I can't wait to see those wheels on your car!
Great to catch up on your 350z progress. Looking forward to some shakedown / track time with your new setup.
Thank you thank you
Zs and Gs were high end cars when they came out with very nice wheels and kits and mods
I was an aircraft plant manager, this explanation is in my wheelhouse. These have proprietary processes to make your wheels. They are heated to between 200-350 deg Fahrenheit (most likely) and then formed in a form die. Your terminology is correct. There are some that would argue this is a better compromise anyway, as they are not as hard as forged, and are more flexible and absorb shock as they aren’t as rigid. I’m sure they are age hardened (frozen for time) then sent to chemical processing. Those recipes are usually from decades of development.
I’m very impressed with how much you know, it’s hard for people outside of the industry to understand some of what has and can be done.
Very impressed. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words!
Full of info thanks. Wow Konig and Enkei are basically the same now.
They were good in 2005 just took awhile to catch on
2:03 Man I miss the days when people used to run these wheels on these cars, they used to look so good. Now everyone just runs reps.
i'll probably order Konig heliogram for my 350, i like the design a lot and they are very light!
I recently got my 07 Z and have been having a great time running 275's on the 9.5" wide Cosmis Racing wheels the car came with. I was initially thinking that might be a little too much meat for my level of track experience, but they're really growing on me. I would have liked briefly experiencing the lack of grip of a smaller tire, but I didn't feel like living with a full set just to experiment. Instead my shortcomings were, like you said in your "how to build a track car" video, brakes and cooling. I think I'll have those better sorted for the next event and I'm looking forward to it.
Anyways, I don't have a question, but I just wanted to thank you for the great videos. I'm really trying to consume all sorts of track knowledge from various sources so your stuff has been great. Everything from your TT experiences, your decision making process into things like power, and your Z-centric information videos. I appreciate ya!
Thanks! Means a lot!
Love Konig flow formed line I have countergrams in the same specs
Nice. Is the 3mm spacer statement correct? I didn’t get a chance to mount them up yet.
I got a used set of RPF1s in 18x10.5+15 and was surprised that they mounted up effortlessly with 275/35. Tien-S basic suspension. I assumed 9.5 max without rolling the fenders but not needed.
Yeah the 10.5 really aren’t a problem at all. I’m mostly doing 11 for the sidewall stretch.
I think concept Z has made metal valve covers.
I used Konig Flow Formed Hypergrams on my 350z track car as well as my EG Civic track car, no complaints. I'm sure I'll be using them in my RX8, if I can ever get the dang thing built.
You went from the best car ever, a 350Z, to the worst car ever, an RX8? Brave man. 😅
@@2THPWR LOL, I do miss my Z. The RX8 was dirt cheap and it'll have an American V8 versus the rotary. Just a fun track day car. around 425 crank hp and sub 3000 pounds.
@@chestrockwell8328 oh that’s good you ditched the rx8 rotary. The only thing it’s good for is converting money into noise.
@@2THPWR I agree, and even when they are right they are too under powered. I really did like the Z32, if only it were few hundred pounds lighter. Compared to the RX8 the Z is much beefier built, and compared the EG Civic a beer can is beefier built.
I'm very eager to see how you chassis mount that new wing! obviously the only way to do it will be to cut into the hatch?
Yes. The hatch will need to be drilled and then mounts will need to tie into the cage
Can you run 18x10.5 +15 square with 295/35 with no rubbing or spacers? I have the akebono bbk, just want to be sure they fit. What other wheels would you recommend other than the rpf1 for track? They are so popular for a reason but I want something different. I really like the konig hexadorm
Yeah you could run that depending on alignment and ride height. Might need a mild fender roll which is easy and safe to do.
Quick question, what are you running for spring rates? might decide to switch mine up after this season
Hey man, just a heads up on the +3mm spacers from some personal experience... I used to have a set of XXR 531 18x11+20 that needed +3 spacers to clear the upright, per Brian Peters. He was correct. I recently bought the Enkei RS055-RR 18x11 +16 and ran the 3mm spacers which worked on the street but at the track they deflected just enough to barely scrape my upright/spindle with the wheel weight that clips on to the inside of the wheel. I had to move to 5mm spacers for those. This actually busted my front right hub and shaved the weights so I need to go get them re balanced.
Thanks for the info. I run 14kg/mm front and 6kg/mm rear. I prefer strong mechanical grip to limiting body movement and roll.
Can I run the 10.5 rpf1s and 285s with street alignment?
Great choice. I have an 07 HR with stock wheels and just bought 19" x9.5 +18 , 19" x10.5 +17 with federal 595 RS RR, running 245, 35, 19 on the front and 275, 35, 19 on the back. The wheels are flow forged and look amazing. My question is: apart from the much better grip - the acceleration has been noticably decreased with VERY noticable rolling resistance, not to mention VERY noticable tyre noise (80-95kph is worst). Am I missing something or did I just choose a very heavy/noisy tyre?
I understand the wheel diameter is larger and there is much more contact patch but still, this is pretty bad. I have had an alignment and the over all diameter is the same so no gearing difference.
Any ideas??
1) check the overall tire heights. That seems to be good. A taller tire will lengthen your gear ratios. 2) weigh the original wheels and tires vs the weight of the aftermarket wheels and tires. Can just use a bathroom scale. If you wanted to you could also just get all that information from Google. 3) could be an alignment problem that is made more noticeable by mounting wider tires. 4) the weight could be the same but rotational moment of inertia is worse because the weight is more focused on the outside of the wheel (unlikely) 5) it’s not actually worse. Your senses are wrong and you need to compare actual data
@@2THPWR Thank you mate.
So tyre diameter is the same ( infact .1" smaller) The new wheel & tyre do weight more (mostly the wider tyre) so weight is further out. I think it must be the alignment as rolling resistance is next level.
Legend.
Hey Michael, what’s tires did you run before slicks? I’m running re71r now, wanna run 295/35/18 square but can’t find that size. I’d like to switch to nt01 next but it looks like 275 square is all they have.
Over time just based on what was quickest at the time or what I had to use for rules 1) Hankook RS3 2) Dunlop Star Specs 3) Hankook TDs C70 4) Hoosier A7 5) Pirelli DS 6) Bridgestone RE71R
Just curious, is your division letting n/a builds run wider wheels? I could have sworn NASA or SCCA made the same concessions recently.
I’m actually not sure. I think in one series the tire has to fit under the stock fenders. In the other it’s wide open almost. Like limited class in Gridlife and Global time attack.
whats your alignment specs?
Back in the days when you were street driving the car with the occasional track day, did you run a square setup and if so was it 275/35r18 all around? Curious to see if that caused any issue with abs censor etc.
Yeah I would run 275/35/18 or 285/35/18 and never had any issues with ABS or anything else.
@@2THPWR just out of curiosity how often did you change your wheel bearings with that setup?
@@guillaumeloriault4074 strangely I am still on the original wheel bearings
Hey man have you put two piece rotors on your z yet? It would be most beneficial for you more than anyone since you actually do track the hell out of this car.
No I haven’t. Not enough weight savings to justify the cost to me yet. And having to safety wire the nuts in the rotors sketched me out in the past.
@@2THPWR wow that’s crazy I didn’t know they loosened up like that. Maybe thread lock and safety wire?
Hey I’m trying to track my 350z, what wheel fitment so recommended going for as offset and length and width, also what wheels do you recommend besides enkei
18x 10.5 + 15. Volk Racing.
@@2THPWR is that good for track? I always that smaller wheel would be better in front?
@@kakashigonzalez2206 no same size front and back.
i have a TE37s 18x11-7 square set up. i can only get the front wheels on if i camber like 4%. I've had lots of tire wear. I can see you went with a positive offset. I just ordered 9.5 in the front now. how does the car perform on wet with 11's up front?
I have run 10.5 + 15 for years. I always run about 3.5 to 3.7 degrees of camber. I haven’t had the 11 wide on yet. But the car performs much better the more front tire it has.
@@2THPWR I’m only getting about 1k miles out of my front tires. Three alignments so far but no one has been able to get it right. I just can’t afford to eat tires line that. What kind of wear do you get on your front wheels?
@@gtbmw135i I’m definitely getting way less than 1000 miles. Unfortunately with tires performance and durability are often mutually exclusive properties. I only care about speed and how much grip can be generated. That’s best with a 295 or even 305 width tire up front and about 3.7 degrees of camber depending on the track. But if you were to use that on your daily commute it’s going to eat tires, there’s no way around it.
@@2THPWR Thanks so much for your response. I thought I was doing something wrong. I love your build.
Do you get the get the the engine cryotreated and WPC'd?
I had to look up what that was honestly. I don’t know if that has ever been done. I haven’t heard of it before.
@@2THPWR cryogenic is when they freeze everything to minus 310 and slowly bring the tempreture back up. They do this to engine components and the block to extend the life of the engine to 3 times as much. WPC is basically micro shot peening. It hardens the surface of the metals and allows oil to stick better to components, a lot of people who race do this to their engines and swear that it last them a couple seasons as oppose to having to do a complete overhaul or refresh every year or even mid season..... that being said you dont need to do it. It just helps extend the life of an engine by a lot
I reciently bought a set of 9.5" wide rpf1. Did i mess up? Do you think 275 35 18 will be too much bulge? What about 285 35? Dont track the car
Will bulge sidewall really affect performance / cornering? I was going to use 255 40 , 275 40 but maybe lower profile will be better?
No. No. No. Aggressive street driving sucks.
@@aafrankie3211 yes 40 is too tall. Shorter sidewall is also superior for final drive ratio and acceleration.
Do you win enough money in the tournaments to at least break even?
Absolutely not even close. No one wins anything except tires and motor oil. That was why I started a CZcams years ago to try and make it sustainable but my CZcams never took off.
@@2THPWR: You should think about Bring in a product to market like making your own spoiler . Are even offering driver's lessons.
Did you run into any fitment issues with running 10.5s all around ? I’ve been reading up and seen a lot of feedback saying 10.5 in the fronts would poke way too much. I wonder if this differs from different trims or if slight camber would do the trick because it looks great on your Z.
No issues at all for track alignment and ride height. I did need to roll the fenders to be safe.
@@2THPWR interesting, are you running the same tires on all 4 wheels as well? 285/35 all around?
@@finityhaven3467 yes
