this part let me think about an awaking wich outbreaks with the Gong hit. Pure Energie is the result.
Clothes and albumcover matching perfectly!
Dang, I'm early. I was looking forward to listening 'together', if that makes sense.
By far my favorite on the album. The lyricism is exceptional and plays so well into the overall theme of the album.
SKULLZ, Another outstanding review. You always nail it with your narrative of the song. I had a feeling you would like this one. Descending is my favorite TOOL song, hands down. It starts in the Ocean and rises all the way to the heavens with Dannyâs gong crash then right back to the Ocean.
SUPERB !!!
Descending is my favorite on this album and 7empest next best for me
I. Legion Inoculant is the actual recording of them landing on earth đœđ
Love your reactions and interpretations, Skullz, Iâm enjoying the journey with you!
Question: Has Tool inspired you to add musical elements to your own songs, like maybe guitar melodies, bass riffs, or tribal drums?
My favourite Tool's song
Also, this song is like a "hidden 7/4", in that it's 7/4, but doesn't feel weird and is easy to catch the beat, almost like a 4/4 song
Prophet and master lyricist. My eternal gratitude to this man.
My favourite from the album also (though 7empest is up there for it's riff alone). 1 lyrical addition I'd make is in the first line. "Freefall through. Our midnight" sounds like a reference to the doomsday clock. A hypothetical clock used to express how far from Armageddon (midnight) we are. It's a plea to humanity to save itself before it's to late rather than watch the world burn thinking "well this isn't my fault and I can't do anything about it". I love the buzzy effect put on Justin's bass (I don't play an instrument so I may be wrong). Don't ask why I just do. Also you're dead right on Maynard's lyrical style being like poetry. It's what drew me into the band in the first place. Excellent analysis mate. Next video should be pretty light on given the next 2 songs on the album
i listen to this song several times a week! (seriously) AND i get goosebumps with the change ups every time... I cant decide which song is the best on this album because i really like them all BUT i think this is number 1!
It was cool seeing you over on Spiral Out Sunday đ€đ» love your reactions as well!
Yeah I've never seen Trash Talkers go live so I had to hop in for a minute haha. Much love! đŻ
We all die. But thatâs not what matters. We can fly if we like, and by our struggle to be better, we can live forever.
But we donât fly. We float. And thatâs sad. Heâs sad for all those who donât realize that by failing to strive, they are wasting their divine opportunity.
But thereâs hope - as long as you still breathe, you can choose to stop floating. Will you?
Best song in the album for me, and yes. That's Danny rocking the shit out of a huge Gong haha. This song live was an absolute wall of sound and it blew me away
This was the first song they completed for this album. Caused some issues too, as Justin wrote the main guitar riff and originally had it as bass. But Adam liked it and wanted it as a guitar part.
I missed the premier, but YAY you got to my favorite on the album. Makes me shed a tear every time.
17:44 "That was some great guitar work" LOLOLOL, you haven't even gotten to the best stuff yet... LET'S GOOOOOOO!
Tool have morphed into a Prog band đđ»đđ„
Aww right letâs get it.
I wanted to set some time aside to watch it bc this is a LOOONG one
Alright this one hit home for me like never before. Thank you
One of their finest. They can lay their hat on this one
my personal favorite, such a beautiful mix between pushit live, 10,000 days wings for marie part 2 and right in two
