    Infotainment/Navigation Upgrade to CarPlay
    Supply
    1. CarPlay & Android Auto module + interface cables
    In the video, I install a RoadTop CarPlay unit for Lexus:
    ebay.us/HWRbuW
    * I have NO affiliation with them and hope to post a review video after some use.
    * For now, I've used CarPlay features but will test Android Auto too.
    Tools
    1. Panel removal tools (plastic)
    2. Ratchet wrench
    3. 10mm socket
    4. Some towels
    A. Radio Unit Removal
    1. Open storage lid and remove central console panel/trims.
    2. Remove (silver) trims around the radio.
    3. Remove black trim where Start/Stop button is attached.
    4. Disconnect Start/Stop connector.
    5. Remove two 10mm bolts holding the radio:
    + one on the driver side
    + the other on the passenger side
    6. Push down shift boot and remove shift knob.
    7. Cover the shift stick with towels (to protect the radio unit later).
    8. Remove the radio unit, and disconnect the connector at the top.
    B. Screen Removal
    1. Remove front and back trims around the screen.
    2. Remove back cover of the screen.
    3. Remove three 10mm bolts/nuts on the screen bracket.
    4. Lay towels in the front.
    5. Remove the screen and place it on the towels.
    C. Connect CarPlay Unit Cables
    1. Connect LVDS cables.
    2. Connect CAN cables.
    3. Connect USB / Video cables.
    4. Connect RF Antenna cable.
    5. Change Toggle Switch according to instructions.
    D. Connect to Radio Unit Host
    For each connector, chain them together this way:
    1. Remove the original cable;
    2. Plug it to the female cable to CarPlay;
    3. Plug the carplay male to the host socket, where the original cable is removed.
    Do this for the following cables/connectors:
    1. Power or CAN cables.
    2. Audio out cables.
    E. Connect to Screen
    1. Route LVDS cable from the back of the radio to screen.
    2. Chain the LVDS connectors with the original cable/connector.
    F. Test CarPlay
    1. Reconnect Start/Stop and start the car.
    2. Switch Audio Source to AUX.
    3. Turn your phone's wifi, bluetooth, and connect to CarPlay.
    4. Test the features.
    G. Reassembly
    1. Optional: Route the USB cable to glove box. The unit has wireless carplay so USB is not required.
    2. Place the CarPlay unit in the back behind Radio. Arrange the cables and tuck them in the back.
    3. You can stick the antenna to the side of the radio box.
    4. Put the radio unit back, attach to the clips, 10mm bolts, and reattach the trims.
    5. Reinstall the screen with 3x10mm bolt/nuts, back cover, front and back trims.
    DONE.
    Hope this video is informative.
    Be safe, stay dirty. Enjoy the work!
    God bless!

    Just fit this on a 2018 Lexus RX 450hL Premium AWD w/ Mark Levinson. Thank you for the video Professor! Very easy to follow and made the installation a breeze.
    Only thing I would reconsider doing in retrospect is leaving the LVDS cable off and dropping the single end through the top of the dashboard to make it a bit easier to route to the Carplay unit.
    I attached mine to the unit first and didn't want to risk damaging it by pulling it out, so it took a good amount of wrangling to run up to where the display is (used a surgical mask as a rubber band to fish it up and through).
    Additionally for sound settings, first thing I did in the settings menu was turn off all EQ/Loudness adjustments to ensure there was no extra DSP happening to my audio. My carplay audio connector also came with a male 3.5mm aux and an audio ground cable that I left unconnected.

    An update after 15 months of use: The unit has been working well and I've not encountered the issue of overheating, which some people have reported about. However, here are a few things I may do differently than what I presented in the video--
    1) Do not attach the antenna to any metal, which I did wrong in the video.
    2) Definitely keep the USB cable in the glove box, which provides charging and wired Carplay.
    3) You may consider placing the Carplay unit in the glove box too in case you need to access it for troubleshooting. Not sure, though, how this may interplay with the potential overheating issue.
    I'd love to hear about how it worked out (or not) for you. Feel free to ask questions and/or share your experiences in the comments!

      Thanks! Unless the latest unit has different cables, I presented all cables necessary for the one installed in the video. There were CarPlay OS System Settings that I changed to make the joystick (remote lever) work more smoothly but I don't recall any specific cable for that purpose. Again, the product may have evolved/updated so feel free to share what specific cable necessary for your installation and perhaps the link to your latest purchase, if you don't mind sharing it.

    Great demonstration, I installed this unit in my IS a few months back. So far has been pretty great.
    Only problem when installing was in the manual it specified dip switch setting for my car, but in fact it was another setting that was compatible. So try out switch settings if ur unit does not show up.
    Another small problem is I find that there is a slight (about 1 second) audio delay, which is not a huge deal and does not affect turn by turn navigation.
    In terms of reliability, I’ve had the unit automatically restart in middle of drives. But it usually boots right back up. And sometimes it takes a few seconds for Bluetooth to connect. (Wired connection might be better)
    Otherwise this is a great aftermarket unit for the price.

    Hey man. Thank you so much for the great instruction. By far one of the best tutorials on CZcams.
    I bought the same product from the website you mentioned. I have an issue and hope you can help me resolve it.
    When I switch to carplay, half of the screen shows the carplay and the other half still shows the original car menu which is blinking. Is there anyway to get this resolved and change it to full screen in carplay mode? Really appreciate any thoughts. The manufacturer has been unable to help me so far.

    • @profsg
      @profsg  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Glad the video was helpful! I haven't encountered or heard about this issue, but suspect it might be a connection problem. However, it'd be useful to rule out other possibilities:
      1) Have you tried both wired and wireless Carplay and got the same result?
      2) Have you tried a different phone (perhaps an Android phone for Android Auto)? Does it also show a half screen?
      3) When it's on the Carplay mode, and you shift to Reverse, does it change to full-screen reverse camera? Any glitch/blinking there?
      If you can access Roadtop/Carplay system settings with the half screen, there are Display/Screen related settings you can try. If your DIP settings are correct for your make/model/config and no issues with the connectors--some people have reported connection problems and you can use contact cleaner and reconnect to make sure--it might be a defective unit and/or requires software updates.
      As for Roadtop support, I know they are in China (a different time zone) so expect some delay in their response. The best is to shoot a video showing the problem and share that with them to figure out.

      @@profsg Thanks much for taking the time to respond. I have disconnected the whole unit and connected it back with no luck. Still have same issue. I also messed with the CarPlay screen settings and it doesn’t give me the option to go full screen. And I know it’s not related to the phone or wireless either because the very first CarPlay logo that shows up when the system gets turned on is also on a split screen before I even try to connect my phone. I have been in touch with customer service but they just keep sending me different dial codes and nothing seems to resolve it so far. Thanks again for your support

    Great video Professor, neat and clean during all the steps. Also like your voice, sounds like you speak with very slight German accent or German speaking manner. Anyway, just noticed one problem - according to the manufacturer you should not glue the RF/WIFI antenna to the metal surfaces, including the box itself, because this may cause some wireless connection signal issues. Instead you should glue it to the plastic surfaces, more closer to the driver, or where the phone usually lies.
    Another question - how different is the sound quality, compared to your oem bluetooth and aux?
    Also, when having a call inside the car, do you use oem BT phone or carplay phone via aux?

      On the antenna, you are right! I shouldn't have attached it to any metal because of potential interference.

I can't hear the Android Auto audio and Google Maps. what can it be? I'm sure I followed the instructions perfectly but I have these problems. do you have some advice? Thank you

    • @profsg
      @profsg  Před měsícem +1

      Sure. Please double check DIP settings on your model/year as it's specific to your model/configuration per Roadtop user manual. For the two problems:
      1) If the remote control doesn't work smoothly, there is an option in the carplay system setting regarding your remote control, e.g. touchpad, remote lever (joystick), etc. Select the correct one for your model.
      2) As for the audio, make sure you are on AUX (or per your unit's instructions). Do test another app (e.g. with music/youtube/video) to see if you can hear any sound. There is an option on Google Maps to enable/disable voice guidance and sometimes it's disabled. Also, make sure you disconnect the original Lexus bluetooth connection on your phone AND turn off "use original/factory bluetooth" on the carplay's system settings.
      I discussed some of these settings in the video here: czcams.com/video/yaBkp1MbwIU/video.htmlsi=tzC97I6sKdYLtgh-

I haven't solved the problem of the remote touch malfunctioning yet, I'll have to have time to reopen the whole car and redo other tests with the ECU settings in the DIP settings (the software settings don't solve the problem) for now I have to admit that I'm a a little disappointed with the performance of this product, also on my Lexus CT Google Maps or any other app is not displayed in full screen. I also saw the video you recommended but it doesn't solve the problems, I'm thinking of returning the product because if I can't solve it I don't see a real advantage in using this control unit for Android Auto, it would have been better to use the smartphone. • @profsg
      @profsg  Před měsícem +1

      If it's Android Auto, you can toggle the fullscreen mode by selecting/pressing the app icon (e.g. for Google Maps) on the left. Not sure if this will help but I have another review video more focused on the Android Auto: czcams.com/video/WFQJfbzUvdw/video.html
      If you do reopen the radio to change DIP settings etc., I'd recommend you keep the unit inside your glove box and reroute the cables. Many people do that because it's much easier to access it whenever there is an issue. Best luck!

I have a small Anker Soundcore 2 speaker (I use on bluetooth with a spare phone for nav) the speaker fits perfectly in the empty compartment under the radio, would be nice to route the sound to that so I could still use the Media/Radio setting and still get navigation audio to the external speaker. Or is the only thing you have to do when you turn the car on to hold the Menu button down? Have you noticed any lag in the interface or audio?

    • @profsg

      Sure! It automatically goes back to CarPlay and aux if it was in that mode when you turned off the car the last time. No need to switch to aux or long press menu in this case. Hello Professor. In the video, the RF antenna was connected to the CarPlay unit, but was it also connected to the car side? In case of my unit, a Wifi cable was included instead of an RF antenna cable, so does it need to be connected to the car side?

    • @profsg
      @profsg  Před 7 měsíci +1

      The antenna is connected to the Carplay unit so it can transmit wireless signals. However, it doesn't need to connect to the car itself. You can attach (glue) it to something plastic--NOT metal which may interfere and I did this wrong in the video--on the radio unit so it stays in place. I assume the Wifi cable you have serves the same purpose and should be connected to the carplay module only.

    • @user-hn8ro4wj5l

      Thank you very much for your detailed explanation. The antenna cable does not need to be connected to the car side, but it is important to fix it to the resin part so that it does not touch metal. I understood it very well.

      Good morning! If this is what you meant, amzn.to/4cCfumH for CarlinKit 5.0 Wireless CarPlay/Android Auto Adapter USB for Factory Wired CarPlay Cars, then the answer is no. As the name suggests, it's for cars already with factory WIRED CarPlay or Android Auto and the Carlink kit will add WIRELESS connectivity to the existing functionality. On 2017 Lexus RX350 shown in the video, it doesn't come with any factory CarPlay module (wired or wireless) and one must follow the installation process in the video to add an aftermarket module to the radio unit. Lexus only introduced CarPlay in later years, which is a typical Toyota strategy to "innovate" slowly.

      1) Make sure your audio is on AUX and the volume is turned on.
      2) Disable the connection with the original Lexus Bluetooth connection so there is no interference.
      3) Connect your phone with USB only to see if it's related to the wireless connection.
      4) Try another iPhone with the USB connection.
      5) If music doesn't play consistently, how about any other apps that output audio? For example, can you hear from Google Maps' voice guidance?
      There are also options in the Carplay OS systems settings related to audio or mic pre-configs. If none of these works, the unit might be defective.

      I'd say it works fine, but no comparison to a touch screen. It scrolls horizontally first. For example, on the home/Apps screen, when you swipe the joystick to the right, it goes from one app to another in the first row, then the second row, and after that, the next screen. I arrange my apps in such an order so I can get to the most used one first, e.g. maps among the first apps on the first screen.
      When driving, I rarely use the joystick. It is easier to use the other buttons: on wheel buttons to take/reject calls, map button to switch between full map/split screen/home screen, etc. Most of the time, I long press the Joystick or the Enter button to activate Siri, and ask it to find places, make calls, read messages, etc.

      @@kallimathp1 I see. If I understand your problem, then there should be an easier solution to direct Spotify output to AUX. Normally, all audio output from your phone goes to AUX and Spotify as an app should follow that too. If it doesn't, you can disconnect/forget your phone's connection to the original Lexus bluetooth and Spotify will have no other audio output but AUX.
      On a related note--iOS has options to switch between different audio outputs for phone calls (Settings under Accessibility -> Touch -> Call Audio Routing) and I suspect Spotify uses something similar. I don't use it but you can look into related options/settings too.

Everything seems to work fine except when I'm navigating in the CarPlay interface using the Lexus joystick, it also interacts with my original Lexus interface. For example, if I moved the joystick around in the CarPlay module interface, and make selections, it also interacts with whatever is being controlled on the Lexus interface. This is extremely annoying as it would unknowingly change settings in the Lexus interface. I tried changing the DIP switch settings, reconnecting all cables and nothing seems to work. If DIP switches are all correct for your model/configuration, I suspect it might be something to do with the CAN cable/connections. Make sure they are chained together.
      My theory is that while the Carplay module "thinks" it is in the carplay mode, somehow the original Lexus unit still receives commands on its UI.

    It is good enough if you are using Siri to do most things, but using the remote is no fun. Sometimes getting it in precise location is a challenge while driving. Which mean taking your eyes off the road.
    Also, one of the biggest issues I found is that this system overlays CarPlay on top of the OEM software which is fine. But the biggest problem is that when the remote is moved and clicked, it’s also interacting with OEM screen in the background while showing CarPlay screen. So, the haptic feedback you feel in the remote is actually from OEM software. The clicks are as well which tends to switch back to oem screen for a bit. Like when accidentally clicking on Pandora. Others encountered issues such as engine noise because of the ground wire connection, which can be fixed. Feel free to check out my 4-month review video: czcams.com/video/yaBkp1MbwIU/video.html

    Thank you Professor's Garage. I just installed it to my Lexus RX350. it works well except the joystick. when I tried to move left, sometimes it moves right. Does anyone have similar issue?

    • @ZiYang-fh5ub
      @ZiYang-fh5ub Před rokem

      I see the actual issue. It’s interacting with the original Lexus system. Not sure if anyone has a solution yet.

      There are some settings related to joystick (e.g. left/right vs. up/down): czcams.com/video/yaBkp1MbwIU/video.html
      I didn't encountered the issue with interfering the original Lexus infotainment but have seen other people reporting that. It might be a faulty unit or due to incorrect DIP settings? Contact the seller support to see if they have a solution.

    I was wondering if anyone else has the issue of Bluetooth skipping two songs instead of one? It was fine the first day but after that it always skips two songs in a row (i noticed this is not a problem when connected to CarPlay Audio but I prefer Bluetooth audio because it sounds way better than the CarPlay one)

    • @profsg
      @profsg  Před rokem

      Sounds like some interference of the two connections, bluetooth vs. carplay. Perhaps both attempt to play the next? Try disabling one at a time and test whether each works individually. Also check Carplay system/OS settings to see if there is any audio/play-related option.

      Two options perhaps you can review in Systems: One is "Using Car's BT Phone"; mine is turned off. The other is Wifi Channel, which is unlikely related.

      @mangoesgonewild Před rokem +1

      @@profsg I will try that tomorrow. I turned ON “Using Car’s BT Phone” because I thought that meant it would default to Bluetooth audio always but I will turn it off again. My wifi channel is on 36, by default. Thank you!
      I noticed when connected to CarPlay audio, the songs won’t skip two, it’ll skip normally. When connected to Bluetooth audio, it’ll skip two songs going forward or back.

      I was able to fix it by switching from “No swap” to “swap” 😁
      Thanks again for the great video!

    I’m guessing you had an Android. If I have an IPhone, I assume I would need the usb cable you tucked away?

    • @profsg
      @profsg  Před rokem

      Either way, bluetooth or USB, works for iPhone. If you use USB, that will charge your phone while in the carplay mode so it's good to have the USB option available. You can check out my follow-up review video here:

    Jesus Christ the process is horrible! you miss a screw or a piece. you are literally screwed

    • @profsg
      @profsg  Před rokem

      The process does require patience. I did lose a screw and had to replace it. Not the end of the world though. Find a time when you can do it slowly and don't have to worry about putting everything back together in an hour. :) Good luck!
