- At last the Roman field has dried out enough to get out with the hoard Hunter.
Things don’t quite go as expected when I end up finding a sword from 2,000 years and an iron axe head and it’s Albert who hits the ROMAN SILVER!!

My dad found a Roman hoard in 1996, the Patching Hoard. I've been showing him your videos. He's 85 now and can't do it anymore so he enjoys watching you!
Best wishes to your dad! Wow 🤩 22 Roman gold coins plus silver Roman coins and bits and pieces… what a discovery!!!
@@thescottishdetectoristThanks. It was valued at £30,000 then, before the gold price went up, and before you had to give half to the landowner so they split it 3 ways. It's in Worthing museum if you're passing!
Patching hoard
The Patching Hoard, West Sussex
Discovered in April, 1997, and excavated in April and May of the same year, this hoard of coins in southern Britain yielded 47 gold and silver coins along with rings and several pieces of silver bullion.
So incredible. Best wishes to your adventuresome dad.
As Cleg would say "EPIC !!!”
Maybe a dagger because its so thin and straight, but Clegg isn't going to be happy with you pulling swords out of the ground with his equipment...good God John, this is incredible
@@drew-shourd Ha!
You certainly don't understand click bait.
This video thumbnail led no one down a false path.
For myself, the video delivered what was indicated in the thumbnail.
Thumbs up (already subscribed).
@Engine Tuning I never said it was a false path...he was questioning if a sword or spear and asking people for their opinions and I responded that I think it's a dagger
@@davidparadis490 I think the comment was meant for someone else. It just ended up in the wrong spot.
I'm VERY Happy for John it's a tricky machine to use and I'm glad he found something with it
@@davidparadis490 There was a comment criticizing the thumbnail as click bait.
After my response, he deleted his comment :)
Bronze Age dirk, wow, field of dreams!! I wonder how much we all miss without a hoard hunter?!! Well found. Thanks for sharing.
As an American, it’s absolutely fascinating to see your finds. I’m glad y’all have been finding such a variety of items lately, because although I know you lot dream of a horde, it’s more interesting to me to imagine the amazing spectrum of inhabitants of the same plot of land over thousands of years interpreted from a few lost belongings.
Thank you for sharing the fruits of your labor with us all. 🙏🏻🗡️🪙🪓🏺
That Spear/Sword tip is absolutely stunning 😍 👌 great find, and another silver Roman Coin 😲 absolutely fantastic 😀 👏 Thanks for sharing and look forward to the next 😊
Many thanks Cape Code and thanks for watching. Happy hunting for you
Nice finds…a silver Roman and a Bronze Age letter opener…lol!
Looks like an ideal size of a dagger, broken at the hilt. Great find whatever it is... we laugh when Albert tips up, he seems to be very lucky 😄
16:13 it’s a BLOODY SWORD!😂 never fail to make me laugh lol😂 your finds are on another level mate!!
I never get tired of seeing Gorgeous George 😃 or anything else that you find. Congratulations on your sword tip and everything else! Cheers.
Much appreciated Andrea. Glad you enjoyed
Magic find that sword!
Hoots mon
Cheers! 🍻
Super terrific finds, guys! Thanks for bringing us along with you.
Much appreciated and thanks for watching
Nicely done guys I enjoyed the video. 🇺🇸
Thanks for watching Fred much appreciated
My, what a day John! Can’t wait to hear more about the sword/spearhead. You are probably on an old battlefield which means more to come!
🗡”There can be only one!” 😂. Phenomenal finds! (50K 🤞🏽)
Much appreciated Mack…. That was the look I was going for with the thumbnail 😂
John, I’m watching this from California, I love watching you pull the different things out of the ground, telling us what they are and teaching us the history of Scotland...
Just excellent! How thrilling to find a bronze sword! I'd be scanning the area around it hoping to find the rest of it. That was once some warrior's prized high status possession!
Many thanks, fingers crossed more to come. Same field produced a Palstave axehead two years ago!!
Great finds John and Albert. It never ceases to amaze me, what you pull out of the ground. Congratulations! Thank you for sharing!
Much appreciated. Happy for Albert getting his first silver Roman!!
I love hearing your amazement and excitement. Probably 2000 year old sword and really old Roman coins! Good for you! Amazing! Virginia, Colorado, USA
wow love that bit of the sword and amazing silver roman well done guys 👍
OMG! The patina on that sword is truly gorgeous. I am blown away. So happy you found it.
what a great find! I've found dagger blades before but never a sword. From my modest knowledge of the subject it seems to me that you have found the point of a sword which can be dated to 800 BC. I have a few books dealing with the subject, including drawings and photos. According to these sources you've discovered a little less than half of the sword...keep digging and digging, the rest of the blade and maybe the pommel should be nearby. Congratulation !
Could be much earlier my friend ,Bronze age go's back to 2500BC.Not saying this is ,but there is usually continuity through Neolithic Bronze and into the Roman crossover from Iron Age and sometimes later into Saxon and so on. All according to what part of the country your located. H😊
Loving your channel! Great Britain has got to be about the best place in the world for metal detecting and finding historic items. Since you guys have not had a modern war fought over all your land like the rest of Europe, must be a lot less junk to sort through in the soil. Congrats on the sword tip, amazing!
Many thanks Colin. Perthshire within Scotland has a phenomenal history and I’m blessed with some great sites. As for the junk unfortunately I’m not that lucky…. But it’s worth picking through all the bad stuff for the good!!
Good old West Country Clegg for lending out his equipment. I hope your subs go check him out. :) Great finds!
Thanks Clem 😍
Awesome dig Bronze sword and a big axe head. Going great today
Much appreciated Marc. Beautiful
Watching from Central Texas, USA.Great hunt. Tip of the Hat.
Great spear, fantastic colour, take that all day over a silver denarius , bloody good finds, well done again John 👍👍
I don’t follow many detectors but you are just so cool! Not to mention your finds, they just blow my mind.
Many thanks Hazel, much appreciated and best wishes
DetectorISTS 😂
Wow John, that spear/dagger/sword? is beyond good. Well done M8. Also, Albert's silver Roman is a belter!! Thanks as always, cheers, John.
Very nice to see the AT PRO digging Roman silver lol
Congrats to these beautiful finds 👏👏
Guess that bronze blade could be a find of the year already!
It's like winning the lottery 👍🏻🍀🍀
Get in there mate well done
Look at the that absolute beast! That'd find a spec of foil ten foot underground haha!
I hope not…. I don’t have the same digging stamina these days 😂
Love the patina on both the coins but especially the sword blade, awesome find my friend
No wonder your subs are soaring. You've been on the best fields/finds of anyone out there for months now. Congrats!!
I think this field in particular is some kind of previously unrecorded ancient hot spot.
Congratulations finding spearhead or sword great find for Albert. Thanks for your videos Len
Much appreciated Len
OH DAMN! you lucky man! you did it, great job and thank you for taking us with you
Much appreciated Sheila
Top job as allways 💥 ya 👍
Many thanks as ever! Happy hunting and thanks for watching
What an incredible find! The colors are stunning. And bronze. Wow. Just wow!
I guarantee you're getting a lot of new subscribers from the states mainly because we don't have metal in the ground as old as you're finding. Oh, and we all talk to ourselves using your accent, so there's that too.
Jammy swine. Wee rub-a-dub with the bendy thumb.
Yeah, I get a kick outta John calling his buddies "Jammy swine" when they find something really good. I catch myself now saying "wee rub a dub" alot now when doing da dishes. LOL
very nice finds
Thanks Tom. See you on the next
Wow mate what a crazy day well done top digging that, 👏👏👏
Your sword is remarkable. I'm so happy for you. Love your videos. Keep up the detecting.😊
Cleggy will be in tears. Brill video.
He was very happy for me, and I wouldn’t have found it without him lending me it, so I might snap it in half again and send him half as a thanks 😊 😆
@@thescottishdetectorist Of course he was. He will won't to now the settings you were using.
Know 🙂
I watch you from Massachusetts .Very enjoyable videos ! Thank you !
Amazing finds yet again! Love the patina on the sword/spear looks ancient for sure! The hot streak continues, can't wait for more finds!
Absolutely Awsome finds youve managed to weikle out today, Congrats of the highest order to you. GLHH, Mac.
Much appreciated and I’m glad you enjoyed
I'm no expert on Roman anything, but the blade looks like either a dagger that snapped at the hilt or a spear tip. Great video and finds! Cheers from New Orleans
Wow! Would be great to get the bronze analysed in order to determine the origin. Awesome channel, I'm hooked!
The museum is going to be very very happy to see that blade! What a find!
What great finds. I wonder what else can be found deeper into the ground. The sword/dagger is beautiful. Congratulations both on your finds.
Museum trip!
Haha 😆 oh no, not again
HOLY HELL MAN! Guess your luck hasnt run out lol. great job again buddy.
Damn John! You guys just keep pulling the most wonderful treasures!!! Congrats to you both! Another insane video!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
That spear/sword is amazing 💪 what a find ! 😃🤘
Absolutely wonderful video! Congratulation on the bronze age artefact! That is a beautiful piece! Sincerely appreciate you bringing us along!
Wow. Mr Bendy Thumbs and his Jammy Swine compatriot again with the outstanding finds. Great going guys and I look forward to so much more.
Many thanks Todd.
Bloody hell that's a stonking find and we'll deserved after lugging that lot around with ya, fair play! Bring on the next episode...👊
Outstanding finds John. Don't give up on the hoard.
Watching in VEGAS 👍🇺🇸😎
THANKS FOR POSTING 👍
Many thanks Joe. Out today and we got GOLD and Roman silver 🤩 video just uploaded 😯
Beautiful
Thank you for always being entertaining and informative! King Robert the Bruce!
Well done both of you looks fun Bonsie 🤩
Cheers Mr Fairy 🧚♂️
Will meet you soon hopefully got my deus 🤣
I think an investment in a pull wagon would be wise. If the landowner were to permit it. That's a lot of gear to haul around.
Great finds and video as well 😉
Much appreciated Erin. Many thanks
That's a great idea machine mart sell ahalf decent wagon.
Marvelous!!!
Superb video again John. 👏
Fantastic find that sword or spearhead, incredible 👏 cracking find.
Congratulations to Albert on his first Roman silver.
My guess is a dagger. Nice find!!!
thanks Tyler. Apparently what we call a rapier or long dagger!
Great finds! I really enjoy watching your videos.
Many thanks, Glad you are enjoying Derin! See you on the next!
Absolutely beautiful sword/pike piece. Imagine all the timber that was felled (or heads cracked) with that weighty axe head...wow...serious power behind that swing. That hoard hunter was catching some deep targets tho... neat machine for old school tech.
Many thanks Christy. Glad you enjoyed! Some great finds and targets
🤯 Oh my, nice dagger blade!
Exciting when a deep ploughed field has potential to give up its hoards. West Country Clegg is a great channel! “ Good afternoon my Lovers!”
Hoping that you uncover some epic finds with the deep detector!
If only you had found a bow too. Then you'd be ready to help some hobbits into Mordor.
Haha 😂 and a ring that makes me disappear would be great too 😂
Yeah…I’d vote dagger as well. What a gorgeous color! Museum worthy.
Thks for another great video. Nice finds. Loved the sword blade and Roman coin.
Between John, Albert and Clegg they could they could have there own Museum ! John could be the currator .😅😅😅😊😊😊
You guys are really putting Scotland on the maps with regard's o finds. what next ???? Keep it coming please
I would say dagger fragment. Cracking silver roman, there must be a hoard around there somewhere surely, keep up with the hoard hunter. Field of dreams for sure. All the best John and of course Albert. Good luck.
Wow this man is on fire congrats
Much appreciated.
It looks like a dagger. If used to block a blow from a larger weapon the typically break close to the cross guard. The cross guard could be nearby yet.
Thanks Jan. much appreciated. I’ll keep hunting for the other but found close to a river it could have been intentionally broken as an offering
awesome find on the sword john. happy for you. by the way was it you that made the local papers about finding the william silver. my 92 yr old mum who lives close to you was telling me about it, i call her every day from california.
Thanks Roy, that wasn’t me but I heard about it but it was from Perthshire and I think it’s a one of a kind valued at over £10,000
The fields of Perthshire just keep on giving!!
@@thescottishdetectorist well maybe the sword will get you in the papers, you deserve some notoriey.
Sword beautiful color and patina
See a Scottish detectorist video, clicked quicker than I can say good stuff haha! Always live your videos and congratulations for all of your recent finds! Smashing it recently
Me too👍😀
Excellent! On to gold!
Thanks AD…. Fingers crossed!
Sword/speer/dagger was for me the top find. 1 because its just cool and 2 the colour was breathtaking.
I absolutely love this channel. It just brings me joy!
Another interesting one buddy. I'd have been made up with the spear tip, or sword end.. Well done to Albert as well, getting his first Roman silver. Bless up 👊
Great finds!! Quick question, is it common in Scottish fields to have so many stones? Fields in Minnesota are very black dirt and stones are removed. I spent many summers as a child picking rock for my grandpa. Dirty work!! 🥰🥰🥰
Your videos are unbelievable, best channel ever!
Sooo much fun!!!!!
Great video again John.!!! In the earlier issues of George V coins, he had a slightly larger head on em. His neck line on the early ones reached down into the line of the legend. So you were right his head is slightly smaller🙂
Ahhh, yes. This is what I was hoping for…some bigger/deeper detection and some comparative detecting. Ahhh…as I suspected, the smaller coils only see metal that’s shallow. Blessings, my Scottish Detectorist friend.
I recall Commodus was the Emperor Joaquin Phoenix played in Gladiator with Russel Crowe. Just think that is a coin that was circulated around the time the real-life Commodus was in rule. Brilliant find, Albert!
Wow wow wow.. unbelievable John absolutely brilliant! You deserve every bit of the glory🤩
George did have two different heads, the early ones were larger & his head was so big during striking they would show through on the reverse side.
Thanks Tony, I’d never realised before, who have thought gorgeous George would have a head that’s too big 😆
went out detecting for the first time today.....found two coins in our forest....very exciting....not old but fun to dig.
Congratulations Professor! You’ve got to start somewhere and if you’re finding modern coins you’ll get new ones too!
Where do you live?
@@thescottishdetectorist i live in SW France...in the Dordogne valley....lots of Romans here...as well as cavemen.
Fingers crossed more finds and older finds to come!! Happy hunting and let me know how you get on
That’s so cool
I think this is amazing
Hello from North Carolina
Excellent work carrying all that equipment lovely finds Albert roman was lovely to what a field
Brilliant video as always. Amazing find John, well done Albert. Good luck to you both . 🤞🤞🤞
There are also Bronze Age rapiers and it could be one
Fantastic sword!
Awesome finds 😊
Awesome from the Roman field again. I would love to try that place. Today you got the Roman.
