A little tip for your Karcher. Before you switch it on, connect the hose and pull the trigger, let it flush through and fill up. This gets rid of the air locks in your hose so you never run the pump without water.

it says to do so on page 1 of the manual on every power washer I've ever seen, but I guess most guys don't read manuals anyways :-)

I also highly recommend the Nilfisk pressure washers, I've had mine for almost 6 years and it gets used almost every week, still as good as the day I bought it and great value for money. Not sure about the K2, but cheaper Karcher units often have (had?) plastic pumps. All the Nilfisk units are metal pumps as far as I know.

    • @Captainrave
      @Captainrave Před 2 lety

I’d second this. I’ve had my Nilfisk for 6 years, have cleaned the car weekly and the whole drive. All nilfisk units have metal parts and are far cheaper. My neighbours karcher was double the price and broke during their drive clean.

I am not sure why anyone would down vote this video?! This is good, practical information for those that do not have a small fortune to invest in detailing products.
I think this point is all the more applicable to the weekend warrior detailer who just wants to take care of their old or new car. There is zero need to spend £350 on a Rupes Bigfoot and another £100+ on assorted machine pads, which usually run from £8 - £15 EACH, if you only want to wash your car once or twice a month and maybe attempt a machine polish once per year.
Thanks Jon for the great video!

I noticed that the Bilt Hamber Atom Mac didn't get a mention, I guess John must have forgotten it, Its really good stuff, just spray it on to the brake discs before rinsing and washing wheels and after the final rinse then spray on some more. It helps reduce the water rusting on your brake discs and less rusty brake dust on your wheels when you drive your car.

I'd be surprised if some brand tops Bilt Hamber in the near future (except for protection stage, I would have recommended Collinite 476s for it's longer durability with around the same price). Because usually if someone sees a business opportunity, they just try to make money out of it, rather than being the new best in the trade. And making money out of it could mean watered-down products or some other ways to save in the making of the product. Like "Yeah, here's our new cheaper ceramic coating, it sure is technically a ceramic coating, and those are super, right? Let's not talk about durability tests, this is the newest and cheapest on the trade!" Surely exceptions are more than welcome. But with SiO2 -stuff I can see some competition coming in the future, Turtle Wax and Meguiars are already catching up on that area, started by smaller and more enthusiast-oriented brands.

Excellent low-down, John. Many thanks! Not sure if you mentioned anything for windows and mirrors? I'd highly recommend Stoner's _Invisible Glass_ . Absolutely, amazing stuff! You get a huge 19oz (539g) bottle of aoerosol, which lasts ages. So don't let the £12.00 price tag put you off. This stuff blows all the others out of the water, for results and ease of use. Spray on, wipe and buff off, and leaves not the trace of a smear or streak. I've used it on car windows, chrome, wing mirrors, and the windows of my home. It really is so good it looks like there's no glass there!

    Hi Jon.
I am 52 years old, and I only discovered the car detail about 1 and a half years ago, after buying an Audi A4 1.8T from 2003. I have already bought a pressure washer, some products and accessories, etc ...
The question I ask is the following, is it possible for someone like me or someone else, to be able to do car detailing just by watching videos on CZcams, like yours, or will it always be necessary to have professional training. For one of my fears is, for example, damaging the painting with a polisher. Thank you.
By the way, I really like your videos and your friendliness, good disposition and honesty in testing the products, accessories and techniques you show in the videos. One last question, when and how you started to work on automotive detail?
Keep up the great work and good videos.

As a relative newbie, this channel's been a massive help to me, but my detailing shelf is now bowing under the weight of chemicals from all over - some reviewed by John, some discovered via Paul Dolden, some from Tranquility Base Detailing and some I've just decided to try myself. I spent some time looking at different trim restoration ideas. Saw baby oil/mineral oil mix, boiled linseed oil, the expensive tiny bottles, the halfords type stuff etc etc. I've used a few and ALWAYS end up after a month with faded washed out trim.
So, maybe you could do a long term test of those types of products along with cheapo solutions like baby oil. upvote if you'd like to see FDC have a go at this.

we are doing this. I am writing an article for next issue of PVD on improved trim dressing and we are doing a proper mega test on all other trim restorations on faded trim to see which ones look the best on application (we have special metering equipment to measure it) and also which ones last the longest. The bad news is it will take 3 of us a few days to do the testing and hundreds of pounds spent on products and testing etc.. so you have to buy the magazine to read the artcile. Hardly that bad though is it

Almost the same shopping list I used a few months ago to fix up my car except I went for the china version of the flex 3401 which I got for 150 pounds, but nice list of getting started things there and I can vouch for the BH products they are surely solid in performance and easy to use even for a noob.

    Blimey John, another brrrrrrrilliant video!
I ordered some snowfoam about three days before I discovered your CZcams channel, it's Bilt Hamber auto-foam! YAY, I got something correct all by myself for once! I also already had and use the Auto Glym super resin polish, it's very good but as you say doesn't get rid of swirls but makes them look a lot better.
I'd like to have my paint cut and polished to sort the swirls out but am nervous about doing it myself though I feel like spending what I would pay a detailer to do it on the equipment and learning to do it myself would be a good investment. Should I maybe buy an old bonnet from a scrap yard to practice on?
Also do you have a video that compares tools or can you recommend which I should buy to measure the paint and clear coat thickness please as I hear this is something that should be done before attempting to cut or polish?
Keep up the great work John and thank you from all us out here in Corona virus lockdown-land!

hey steve ive done a video on PDG called must have or nice to have. paint depth gauge. you dont really need one mate. I would say rather than get a scrap panel. just do your first full detail (wash decon polish protect) on an old beater than has no value. like a family members car.. something not valuable and something hammered and use this car to apply all the processes to. cheers mate.

what a great vid, Jon👌...we all like to go premium, which is not always best...AND of course 'we' know best, which often puts off the new detailer from asking where do I start, especially on a budget....so well done son👍...my 2 pennies worth, I'd add Sonax BSD, on its own or diluted 50/50 with water

I'm a fan of meguiars hybrid ceramic wax. Any other type of wax is from the past. I use it when i dry the car every 6 monthes, I guess it will last for around 10 usages.
Used it on Black and silver cars i'm amazed how the silver car was so shiny!

On pressure washers i picked up a basic karcher k5 from toolstation for 199 ! Its not the total control one but i wanted a aftermarket short gun anyway. It replaced a brand new K2 and the k5 feels twice the power and much thicker foam in a cannon

Great great video. Shorter video with same amount of information (compare to your every other video). Talk bit faster but still understandable. And most important, spend more time for product on hand. I know you couldn't hold to explain every detail. But this is very fine. One of the best of you. You doin great with the new concept (I guess) !
