      The number really is just a serial number, it's different on every one of them. But another person who's solved it did in fact say that the little bearing wasn't actually the wanderer so I do think he missed something.

  • @benjgoodell
    @benjgoodell Před 5 lety +44

    My thoughts are not that you had to do this blind but that the numbers were like that of a combination lock that gave you exact rotations for the key to successfully remove it.

      I had the same lock but it had a different number

    • @lewong1602
      @lewong1602 Před 5 lety +2

      This might work if there are 9 notches on the brass pin and there was an identifying mark for notch one with instructions on clockwise incremental increase or counter-clockwise. Without an identifying mark it wouldn't be possible to know where to start and which way to turn. It is unlikely this is the case since I couldn't seem to find any identifying marks designating an initial pin. If anything it would be used in a way to guide you on how to get the wandering pin out of the lock but this just doesn't seem to be the case in this lock. I may be missing something without being able to hold the lock in my hand.

    • @JesusisJesus
      @JesusisJesus Před 5 lety +1

      There is no need for notches if the numbers correspond to clock positions, So this might require you to dial the pin in at the 2 o'clock position, then the 4, then the 9 o'clock spots. Then again that might be the angle of the groove inside where a ball or a rod slides when the whole puzzle is held at those clock angles...?

    6:06 I would check that paper again, and try spinning in rotations of the order or sequence following the number you discovered.. So it's 249 so if turn it 2 times clockwise, 4 times counter clockwise, and 9 times clockwise.. and if that didn't work I'd try a few things regarding the numbers and turns probably.

      Maybe, but it would require some spectacular tolerances to open from centrifugal forces spinning it in reverse directions for X amount of times in that specific order.
      A screw mechanism could do it but its fairly difficult to rely on threading when theres so many variables at play. Primarily lubrication and having it work over a period of time as a puzzle, and then degredation of the working surfaces depending on composition etc.

    • @fotistube
      @fotistube Před 5 lety +4

      Using the notches on the brass key I think the number served as a less random way to open it. Think safe combinations, like 2 left, 4 right, 9 left. Of course you don't have a clear zero position so, just guessing here.

      It's called the wanderer because that piece wanders around inside of the puzzle. Maneuvering it around the puzzle all the way to the top is the crux of the solution, so you could say it's wandering, and it's tiny.

      Chris L - It _could_ be raining? Or
      He _could_ just take the lock outside.
      This way when it _really_ pisses him off, he could throw it a whole lot further & not break anything.
      Just be sure & yell out, "four". So, that the lock doesn't kill anyone.
      There is a risk of someone else finding it, without the "wonderful" instructions. They could get seriously hurt:
      What if _they_ attempted to solve the puzzle lock? BUT beat their own head into a wall, due to frustration.
      Could start a cycle.
      Better stay indoors.
