First off, you only tested the *axe* form, not the sword form; at least, you didn't test the sword form the same way you did the axe form.
Second, there's a much *simpler* way to do a switch-axe, & that's simply have a swords cross guard taper to a razor sharp edge so that they *function* like axe heads when you flip it over & grab it by the blade to do a mordhau; *that* way, not only is it still as simple in construction as it can possibly be, reducing the chance of failure to the same as a *normal* sword, but when you're using it as a sword, the axe heads are *still* in use because they function as the cross guard. Maybe it's not as *flashy* as a transforming mechanical weapon, but it's still *Functionally* the same while being a lot more *reliable* .
@@ezrafaulk3076 first off, the weapon is a lot sturdier in sword mode, so why would I test that one as well, if it holds up in the more vulnerable axe state. The switch axe allows to switch between modes, so why would I test puncturing in sword mode, if axe mode is more suited to the task.
And secondly, just like I explained in the first video and in every trick weapon video before that: I’m not trying to make the most practical version of video game weapons. I’m trying to take a fantasy weapon and make it work without losing too much of the original flair. I know there are simpler versions, I’ve also seen Skallagrims video about it
@@NjordArtisan okay, fair; sorry, I forgot.
@@ezrafaulk3076 no worries, thanks for watching! 👍🏻
I gotta say this has to be by far my Favorite build of yours in Terms of sturdiness and functionality would be curious about what Happens when the flat is impacted by a sword swing
"Is my switch axe crappy or did I just make really good chain mail?" I really love the outlook here.
Cup is half full i guess 😄
@@NjordArtisan maybe both are true good mail bad axe
So cool to see the whole "folding weapon" concept come together in such a unique way! Keep up the fantastic work, this is incredible! Would love to see the Grim Fandago folding Scythe made at some point, maybe I'll just have to make that one myself though...
Thanks! And definitely do! But just in case I’ll write it on the list as well 👍🏻
perhaps incorporating some kind of simple spring lock to hold the handguard in place so that the sword mode would be more stable, and a simple squeeze of the upper hand to release the spring to change to axe mode. What I mean is just a little hook on the backside of the handle going through the handguard
Good idea!
@@NjordArtisan of course there would be the problem of cutting ones hand if changing modes in a hurry, but that's nothing you can't engineer over
love how the switch axe turned out, kinda wanna add switch axes with this as reference to certain table top rps now.
11:59 you can hear the silent "hell yeah" after that swing.
Great video
Thank you!
I think if u got some rapid morph, attack boost and weakness exploit you'd be good to go, now go fight a real monster 😎
jokes aside tho this is amazing, good work!
Thank you! 🙌
a tip: swing the weapon as if you're throwing it. as if you're going to throw it like a skipping stone... but don't let it go, even with the little whip motion. "throw" it through the target, with the leading and trailing edges in alignment on the plane of motion, to get a clean, deep cut.
to better achieve this, try a pinch-grip. Pinch the grip at the base between your thumb and the first knuckle of your index finger: like you would to hold out a dollar bill (Euro Note?) to someone, so that your thumb is on top, and the weapon is sideways, with the cutting edge facing inward (if you're holding it with your right hand, the edge will be on the left side). Sometimes called a Chef's Grip, it's also how one wields a German Zweihänder (held overhead, but the edges are on the sides, rather than top and bottom like a longsword). You can practice this by holding a piece of paper and swishing it through the air: trying to get it to not drag the air, but it's not hard; if you can skip a stone, you can learn this in 5 minutes.
The BEST part of this tech is that it's actually _easier_ on the blade, while also doing *significantly* more damage to the target! [EDIT: It ALSO means that the blade should still bite deeply, even if it folds on impact! imagine the sword is actually a blade on the end of a chain or rope, high speed means higher penetration!]
with long blades, torque is largely most useful for defeating an opponent's guard by physically moving it out of the way, meaning you need a lot of work, over a lot of time. but for cutting, blade-speed is far more important. this is because the total amount of energy imparted is less important that the rate at which it's imparted (the impulse).
I like to think of it like PSI. if you have 1kg of steel in a cube with round corners, it's not going to cut deep into a wooden plank. But if you have a half, or quarter kg steel spike or sharp blade, it will sink MUCH deeper with the same force applied, because that 1kg x Velocity is being applied not to a face however many cm in area, but to an edge or point totaling just fractions of a mm in area: thus achieving a MASSIVELY higher level of PSI.
So, "throwing" and "whipping" the blade into the target, so it's moving *fast* rather than *hard*, without bothering with putting your body-weight into it beyond using it to accelerate the blade, imparts the same force (or less) but in a TINY fraction of the time.
@QuintBUILDs did a knife-throwing machine in a few vids, and I think he touched on this concept as well, discussing why using all his might, he couldn't sink a knife into a board as deeply as he could when he casually threw it. this is also why tiny, super-sonic bullets can penetrate armor better than big, slow bullets, even if their total energy at impact is the same.
Remember, in ballistics, if you have to choose between high Newtons, or High Impulse, and you want penetration; Choose High Impulse!
Crazy that you managed to make something both very functional and incredibly beautiful. The resin in the handle looks great!
Thank you very much!
no more functional than a chunk of metal...
even riveted mail, cool stuff, mydude
That did way better than i thought. I thought it would totally break against a log. But it survived and still functions.
Very awesome man!
You and me both 😄
an interesting collab idea could be getting someone who knows how to use swords and stuff to try your weapons, I think the whip katana especially would be neat. the start made me think of this because even though its way slower its still neat to see that the moves are technically possible
all it needs imo is some sort of locking mechanism to make it stay in either mode
Can't wait to see the next iteration!
Now make a portable folding axe
I really want to see you make a charge blade. I think you've got it in you
Great job! Can't wait to see the next project!
I feel like one of the major advantages of this could be switching between Axe strikes, spike hits and thrusts with sword , but still it looks awesome and I'm glad to have seen you make it!
It's so much sturdier than I thought it'd be! Can't wait to see the next project!
I love these wacky designs.. Is it the most practical thing ever probably not.. But it is really cool. You did an awesome job on it and honestly I think it came out pretty well.
Dude, you are AMAZING. I get the concept of these videos, and I also appreciate that most of the comments are meant as constructive criticism, but always remember - you are a badass, and you're doing incredible things. Keep up the great work man!
Glad you like them!
I’m all good with comments as long as they’re respectful 😄
Awesome stuff
You oughta be proud of yourself
it is impressive that it works as well as it does and there is obviously gonna be room for improvement so the concept seems to be viable so far.
Great video. Its nice to see you are not afraid to go out your way with testing it whitch could end in scraping whole thing. Also as it seems that you have liking in doing transforming weapons..... if you want you can try something more complicated whitch is Chimera sword/mace from Soulstice. Smaller version would be necessary though :) . Looking forward to your next project!
Haters’ current situation: Standing Corrected.
That switch axe is awesome, well done man.
its not hating to point out that a regular sword of the same size is cheaper, more dangerous and more reliable. And reliability is very important when your life depends on it.
Love how the centrifugal force(don't @ me) of the swing keeps it in axe mode, as does the angle of the axe blade.
I don't see the sword unfolding when you hit with the sword tip as a big deal, since that type of attack is where you want to use axe mode anyway.
@
🌳🌳🐮🌳🌳
those spinning moves looked so dangerous, knowing how easy it is to hurt yourself with an axe
You asked for it, right 😄
as a concept build/ v1 build it looked and worked incredibly, the biggest two flaws I noticed were the locking mechanism could use an upgrade so it stays in sword/ axe mode better. and the bottom of the handle seemed to have a lot of flex going on when you swung it like a wood axe
Oh yeah! There’s definitely a lot left for improvements. And I agree, as it is right now, the sword mode is a bit underwhelming 😄
Cleft in twain!
Oh boy. Cant wait for the charge blade to come out
I talked briefly with a guy that I learned blacksmithing with, and I can confidently say a Switch Axe, particularly the bulky anime-like one from Monster Hunter, the big axe and sword weapon, is physically possible… it just has some inherent problems.
One, it would be hefty as hell; the weapon is already one of the heaviest single weapons in Monster Hunter, being a weapon that has a shift dodge at first, similar to the Lance weapons. The weapons heavier than it would be the Great Sword, the Charge Blade, and both Lances, and the Heavy Bowgun, and those usually either have low mobility, big shields, or just hit hard in the Great Sword's case, it is a slow weapon. Keep in mind Monster Hunter character consume effectively family size meals by themselves every hour, sometimes less than that, and yet don't get insanely fat but also swing these weapons around like they're nothing, so we're in a bit of a different league from them. And that's before we get into the next problem
Two, structural stability. The part of the chat with the guy that led me to believe it is physically possibly was actually talking about the crucial part that makes the Switch Axe, well, the Switch Axe; the switching. A solid, hefty metal chain in the main structure of the weapon, with the axehead and sword blade attached to it, would allow basically laws of physics and energy transfer to allow a pulley system and gravity to move the axehead and sword around on the chain, allowing the weapon to, in real life, do at least some of the moves from in game that have the Switch Axe switch modes. The problem is this would structurally compromise the weapon if methods to address this are not properly done. This can result in even more weight from solid heavy parts to keep the part structurally sound, which might mean needing a motor to assist in the swinging of the parts, equalling more weight. The chain might need to be purposely built for the weapon, equaling potentially more weight. Really strong magnets could be a good alternative if handled right and positioned correctly, but that might lead to hefty price increases.
Three, viability/practicality. This is the killer; no matter what, this would be a very impractical weapon. Not useful in modern day applications really at all, not useful in medieval combat, and funnily enough, by IRL standards, not useful for Monster Hunting. There's no way to fully eliminate the structural problems that comes from a pulley system actuated weapon, especially if being used to fight big monsters like the many types of wyverns. An actual swordsman on youtube did say the Great Sword can work for hunting monsters, given how much blade size the top of the blade had which'd aid in getting through the thick hide of a monster, which is a very practical way of saying it is reasonable by irl standards, but the Switch Axe, in the ways we could design it with modern realistic mechanics and blacksmithing would not be able to do it.
However, it would make for one sick as hell woodcutting axe. Should the axehead be structurally stabilised so as not to wiggle around, and you have enough muscles to lift it (which you'd need to be one swole and bulky guy just in regards to weight), it would actually work exactly as it does in game, even if just for show. That was the part of the chat with the guy led me to conclude on if it was possible. Before that day, I thought it could be done, but the switching part would need to be done by hand, just like how a bunch of RWBY weapon cosplays do the weapon switching. But with a simple pulley system with a hefty chain to bear the weight, gravity and momentum, transfer of energy, a decent understanding of Newton's Laws of Physics, and a big amount of muscles, the crazy weapon switching as shown in the games is physically possible.
And that is probably the best thing about the "Switch Axe" from Monster Hunter; the fact the weapon is even somewhat possible, if only just for show, was far more capable of being realistically done in real life, was incredible to me. Sure it'd take a bloody fortune of money to make even reasonably structurally sound, and the weight would be very great, especially if making it to size, but the weapon would be possible. Honestly, that's probably more insane than both the idea of thinking of making such a weapon and also the concept that it wouldn't be possible to make it one to one accurate to in game.
Man all other considerations aside, this thing is just so cool. It doesnt have to be really practical if ots so awesome
i think that a mace that transforms into an axe would be a much better combo because you want both of those things to be heavy and you can make the shaft much thicker and stronger where as with this you want the sword light but axe heavy, sword flexible but axe sturdy so they really don't work that well with each other
Totally rad!
Thanks!
Now, make a folding chair.
😂
I think that’s a bit beyond my skill level 😢
Oooh a WEAPONIZED folding chair
Surprisingly solid design, have to say. I think the solution to the sword mode slightly shifting a bit would be if you had a finger over the crossguard as well, like some swords do. I would personally have left a small portion of the blade blunt, or a small groove (I hope that's the right word) for the finger itself, rather than it being all sharpened edge. Minimises potential cuts to yourself, and your finger, theoretically, should prevent the blade from trying to shift modes, as you're physically holding down the crossguard, which seems to be fixed in place, whilst everything else moves.
...Only downside to this though is probably if it still manages to try and shift modes for some reason, your finger is probably getting caught, and if you opted to go for the finger groove.. Let's just say, your finger is not going to have a god time.
For trick weapons though, this is one of the better ones, have to say. You damn well should be proud of this. If it doesn't bother you too much, I might try proposing it for tabletop RPG sessions, especially if I'm playing a dwarf. Feels like it would be pretty fitting for fantasy.
Bloodborne the movie looking crazy
You can make a twisting locking mechanism in the handle to keep it in sword or axe mode.
Pretty cool 👍
It'd be cool to see a sword to spear trick weapon. Seems quite simple, yet more practical.
If you read my comment from last time the new one know that you can improve the design by having half of the handle slide up with the crossguard you could hold on to for a better grip and you could easily go back and forth from sword mode to axe mode by simply spreading your hands apart and bring them closer together
severely underrated channel ngl
The joints will slowly shear given repeated use and the metal will also warp and make it stuck in axe form, but it’s not gonna break unless you use it for cutting a log in half.
Going into the video, I would have expected stress tests to maybe cause it to take a set that would lock it in one mode, but not break apart in any of the weld joints because I've seen enough of your videos to know that you're pretty good at making durable welds. I did notice that there's quite a bit of flex at the join between the handle and the blade when it's in axe mode and the struts are up around the blade body, and I can imagine that eventually blowing apart. Maybe lengthening the struts a bit to provide rigidity when the weapon is in axe mode? I dunno, I'm not sure if that would work or just add to the stress.
I found gold with this channel
Honesty, if you practiced with the slighlty extended blade, the off angle would definitely make the sword a "wild card" to anyone defending against it. It wouldnt make it "better" per se, but it would make it more interesting
would've loved to see more sword
what we really need to see is you go back in time and use it in a war
Thank
That axe is so cool! Could you please make the composite sword from shadow fight 2?
This is cool AF!
Thanks!
I think the problem with doing the video game combos is just that the animations are made for a weapon that weighs about as much as you do lol
honestly I think I'd like to see more "realistic" renditions of the rest of the wacky fantasy monster hunter weapons in a different sort of game
It would be cool to see the telescoping blade of the lance on rapier or something more practically sized but I think the tip would rather sheath it’s self then actually pierce
This should actually be in Monster Hunter Wilds!
I think the highest functionality you could get would be the advantages of an axe (heavy end giving more power and the armor piercing spike), but the easy carry of a sword. The function of switching isn't that useful in the middle of a fight.
Amazing Craftsmanship 👍🏻👍🏽👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thanks!
Would be cool for him to do Bloodborne’s trick weapons like the Saw Cleaver or even Burial Blade
Could you fix some locking mechanism in the handle that you could simply Twist to lock and unlock it's sword mode and axe modes?
pretty nice :D
super cool
Thanks!
3:47 here you can see I believe one of his neighbors in the background near the red door lol
I don't know much but i worry that it does bend looking at here. i know you said you used a different metal that makes it seem like flexible but i guess it works better that way
Add a function for the blade to lock into both modes 👍
You’re doing Charge Blade next right?
Bist schon krass digga. RESPEKT!
Besten Dank!
The Blade & Sorcery modders haven't come through yet...
people mentioning B&S on CZcams has me putting my VR setup back up lol
Very good results in terms of durability and practicality too. Straight edge isn't doing it any good in terms of cutting ability obviously but still very impressive.
A folding scythe with a collapsible telescopic shaft and a war scythe mode would be an intersting direction to explore folding\trick weapons concept, I think.
I’ll put it on the list! 😄👍🏻
@@NjordArtisan 👍
nice
When in between sword mode and axe mode, wouldn't it be a sort of "machete mode"? Like a falchion
I'll try spinning. That's a good move.
I like this MUCH better than the whip sword that was too flimsy and conplex
@NjordArtisan
As somebody who makes a lot of these more experimental weapons, you must get a lot of comments like that from nay-sayers who doubt your craftsmanship.
If you do, I admire the way you stay professional in your content and don't let it get to you.
Big kudos.
i'd like to think that the negativity is outweighed by his fans and supporters. you don't typically get 65k+ subscribers on abject failure and defeatism. i tend to look at his builds as "proof of concept" rather than 100% accurate replication.
Skallagrim Test is mandatory
7:21 That's butted chainmail not riveted. Anything can go through that
Any ideas to bring into your next Dishonored sword build?
Plenty! 👍🏻
Charge Blade next?
This sword is more simple than the whip sword which means it works better and is more durable
Quick question, why not make it out of CNR? I know its a pain in the butt to work on but i could imagine that it would improve the overall stability
What’s cnr? 😄
I’m surprised it survived
Its best to use a switch axe with a power phial

this would explode if you tried to chop wood across the grain instead of with the grain
But why would you do that?
@@YourSpaceUncle to giggle. and have fun
@@YourSpaceUncle But what i meant is if you wanted to cut like a branch or a bone or something for example this might just fall apart, i think that cutting with the grain on wood like you would with a splitting axe is a very lackluster test that doesn't really show much strength
@@YourSpaceUncle a better question is why would you ever make one of these when regular swords are better in battle in every way, and a regular axe is better for cutting wood. and both are more reliable and cheaper and lighter.
