      The *simplest* solution is often the *best* one; all you have to do to *really* make a functional switch-axe is have a swords cross guard taper to a razor sharp edge so that it's functionally a pair of axe heads. *That* way, all you have to do to turn the weapon from a sword to an axe & back is to *flip* it in your hands; *another* advantage is that unlikely the *Monster Hunter* design, even when you're using it in *sword* form, the axe heads still have a functional use, since they're acting as the cross guard.

    The reason the Switch Axe works at all in Monster Hunter, at least as the game's lore justifies it, is that it was initially developed by an ancient advanced civilization that went extinct. Also, they are made from the parts of the series' monsters, which are stronger than any metal and can thus handle far greater levels of stress.
    Good on you for pulling it off at all, though.

    • @Sing_LoveWRS

    • @rathalomaniac6212
      @rathalomaniac6212 Před 9 dny +1

      Your comment is misinformed. In Monster Hunter, metal has the potential to be stronger than a large majority of monster parts. Additionally, while the original Switch Axe was indeed created by the Ancient Civilization, it was a fully metallic design like nearly all ancient weapons were. The technology to build Switch Axes was then lost for an undisclosed period of time before the design resurfaced in an undisclosed desert region, presumably Loc Lac. The Bone Axe, introduced in MH3, was the first Switch Axe in the series and featured both bone and metal design elements.
      This is of course to presume that MHGU is canon, which is debatable given the game's inclusion of countless characters and locales that may or may not match up with each other chronologically.

      Your assertion that the Switch Axe "and other weapons" exist because of a misinterpretation of ancient tech is absolute nonsense. Not only does it completely invalidate your first comment, but it also assumes that the Ancient Civilization hadn't already created a version of nearly every modern weapon. Were they the ones misinterpreting old technology? Maybe stop and think before you post misinformation.

      Maybe it would work better if you'd apply the axe part into the sword handle.
      Also I would find this interesting if it was more utilitarian, like a billhook sort of deal. An axe that for self defense purposes doesn't function exclusively AS an axe.
      There's Nordic billhooks that have a blade all throughout and into the hook, used in forestry. They're more like a climbing pick and really quite nice to work with, you wouldn't expect how the small bladed nudge grabs nicely to trunks and doesn't get stuck.

    While this is 11,000% a masterpiece of engineering and smithing, you missed a crucial detail of the Switch Axe: The tip of the sword has five tiny holes in it - well I say holes, they're more like little cupholders really - that do a lot of strange magic things like collecting the blood of the enemy and whatnot, but they're also the locking mechanism in both modes. Need to switch from axe to sword? Have to disengage that lock first.
    In the games, since the blade is so large, the hunters keep small glass containers called "phials" in the holes. These phials contain reactive chemicals, monster blood, and all sorts of other things. When switching from axe to sword, a striker on the inside of the axe blade takes off the stoppers on the phials and ignites the liquid inside, giving the sword mode a fiery boost. You can also load all phials into a single chamber on the axe blade and discharge them at the same time, causing a massive explosion.
    Obviously you can't do any of that in real life for just so many reasons, but it'd have been cool to see it referenced.

    I’m at 2:41 so barely into the designing/construction phase (let alone testing), but I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of latch you’d use. If you relied on just friction to keep the blade in sword mode mid-swing, then swinging it fast enough to, yknow, chop someone up is liable to unfold the axehead and throw off your aim (or worse, break), but making it able to stick enough so that you _have_ to manually engage it means you have another point of failure in whatever mechanism holds it in place

    There's a reason that axe-handles use Wood, and it's not because steel costs more. Your blades' spines might do better with something like Yew, as it'l hold the shape without bending as badly, and still be springy enough to withstand use without breaking.

    • @NjordArtisan
      @NjordArtisan  Před měsícem +2

      Yes axe handles are made of wood because it has a better size to weight ration. And since an axe handle has a large cross section it's strong enough. For this build, size is a very important factor and since steel has the better size to strength ration, I went with steel. I don't think a 3mm piece of wood would be able to hold 3 lbs with 2 ft of leverage, whereas the metal can.

    Pretty awesome idea I think it’s been execute quite well. Seems pretty functional. However, from what I know of for welding and creating blades mainly from watching forged in fire and some amount of college experience I would suggest that if you were to do something like this again instead of welding parts together after you’ve treated the metal weld everything till you’re happy with it then do the heat treatment, just starting with an aneling to soften the metal where it may have become work or casehardened then use forge clay to protect the spine of the blades during the hardening process. The clay will harden on the spine of the blade preventing the spine from heating up to drastically and then when you quench the bleed the clay will prevent the spine from being quenched, this should result in a blade that’s sharp and functional.

    I feel like the switch axe in the games, uses kinetic force, in addition to a switching mechanism, as in tri especially the hunter adjust something underneath the switch axe, to switch between sword and axe mode, like he is forcibly pushing the blade forward or back, using some kind of magnetic release mechanism. They improves the design a bit with the charge blade, and i think frontier has some even wilder weapons, but the switch axe was definitely a gimmick weapon, which i didn't feel like translated well into real life, without being extremely overengineered. I was a switch axe main in tri, before switching to greatsword later on, so i saw the animations a lot!

    Fluting is a GREAT tech! if you fluted your side-plates or used the similar dimpling techs (hexagons are the bestagons, of/c), you could stiffen those as well, or subtly dish them outward to add stiffness and strength to otherwise very thin and light pieces.
    Also, consider whipping up a batch of "silly putty", or getting some Oil Clay, you can embed your workpiece into a bed of the stuff, then go at it with your preferred tool to shape it easier. this is how fancy embossing is done by hand, but you can use it to ease (and expedite) embossing a flat sheet with flutes of any shape, or dimples, or just a "hammered finish" that can all add stiffness!

  • @Serenity_Dee

    This came out gorgeous and a lot more functional and robust than I would have expected from the design!
    If I could suggest anything for a hypothetical v2 build, I would try to find a way to put a beard on the axe blade or to otherwise give it more of a traditional axe shape. While we don't really have any way to figure out for sure if Viking era Norse fighters used them that way, the "hook" an axe beard forms is very useful in melee combat. You can grab a shield with it and yank it aside, you can grab someone by their shoulder, things like that. Also, it lets you get your hand right behind the cutting edge.

    consider 2 pieces of nice, straight angle iron, each about 1-1.5 meters long, which you can clamp in your vice (and a few locking clamps) as a post-quench straightening jig
    just quench your piece, and, when it's still hot, clamp it in the jig and let it cool. it's cheap and not too much of a pain, and can save pieces!

    If it doesn't have a locking mechanism, you could build one into / under the guard that can be unlocked with your thumb. It could be something similar to the legs on a square folding table as a simple one. It could also be modified utilizing other locking techniques, like the ones used in some knives, to make it more advanced and possibly more stable.
    Excellent work BTW!

    i would like to add just a little detail... If to the handle that makes it convert in to an axe, you welded a few (2 probably, one on each side of the handle) tinny metal straps, you would be making it stay on blade mode when stabbing, right now, it seems like if you tried to stab something with the blade it could turn itself into axe mode.

    • @NjordArtisan
      @NjordArtisan  Před měsícem

      Yeah, some sort of locking mechanism might be a good idea. Although I really like the fact, that it’s so easy to switch between both modes without one

    • @foldionepapyrus3441
      @foldionepapyrus3441 Před měsícem

      I don't actually think that would be much of a problem - it might matter plenty if you were trying to stab through something armour like, but fleshy bits... And as this style of blade profile will struggle with armour anyway - that would be a good time to go axe mode deliberately.
      Would need hands on to really tell for sure but I highly doubt its so smoothly transitioning that stabbing something will just put all the energy into that mode swap and not also be very uncomfortable for the softer targets... Plus if you stab very straight the tip and the pivots remain basically inline - so it isn't going to want to crumple, and if your hand actually slides forward to shift mode part way through a stab I hate to think what it would do to the target, but that level of force and commitment isn't going to be fun...
      The real question will be if this thing can actually hold up to use enough for it matter anyway. It is a really fun idea, but I don't think I'd build it this way myself, and to some extent the whole concept is flawed...

    This looks awesome, but I also think it would be cool in a significantly smaller version. Think like large hunting knife that slides to be a hand axe. Less a weapon and more a tool. That just seems so cool to me though I'm sure the smaller size would lead to difficulty with material stress as things get thinner. Maybe it could just be a thick chonker despite being short lol.

    trick for brass pins in hard to reach places: with you pin cut to the precise length desired, use a little glue (any) to put a steel ball bearing on each of the tips, then grip onto these nice and hard with some pliers to deform the pin, thus locking it in place.
    The bearings should then pop right off, leaving a clean finish!
    Alternatively, just use some weld to put opposing beads toward the end of a pair of pliers, permanently making them into pin-crimps!
