- This is the first installment in a series on building the HM293 Flying Flea airplane. The video details how to build the wing ribs. It's intended to give those who have never built an airplane an idea of what's involved.
Thanks Malcolm, very comprehensive.
Nice vid. I’m retired aero engineer, and I recently designed and am building a microlight. I pretty much did the ribs the same; especially the nose piece, exactly the same! I’m a stickler for tight fits tho so I’m back and forth to the belt sander to get this pieces to fit snug. And I don’t use staple but individual weights being careful the gussets don’t “drift.” Great video, keep up the good work!
Nicely done my friend!
I used melamine board to make my rib jig, epoxy won't stick to it permanently.
Nice video Malcolm, looking forward to the next instalment.
What power plant are you planning to fit.
I have an Aero 1000 by Helvenco, using an e_props 160 cm ground adjustable 3 blade, still working on the engine mount at the moment, probably end up using cone mounts.
The 293 normally runs a 150 cm prop, but I'm using 16" wheels instead of 14" to keep the same ground clearance.
My plan is to get the bulk of the steel work out of the way so I'm not welding while working the wood.
I was a welder/fabricator before I retired, so that part is easy for me.
I haven't started any wood work yet, so it'll be good to follow your progress.
I'm guessing your in the States, I'm based in 'old' Jersey, off the coast of France, a bit awkward, as I have to ship everything in, so most of my time is spent waiting for things to arrive.
Good Luck.
I plan on using a Rotax 503
Hi Malcolm, Are you still doing those amazing paint jobs on aircraft with a roller?
A good quality paper guillotine is great for 16th ply.
Great tip. I’ve been looking for one locally but no luck yet
Did you fly that Cougar?
Not yet. It's almost ready but I've lost my hangar. On a waiting list for a hangar in Florida.
