- One of the last days Metal Detecting in 2023 and what an INCREDIBLE one - in fact one of the BEST EVER; an exquisite Medieval Seal Matrix and a Roman silver coin were the highlights but early medieval brooches and buckles and coins were also found - all with the XP Deus 2 Metal Detector on UK pasture!

The State do not necessarily want to own the finds but do wish to encourage finders to record finds through the PAS scheme. It is a great shame that FLO’s do not have the resources to speed up recording the and return of finds to the finder. This lack of resources will unquestionably lead to our history going unrecorded for future generations and the significance of the artefact will be lost. I, therefore, always encourage people to become “self recorders” within the PAS scheme. Another great vid ALexander - may 2024 bring you even greater success. Cheers.
Very good thoughts and insights Warren, thank you - I honestly think we should be faintly discouraged from bogging the PAS down with every cut half, musket ball and georgian buckle.... just for the time being and then when they are up to speed they can start encouraging us to bring everything again... a bog standard Edward penny is just not important enough to have be logged and data collected - but it can be once they get all our stuff back first and they have the time to deal with it! Phew.... hope all well and Happy Christmas
I entirely agree. I am sorry you have had poor experience with your FLO. My London FLO is rushed off his feet with Thames artefacts. It seems that like me you have enough artefacts to set up your own museum. I would love to help you archive your finds. Cheers.
Honesty, personally, i dont understand why anyone thinks the state has any right over a citizen when it comes to an artifact the citizen digs themselves.
Its tricky Kevin ...compared to some countries our laws are pretty lenient though I think they need some major updating... Happy Chritsmas!
Always had this interest in finding an historical Item & after watching Time Team I understand that the earth & structure around it all helps to put the object historical into context which is important for our history .
The only example I can give is a run out on the Cotswold hills above the Stroud Valleys . Years ago my best mate bought a metal detector which we tried out on what's know locally one of the commons where cows roam in the summer .
So we started in a random area just trying it out & soon we heard that familiar beep & dug into the earth find a military button , then we moved a small distance & beep again , digging just below the surface we found a number of crushed baked been cans ??
What We were finding is the detritus of the 2nd WW2 , this is where the yanks camped in what was knick named sosages a camp site holding US soldiers before DDAY .
After reading about it years later it became clear this is what it was & tho my mate who kept the button , I'm sure we could of traced the army unit camped there but those two Items told me a every day story .
My mother was a local lass who was picked up by an American truck & taken with other local girls to the US field Hospital in the Painswick area who held dances for the soldiers .

Merry Christmas! I hope you get to spend time with your son. My Christmas is delayed a week by my oldest coming for New years. We have Christmas and a big bonfire in the pasture. I just read that beehive thimbles like yours are from the 1300's. What a great lot of finds in that land! The Roman looks like it was dropped yesterday. Finally got some cold weather here. If you can call mid 50's cold. Should be even colder tomorrow. The chill gets you in the mood.

Love the seal matrix, what a find, we have not been lucky enough to find one yet and it is on our bucket list. The motto means that the letter is private and not to be read by anyone, "I am private" meaning the contents of the letter or message and would have been sealed over with the wax so it was visible if the seal was broken.

Excellent finds and video, Alex. Thanks for keeping us all entertained. I always enjoy the H.Q round-up and ID parts, I've reevaluated a few of my finds thanks to you! The 'Medieval' strap junction I found, turns out to actually be Anglo Scandinavian, so thanks to you, I'm even more chuffed with it 😉 I think that lovely decorated buckle you've found, looks a bit Viking? I'm happy to be proved wrong, but will be very interested to know what your Wizard and Warlock friends think it is. I believe the small thimbles you find relate to the times when whole families would be working in the fields. The children would have been earning their keep too, sewing hessian sacks and such in the fields. Halcyon days.... No vaping or PlayStation nonsense for those little tikes! Another bloody brilliant vid, wish I could get some good land to detect as an archiolagist it's still difficult so only really get to dig on our digs in europe and got no problem with people finding history, and the main history is well beyond a metal detector depth.
Thats very true Chris its all a bit silly - the British system is not really that bad just needs sensible people in charge with sensible ideas to make it work and to encourage us not the other way around which is exactly whjat has happened with me!
