    You got it right. The use of auto tune was a throwback to honor the original use by Cher.

    Believe by Cher is credited as the first song released to use autotune, so they probably wanted to pay homage to that by still using a vocoder even though they are known for just using their voices! :)

    • @heidi_d
      @heidi_d Před 2 lety +25

      To specify, Cher was the first to use autotune in a song - for effect. Yeah, it was a total homage! 😍

    They don't usually use autotune!! They're using it here because the rise of autotune in the 90s was such a big thing, honestly I love it and think it adds to the effect of the medley!

    • @Lina_unchained
      @Lina_unchained Před 2 lety +2

      It's also very specific as a tribute to believe by Cher because it was the first song ever credited to use auto-tune in that particular way as a vocal effect rather than a pitch corrector

    BTW, if you like Todrick Hall, he collabbed with them to do “The Wizard of Aaahs” - it’s The Wizard of Oz told in a pop song montage and is FANTASTIC in almost every possible way music and video can be.

    They have started to experiment with different sounds including effects on their vocals. This is apparent in their latest album of originals The Lucky Ones. I think you would find that their sound is constantly evolving, but the main focus is always the vocals. This was a fun reaction and it warms my heart to see you listening to PTX again.

    • @Lina_unchained
      @Lina_unchained Před 2 lety +1

      The reason that they did it here is that believe by Cher was the first song ever credited to use Auto Tune in this Way. It's so amazing the way that they pay tributes to artists even while keeping their own spin on it.

    They are branching out. They have now released separate songs with not only Kevins cello, but a piano and guitar. I was able to attend the last concert of the Evergreen Tour last month & Scott said, “We are using a few instruments. Progress, I know!” Their Deluxe The Lucky Ones album is full of creativity & barrier pushing, using recorded vocals that are layered. I think as they move into their second decade together & have a solid fan base they are confident to try things. Kevin is now a Dad & Matt just got married. My how time flies!

    I was so happy to see you reacting to Pentatonix again. Thank you. Their 90s video makes me happy. The auto tune was an homage to the original artists using it in the 90s. Cher was the Queen. Please react to Pentatonix "Over The River" with Lindsey Stirling. Pentatonix had a Christmas tour in 2021. There are a lot of fan-shot live videos from the tour.

    You are so right in that they don't usually use too much vocal enhancements, but they always do something in each song that is a "nod" or "homage" to the original hit song. I think it's great that they do this and it's a kind of respect to the original. They are THE A CAPPELLA masters. They have reintroduced a cappella singing and taken it to a whole new level. They keep growing and evolving in their craft. They are truly God blessed.

    They did a tour this holiday season!! First tour since the whole Covid mess began!! Also on this last Christmas album there r a few songs Kevin does get 2 sing on! There is a piece with guitar and a piece with Kevin on cello and Lindsay Sterling on violin.. On 2020 Xmas album Scott n his partner wrote a song and Scott plays piano and Kevin plays cello for it! So they dabble with instruments a little! 😉

    One of the best reactions to this video ever! It is fun watching reactors who know all these songs have flashbacks to the clubs. Somebody made a video where they play PTX's version onscreen next to the original and it's fun to watch - Pentatonix 90s Dance Medley Side by Side. I believe they intentionally played up the autotune on Cher's song, since she was one of the first big artists to use it. Looking forward to more reactions. A recent one you might like is PTX My Favorite Things - it's very strange.

  • @Sweeney541
    @Sweeney541 Před 2 lety +15

    They were using autotone as a stylistic choice for the Cher song as that was the first song to do that.
    But they have also been doing more production on their music recently - listen to the tracs on the deluxe version of their recent original album The Lucky Ones. I recommend Petals, Easy Love, Anchor and Midnight in Tokyo.

    Evergreen has a guitar. Thank You has Scott on piano. Say Something has Kevin on cello. So they will add instruments when they feel right about it.
    Also the auto tune was a nod to Cher, who had explicit auto tune on that song (Life After Love). She may have been the first to have autotune as a vocal effect.

    PTX just did a mini tour in Nov and Dec, ending in Texas so they were home for the Holidays. Matt just got married and Kevin and his wife had their first child in April 2021. Kevin had the Best Father's Day in 2021. They are indeed human and if a mistake is made, someone else will cover it in concert or they do another take. Penta=5 for 5 members and based on the Pentatonic Scale.
    They post on Social Media and even did a few TikTok videos for fans to sing along. Careful how far you dive into this rabbit hole. There are even a couple of PentaCon's [conference with their parents. 2016 had a video message from Avi's Mom. The 2018 conference included Matt's Mom, Dad and sister as well as Kevin's Mom, Dad and sister. Scott's parents, Mitch's parents and Kirstin's Mom.

    When I first heard this medley, I was flabbergasted that I didn't know many of the songs AT ALL. In the 90s I was a young mother. I had two children during this time, and listening to music got me through some of the hard times of being 24/7 responsible for little humans. I knew almost every song in Todrick Hall's 4 the 90s medley, but not these. I finally figured out that many of these songs were more club songs. You would know them if you were going to clubs or partying in Vegas, etc. Not the case for a young mom! Now I've seen this so many times that I now know them - I've gone back and listened to them and can appreciate both the originals and the PTX interpretation. As for autotune, PTX was clearly paying homage to the autotune from the originals, especially Cher's. It's done for effect, not because they "need" it. I loved your reaction!

    There's so much of their music that you've not seen yet. If you want medleys check out: Home (from their Home EP), Wizard of Aahs! (with Todrick Hall), and the 3 remaining Evolution of ..., which are Music, Beyonce, & Michael Jackson. There's also more Superfruit medleys like Hip Hop Goes Broadway 1 & 2 (always watch after the credits, Frozen Medley, they've also done Beyonce, Rihanna, Arianna, and Taylor Swift evolutions/medleys.
    A genius mash up of theirs that I love is New Rules x Are You that Somebody. And someone else in the comments mentioned the BTS mashup Butter x Dynamite.
    It'd also be cool to see you react to more original stuff. I highly recommend recommend Popspring 2016, where they perform 3 originals (Cracked, Can't Sleep Love, and Water) and the Evolution of Michael Jackson. And since you love harmonies...Run To You.

    I hate that nobody told you about the concert that they did. They streamed one of their Christmas tour shows online. It was $10 a ticket and it was the Christmas tour they just wrapped. Scott played the piano twice: one song that he cowrote with his bf mark called "Thank you" and one song that they collaborated with Lindsey Sterling again on called over the river. was epic. Also, Kevin and Matt did a performance together where Kevin was playing the cello and Matt was playing a drum. I'm sending you a DM on IG so you can see a couple of really awesome things.

    Talking about loving harmonies? Perhaps it sounds funny, but as a kid of about 5 or 6 years old I was watching the movie Charlotte's Web there was a part in the movie where the Zuckerman family went to the county fair and a Barbershop Quartet began to sing a song about Wilbur. Those harmonies where like a revelation to me right at that moment. Pentatonix enraptured me in exactly the same way as soon as I heard their harmonies. I really enjoyed your reaction here! Well done Steven!

    I was born 1982, but growing up, my dad blocked MTV and VH1 and unless it was 70's rock or country music ( no one in my family liked country but me) we probably hadn't heard the song unless at a school dance, roller rink, etc. We didn't have a computer until I was 17 so couldn't even search for music that way. These songs don't really bring back any nostalgia for me but I d know the songs now and I actually like listening to this

    I'm OK with the Autotune too, in this instance. If they hadn't added it, we would have missed it. And even though they occasionally add effects like this, I bet they very rarely have to correct someone's pitch being just a hair off. I've seen enough videos of their live performances, and they all have astonishingly precise pitch.
    Now I'm wanting them to do an '80s Dance Medley, with Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, Whitney, Cindi Lauper, Dead or Alive (You Spin Me Round), Duran Duran, Culture Club, Communards, etc. Of course, nobody of this group had been born yet, but that decade was the big one for me. OK, maybe it's not all about me.

    Lovely reaction. Actually, autotune was used only once. Mitch actually did effect during Blue himself. He's an amazing mimic. But as everyone else has said, autotune was used on Believe because it's so iconic. This is one of my guaranteed pick-me-ups - you are so right about how happy they look. They work so hard, it's a gas to see them just having fun. Matt, the bass, is a naturally cheery person, so he was off the wall here. And Scott with the swag, yeah - he loves playing the idol. Mitch is a little more subtle, but here he looks like a cat who got the cream. I can't believe how Kevin can smile while he beatboxes, but you see it in his eyes. And Kirstin knocked it out of the park: she looked and sounded absolutely beautiful. And they do touch their fans - they are always so human. Have you watched the Making of Evergreen Behind the Scenes video? I think you would enjoy seeing them just being themselves and working together.

    As others have said, you probably need to check out the The Lucky Ones Deluxe additions... all of The Lucky Ones was fairly experimental, but the deluxe songs were even more so. Matt learned a whole new way to do bass effects for it, they used a lot of layering and some studio effects and they're the first songs that not only have a number of instruments, they're instruments not played by band members. Completely stepped out of the box.

    I just spent the last couple of hours watching your PTX reactions. I'm a newbie, only been listening to them for the last 6 weeks or so but I'm obsessed!! Got tickets to see them in London UK next May. I love everything they do, so talented and so clever.
    Can I ask you to react to 'Run To You'. Its beautiful. Love your reactions, just like mine lol.

    We could’ve been neighbors, who knows? I grew up in Houston too. I LOVE ALL THESE SONGS. I actually made a list and downloaded all these songs to relive my childhood. ☺️

    I watched a trio consisting of a young lady and her two brothers named A Girl Named Tom, they won The Voice this year and their harmonies are outstanding. I absolutely love harmony also and in my opinion they are second to PTX on my playlist. Have you reacted to Thank You which is an original written by Scott and his partner. It's a Christmas song but besides being beautiful Scott plays the piano and Kevin plays his cello on it. It's so good seeing you get so excited about Pentatonix again Steve. Great reaction!

    their newest, the prayer, is maybe their best. i think harmonies give us a hit of dopamine.

    I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction! You are very entertaining to watch. I have only found Pentatonix about 4 months ago, so I’ve been watching a lot of reactions to their music. You seem like a very likable young man. Goes a long way. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Tennessee 🤗🇺🇸♥️

    I’ve missed you reacting to PTX and I’m so glad this particular video is what brought you back. PTX has been absolutely killing it over the last two years, even through the pandemic and they’ve released so much music in 2020 and 2021. Hope you get to react to the videos from their At Home EP and the whole The Lucky Ones album (which is amazing). Their last two Christmas albums have been my favorite that they’ve released so far. They’re amazing, I love them so much 😍😍

    I didn’t see Evolution of Michael Jackson or of Beyoncé in your playlist…those are fantastic!

  • @SweetSlytherinGirl-Jennifer

    If you want happy, you should see their mashup cover of BTS's Butter x Dynamite. Even Mitch looked really relaxed and like he was having a great time!
    Loved this reaction! I was a teen in the 90s, so I heard these songs at every dance, every party, always playing on the radio. Such great memories to be relived through music!

    Loved, loved your reaction. You had me chuckling just enjoying your excitement. Thanks!! Watch some of their current stuff. They use piano, cello, guitar and violin. Kevin sings more too. Suggest their song that Scott wrote 'Thank You'

    I really think you would love their new original album The Lucky Ones bc they do a lot of experimentation. I’d love to hear you react to that album it was so good and fresh for them

    You are such a kick to watch in this reaction. I'm guessing you are a blast to hang out with. As for them expanding to something other than what they have been doing . . . I think they have taken Acapella further than anyone ever thought it would go. It's sorta their niche.
