  • A message for those who feel burnt out and caught in the reigns of hustle culture: it can wait.
I used to find myself caught up in a constant cycle of entertaining "the grind" without taking the time to breathe, eat, sleep, reflect, ground myself, or nurture the things that mean the most to me in my life (hell, I still get caught up here and there). Taking some kind of break is essential for balance and well-being.

Man THANK YOU SO MUCH....this video came just at the right time for me... For my whole life, I have been chasing my dream to become successful filmmaker / director of photography. Since I was a kid, I dreamed of working on big narrative films. I was lucky enough to make a living with videography/solo-filmmaking after finishing high school. Though I was still far a way from my dream, I mostly enjoyed filming real events with friends, family or things that I loved. I would pay my bills by doing smaller commercial projects, mostly with clients that were fun to work with. I always had time & some money to travel with my friends or my girlfriend to some foreign places while working on some little jobs a few times a year. I have filmed a travel film by myself which was being released in theaters all over my country. It was perfect, as it felt like I could balance all the things I loved in my life. Only 2 years ago, I started to fall into the trap of social media where I would start comparing my work to really big DPs that were way above my skillset & experience. I wanted to be like them and it would mean that I would have to work my way up. I applied for film school two times (which is really hard in Germany due to very limited student selection) and got accepted on my second try. Furthermore, I felt like this would open the door to a more fulfilled life as it has always been my dream to work in the film industry. Quickly after starting my first semester, I realized that the film school would take up 90-95% of my time for the next 4 years, as there was not much room for anything outside of that. I started committing to that idea, as I was excited to turn all of my focus into becoming a DP. My life turned into a rollercoaster from then on as my career path slowly eliminated all of my private life (friends, my relationship, travel and many more aspects). I was sort of aware of these things but kept ignoring them as I blindly chased my dream. Everything in my mind revolved around filmmaking, filmmaking and filmmaking. Slowly, I created this unhealthy habit of watching endless hours of CZcams videos outside of college that would also make me a better cinematographer. To compensate all the stress I have created, I ate really unhealthy, smoked a lot of pot, and slept way to little. I still thought I was kind of on the right path and that I was fully in control until recently after 5 heavy weeks on set, I almost faced a panic attack the first night I tried to relax a little. My mind was racing relentlessly and I got really sick...luckily... I had to take a step back and ask myself if all the hustle was worth the stress and anxiety and if working on big film sets was even for me. After seeing my family and friends from home and taking a break it felt like my heart was speaking to me again and reminding me of all the good things outside of work life. I started to remember why I loved filmmaking in the first place and that I had put myself under pressure because I was seeking something or someone I simply wasn't. Realizing that I could still do what i love but accepting that I don't have to become THE BEST filmmaker was the biggest relief in my life. I will quit film school soon. Only now am I starting to develop a more sustainable relationship with my partner and finding balance between all the different things that I used to be thankful for in my life. Don't get caught up too much in the hustle mentality, find out who you really are and at what price you will sacrifice some things in your life. So thank you than finally someone is opening up about all this bs that we get told everyday!:)

Been through a burn out and became aware of how to balance between hustling and breaks. It's an art, and I'm still working on it.

I feel like it usually takes one single experience of burnout to further inform how you operate from then on. Still, it’s a total song and dance. Hope you can continue balancing it well!

The pacing, intentionality, filming, and message in this video resonates deeply with me right now. Hell yeah. I've taken a break from making CZcams videos, but my professional life has felt non-stop. I've got to take another social(consumption) break and find myself again. Love you brother, another banger!!

CameraGuy: Hustle Culture. Hadn't heard that term until now but it makes total sense. This really challenged me to look inward and examine balance in my life, is my heart behind our content and/or narrative,...or.... am I just pushing another upload signed, sealed, delivered through the machine.. Rinse. Repeat. Thank you for that challenge. As usual, visuals, sound, all of it...spot on. We're due for a coffee..Love ya’ man..JH

What a video! I've really tried to ensure I take time out too, work is great, but if it's all the time, it becomes no fun. Allowing time for yourself is a must. It's nice seeing the "hustle culture" change, it's not always got to be work, work, work all the time.

The timing of this could not be any better. I just finished editing a docuseries that took a hold of my time for four months, and I definitely felt burnt out during all that, especially while also working a 9-5. Watching this now I'll always remind myself to spend time doing stuff for myself. Even if my passion is filmmaking it REALLY can take a toll on one's mental and physical health. Thank you for this Shawn! Keep it up and take care of yourself!

Finding balance in life helps you improve your overall health. When you have balance, you have time to pay attention to your body's needs. You can prioritize things like diet, exercise, pray or meditation instead of regretting that you never have time to take care of yourself. Great video as always, your storytelling really impresses me!

a number sequence I’ve seen repeat itself in various areas of my life over the last few years. First noticed it a lot when I was going through a major life change. It marked a new beginning for me and if I happen to see it now, it reminds me that I’m on the right path and continuing to progress/build on my life.
