Thanks very much for your tutorial. It was very helpful to me. But I just want to point out one thing: You said that, if there's a big pool of oil under the washer, then this video won't help. Because that would suggest that there is a bigger leak, maybe from the crankcase gasket, so fixing that is a much bigger job, requiring removal of the entire transmission, etc.. However, in my case, I did have a rather large pool of oil under my washer, simply because I let it go for a long time before I got around to troubleshooting and fixing it. But all of that oil did in fact leak out of the worn out seal, near the motor coupler, which you show how to replace in this video. I managed to refill it with new oil by simply injecting oil VERY SLOWLY through that opening, before installing the new seal ring. And now it works like a dream. So it's worth noting that, at least in some cases, a big puddle of oil can result from just this bad seal. And this video does show you all you need to know to fix it. You just need to also replace all the oil that's leaked out. But that can be done without taking anything else apart. You just need to inject the oil slowly through the opening, before replacing the old seal.
Very well put! I actually have refilled these transmissions using the hole that the seal covers (as you mentioned) a couple times. In this particular case, there was just a small leak, but yes refilling the transmission is important, especially if the leak has been going on for a while.
@@DuctTapeMechanic thanks for taking the time to make this video. I had a small amount of leakage on the ground, enough to see a large splotch and could see gear oil on the coupler and the seal. I basically did the easier way of just slowly "topping off" oil instead of taking out the entire transmission, breaking the seal, draining the oil, cleaning, pouring in all new oil, and resealing. It is a lot less work this way. I think mine was leaking slowly there for a while, but I found it when my timer motor failed to advance and it was left spinning for a long time! Thanks again...

I bought a new Speed Queen years ago and noticed a little bit of oil on the floor shortly, a couple months, after I bought it. Stupidly I let it go and after it was just out of warranty started making weird noises. (3 years 3 months). Luckily SQ was cool about it and had it replaced under warranty. They stripped that washer down to parade rest! It was a BIG job. The way I noticed it was I had to change the belt because it was slipping. The old one was oil soaked. Usually out of balance is hard on washers and will beat the seals and parts.
What did the oil smell like? How thick was it?
@@jeromedavis8575 It was golden colored, maybe as thick as heavy motor oil or gear oil. It didn't have a particular 'gear oil' Sulphur smell, it was more like regular oil. There was only a few drops at first, then maybe a tablespoon.
What was the viscosity? Did it have a smell similar to the one in a whirlpool direct drive or a GE filter-flo? What about Maytag? I noticed their oil smells strong.@@vincemajestyk9497
Wouldn't be easier if you take that front plate ? Its only 2 screws . If you scratch the shaft with screwdriver the seal will go bad fast . Also since you don't know how much oil is in the transmission its a good idea to take the transmission out and check

Mate good stuff...quick question..recently changed motor coupling......a tiny bit of oil dripped out ,(maybe 1/2 teaspoon max) as machiene was on its side for a while...not much....how much oil is in these things? Cheers appreciate yr clear vids.
That's is nothing to worry about. If you leave it on its side, oil will come out the the weep hole on top of the transmission. There is probably a half quart (perhaps a bit less) of oil in them. A couple drops of oil is of no concern, it happens often when working on them.
Do you by any chance have anyone who posted a video showing us removing the trans and re sealing it with rtv? Or maybe you have one?
Sometimes you could smell the oil....If the oil is very black could i change it what type of oil is best pump oil? That RT seal does it leak after a while? Is there any other way to change the oil other than opening those nuts hoping the gears inside don't fall off and hard to replace..tks for the video the transmission cost a lot.....IEdit-- now read the comments lol

OMG I have the exact same washer machine to and will there be any oil added to the transmission or will the transmission come prefilled with oil?
It comes prefilled, if you notice alot of leakage you can put some gear oil in (after removing the old seal you will see holes) before installing the new seal

How about a top load frigidaire that leaks motor oil IN the tub? No noise during operation...only did 2 loads...not using the machine now.
I have the same question. Recently my washer has had an odd smell (almost like sulfur) and it's coming from inside the machine. I've noticed that after the last 2 loads of laundry have finished washing there is black, smelly oil in the bottom inside of the tub. It looks like it's been slung around during the last spin cycle.
If I have to read lace the seal that means that the transmission lost oil. Is there a way to refill it with oil without opening the transmission box?
Yes. Remove the seal and fill the oil from the openings. There should be three or four small openings when you remove the seal, which are plenty wide enough to refill the transmission. This is how I typically do it. It is unfortunate that I forgot to mention that in the video. The oil I use is typically 80w 90 gear oil.
I tried finding a transmission seal for my GE washer model GTW460ASJ8WW and it seems like the seal is not available. It seems like they force you to buy the whole transmission. Am I missing something?
GE is notorious for making things not serviceable!
Won't the oil leak out once the seal is removed unless it's tilted a lot, but then the oil leaks out the weep hole on top I heard.
It won't leak out if you replace the seal with the washer on its back. This is also a good time to fill the transmission back up with some oil!
I mean if the seal is removed and not put back immediately. Say something happens and the new seal can't be installed immediately. Won't the oil leak out before the seal is replaced?
My kenmore 70 is leaking a little but nothing on the ground , also it doesn’t spin , so I’m going to replace the cupler
