Just wanted to drop a note to say WHAT a great video this was and how it helped me enormously! In the last four years I've gone to my local guy for two brakes jobs at a cost of $900 a pop! I purchased the exact products and installed myself- first time I've ever attempted this, your video was really, really a great tool. I'll add I couldn't remove the caliper mounting bolts and ended up using a cutoff tool, finding the right replacements for the front set was a real pain. Again, thank you, thank you...

I watched this vid as I was planning to do brakes on my Sierra 1500. I appreciate the advice with respect to the rotors. Another U-Tuber mentioned that these trucks basically go through a set of pads annually. I took your advice and acquired a set of the exact ones you recommended (the NAPA version). Brakes are better than ever. Over time I should not have to deal with the "annual" brake replacement (I don't generally drive down a mountain daily)
Thanks very much for advice. Who knew a 2 year old video would help me in 2017!
    Back again with an update....
February 2019 Brakes are still good!
Probably will do a pad swap in the fall
    Excellent rotors!
Once again thanks for the great advice

    Tip : 2000 Yukon Xl (5.3 L)
To Just Change the Pads...when the Rotors are Still Useable...Only Take off the Caliper...using the T-55 Torx Socket.Pry out the Old Disc Pads with a Flat Screwdriver,Then use a 6" Clamp...ot a Caliper Compression tool to Push the Cups Back into the Caliper, Reload the New Pads, the Same as You Took it Apart : 2-Sound
Clips on the Outside of the Rotor, 1- sound clip near the Piston Cups. Then Start Your Engine, Pump The Brake Pedal to fill the Caliper Cups/ back into Position against the Rotor.
Do the Same to the Other Front Side...= Quick and Easy. No Need to Remove the Heavy , Caliper Brackets.
    Always Use Jack Stands..!!

If you use a welding wide jaw vice-grip plier it is whole lot easier to compress the caliper than a bulky c-clamp. Just squeeze the plier closed and let it do the work.

I always chuckle a little on the use of loctite. Rule#1 all torque spec's are given in Dry torque. Rule#2 Wet Torque is generally 10% reduced (rule of thumb) but in all the different things I use the magic blue, red, and purple liquid on you never hear an adjusted spec. I guess that makes me a torque natzi. I never wrote anyone to get an official answer before retirement.

Great video. Loved commentary. Question for you if I may. I ordered the Raybestos R300 with Wearever Platinum pads for my 2014 Suburban 1500. Everything went back together great. Suburban stops great. The question is while driving i hear pads rubbing rotor and when I press brake pedal the rubbing noise gets a bit louder. Is this normal with this type of rotor and pad combo? I just did my wifes Traverse using "normal" rotor and same pads with no noise at all. I was a mechanic in USMC and did my far share of brake jobs. First time I have had this issue is also the first time I used a performance rotor. Note: I replaced Caliper hardware, lubricated caliper slide bolt and all surfaces are clean and smooth.

If the rotors are slotted (and/or drilled), they do tend to make a little bit of noise.

+The Car Doctor would you recommend ceramic over metallic pad for a Tahoe

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  Před 8 lety +2

Most Tahoes 2000 and newer would have ceramic pads as OE. I generally recommend what it came with for replacement. If it came with metallic then that's what I put on. I stay away from hybrid pads like NAPA reactive one advanced pads and the like. They will warp your rotors quicker than you can say pedal pulsation.

No, this vehicle is a bit older. I don't usually give torque specs for that reason. They can even change mid-year so I don't want to give bad info. Check out auto zones site
