    Capping was mainly used to protect cables from plasterers trowels when walls used to be coated in sand and cement. Plasterers trowels are rather sharp!!

      @callumhodgkinson2286 Před rokem

      I was lead to belive that plaster degraded the pvc over time and the capping is to create a barrier. Never actually had this confirmed, nor seen any cable that's been damaged by plaster.

    • @markpotter8280
      @markpotter8280 Před 9 měsíci

      @@callumhodgkinson2286 Yes you are partially correct it is because of old style VIR cable and the fact that plaster use to contain lime and this could over time penetrate the rubber protection (not pvc) of the VIR and in turn could react with the copper conductors. this is why VIR's were usually protected in either a string like coating or metal conduit or both. There is no real need to use oval tube nowadays but I would highly recommend it because it looks a better job makes it easier if installed correctly (top to bottom slightly through ceiling and one solid piece) to rewire in future

    Another great video. Love it. I've been studying at the youtube university of DIY the last few years and videos where you simply watch the person do the work are the best for learning. I hate when people feel the need to explain everything in detail and i'm there "just f'ing show us". Anyway brilliant video the constant banter just makes it that bit more enjoyable to watch. If i could give this 2 thumbs up i would. Keep it up lads.

    We never use capping here, never actually seen it for sale. We use 20/25 mm pipe, more for the ability to retire and not chase a wall again than protection, I did see see some of the stupid comments though. Good video nick

    100% battery powered concrete nailers exist for a while bud. like dewalt's. A banger. Just sucks on extremely aged concrete, always fails, but gas ones are 50/50.

  • @jonathanrose456
    @jonathanrose456 Před rokem

    Cement can degrade the external pvc overtime, plus having conduit in the wall makes it easier for the next guy, easier if you happen to need to replace a cable & provides mechanical damage against diy Dave. Not a reg but good practice. Not achievable on every job though as it increases cost.

    I dont see capping as a big deal tbh. Metal capping would be slightly useful I guess if it were bonded to the cable CPC, but who is doing that? I'd much rather rely on a working RCD than hoping the capping somehow saves me.

    I understand you can use Radials but surely its about what load is being used on the circuit.
    The idea of a Ring is that its applying diversity as we wont fully know what will always be used on the circuit.

    Also the capping thing - people love coming up with solutions to non problems.
    Like 'make sure the earth is longer than the other wires so that when someone pulls it it still stays connected' - what a load of nonsense, who's pulling on a cable cleated and buried in a wall?
    It's like people invent imaginary scenarios and come up with imaginary solutions to them and then try to pass said solution off as a superior way of working.
    'Ah, cables could potentially be nicked by stuff, so let's say capping is mandatory for cables buried and bonded into walls even though screws go straight through it.'
    Waste of time, waste of money.

      Mmmm ok. You can't see the benefit to protecting a cable when a plasterer is floating a wall? Yes there are times when it's not necessary... But sometimes it is the sensible option.
