  • People send me photos of bugs all the time, but I can almost never identify them because they are badly out of focus or way too small in the overall photo. This video will show you how to take a photo of a bug the right way, so that it can be easily identified.

    Please note, sometimes I do not always receive posted questions from viewers, or I do receive them, but CZcams does not allow me to respond to them. Sometimes I do not receive a question until six months after it was posted. These glitches do not happen often, but they do happen. It is my policy to respond to all questions within 48 hours, so if you do not hear from me in a couple of days, then please email your question to me at guyspestsolutions@gmail.com. Please do try to post questions in the comment section first and only use the email address if you don't hear from me. The reason for this is that other folks may have the same question, so it would be nice for them to learn as well. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Remember... You are very welcome. I look forward to seeing the photo. I am running a little behind because I had to take the day off yesterday to get ready for the hurricane, but I should get caught up today or tomorrow. Now that I did all the work to get ready for the hurricane, I think it's going to miss me. Story of my life. Lol.

    The only problem with this advice is that I am often terrified of creatures I cannot identify. I don’t know if they fly or jump, bite or sting, are venomous or carry diseases, etc… so getting close enough to take a good photo or capture it in a jar is actually rather difficult. 😅

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před 11 měsíci

      I see your point. The thing is that very few pests will attack you. A good rule of thumb is, if it flies, then leave it alone. If you do an outside treatment, then you won't have many of those things around anyway. I will give you a link to my video on how to do that. If they don't fly, then they are almost always safe to capture. Just get a clear jar, like a peanut butter jar. Wash it out well and put it over the bug. Then just slide a piece of paper under the opening and turn the jar upside down. The bug will probably fall right into the jar. Then put the lid on. I know it's scary, but bravery is not the absense of fear. It is the ability to overcome it. Fortune favors the brave. Now spiders may be somewhat different. I can't blame you a bit for not messing with those things, but again, if you treat the outside, then you will not have any spiders. If you really want to do them in, then treat the yard as well.
      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

    Very good point mate - some look SO similar, how can one tell at times!?

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před 11 měsíci

      Bug identification is a science. Some species are so similar that it can get down to things like examining the veins in a termite wing or counting the segments on the antennae of an insect. That is why photos of a specimen need to be very close up and spot on in focus. They also need to be taken at the correct angle. There are over 2000 species of termites alone in the world. There are over 50,000 species of spiders in the world. The truth is that, a lot of the time, you may get close, but you don't nail the exact species. I sent a photo to three entomologists in three different states and none of them were able to identify it. It was clearly a termite alate, but none of us could ID the exact species. So, you are correct. Sometimes the best you can hope for is to get close enough to figure out the correct treatment. Be well mate.

    How about spiders and black ants? Our house is old and these 2 pests are the worst!

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před 11 měsíci

      That's actually pretty easy. Just watch my video on how to treat for ants. I will give you a link to it. This works for spiders too, except for the inside. You can easily kill spiders inside your house with a can of Raid Flying Insect Killer. Just spray the Raid on any spiders or spider webs that you see. You can knock down the spider webs with a broom or dust mop. Spray the Raid under the bed, behind the bed board, under dressers, behind dressers, in closets, and any other place where you are likely to find spiders.
      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

    I awlays wondered why the pest guy couldn't identify the bugs I sent him after I squashed it under my shoe. But now I'm wondering since you said to let it die a natural death, does that mean I have to feed/nurture it, raise it in private school and start a Roth IRA until it passes naturally before I can take the pic? 🤔🤣

    Hey Guy,
    How should I go about dealing with spider crickets in my crawl space? I went down there recently and noticed quite a few of them. I'd like to get rid of them to further cut down on the number entering the house, but I don't want to end up driving more inside by trying to kill them. Any suggestions?

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před 11 měsíci +1

      The best way to prevent spider crickets from getting into your house, is to prevent them from getting into the crawl space in the first place. So, the first thing you want to do is treat your yard and the exterior of your home. I have a video on how to do that, and I'll replace a link below. Now that you've stopped them from coming in, the next thing you need to do is treat the ones in the crawl space. To do this, you could use the same product that you use to treat your yard, which is Bifen XTS, but the problem with that is that it has a bit of an odor to it. The odor will go away after it dries, but there is a pretty good chance that the odor will find its way into the house if you treat in the crawl space with it. Again, the odor will not last long, but anybody in the house may not like it. The smell is not harmful, but when people smell pesticides, they can get sick just from the thought of it. People figure that if it smells, then it must be harmful. This can cause them to become ill, even though there is no reason for it. Therefore, I do not use this product inside. So, I recommend that you spray all areas of the crawl space with Talstar P. This product uses the same active ingredient as the Bifen XTS, but it is odorless. You want to apply this with a pump up garden sprayer. Just mix it 1 oz per gallon of water. Apply it to all surfaces under the crawl space, including the ground. Start at the back of the crawlspace and work your way out to the entrance. This will literally kill everything under there. I recommend that you wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt, a hat, respirator, eye protection, and rubber gloves. This material is not particularly harmful, but it is not a good idea to breathe in the overspray, get it into your eyes, or take a bath in it either. After you finish the treatment, just wash your clothes and take a shower. Trust me, you'll be just fine. An alternative treatment for the crawlspace would be to purchase Niban and sprinkle it over the entire floor of the crawlspace. This is a bait and it is very easy and safe to use, but baits rely on the crickets eating it. If you want, you can try the Niban first. If it doesn't work, then you can go with the Talstar P.
      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

      @GuysPestSolutions  Před 11 měsíci

      There are several apps that can do that. Naturally, I don't really use them, but I have played with a couple of them and they seem to work sometimes. They seem to get it right about half the time, so it's worth a try. I have tried "Insect ID" and "Identify Insect." Insect ID seems to work better. Someone also suggested ""Picture Insect," but I have not tried that one. You can also try "Google Lens." It's easy to use and it too can work. if you get a good photo. You can send photos to me at guyspestsolutions@gmail.com. I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

      I’m so sorry that you are having this problem and I'm sorry for the delay in responding. I am on vacation at the moment, and I am on a cruise, so I don't always have internet and often I am doing vacation stuff. My wife and I have not had a vacation in over 13 years, so it was time. I will be home on June 11, so I can answer any additional questions you may have at that time.
      iPhones are not good at close up photography. See if you can find someone with an android phone to assist you. Send the best photo you can to guyspestsolutions@gmail.com. You can also watch my video on how to identify cockroach species. You should be able to easily ID these guys from that video. Please keep in mind that I cannot look at photos until I return from my vacation. After you get these guys identified, I would be happy to assist you with the problem.
      I hope that helps. Be well Joan.

    Hey is there different bait insecticides for grease and sugar ants ?

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před 11 měsíci

      All ants like one of two baits. Most of them enjoy sweet baits, but some of them prefer a protein bait. So, I use both at the same time. The ant bait comes in a gel. Just apply small dots, about 12 inches apart along ant trails. The protein bait is granular and it also contains sweet and fat that they like. Just sprinkle it along ant trails or put a little in a bottle cap, on a piece of paper, or in a bait station. If this does not work, then you can go nuclear on them. Just watch my video on the subject. It works every time. Be well my friend.
