Hello, I understand only realtors are members of the NAR, but what's the difference between realtors and real estate agents? What can one do that the other can't? Thanks
Most professions have a trade association that defines ethics and standards, in RE this is NAR, you are basically pledging to hold yourself to the highest of standards, especially ethics and for that you can include the use of the trademarked term Realtor (only allowed by NAR members) and may include that on your marketing materials and website. It's likely that clients won't know the difference. In addition, like other trade organizations, they will have specific member benefits that include things like MLS access, extra training, etc. I imagine there will also be things like group insurance (errors and omissions maybe), probably group buys for software and supplies needed to run a RE business (maybe a printer that gives special rates on marketing materials, docusign discount, the electronic lockboxes maybe, etc). I can't say for sure, but I suspect you can get access to the continuing education courses through them. Networking through your local or state chapters might end up being the biggest benefit.... could possibly help you get your career fast tracked by find a mentor, or even accountability partner, referral sources, and as a new agent there is a ton that will need to be learned, since how to actually do the job isn't what the courses are about. Alf you have a good brokerage you can probably get much of this through them, but if that isn't the case, or if you plan to work from home more than in an office, this would probably be really helpful to speed up the learning process as a new agent.
