  • That's right, this is my very first experience with Pentatonix. I guess they are popular but I only know of them because of some requests in my comment section. They are uber talented so special shout out to ALL of them (past and present members). I had so much fun here and loved every minute of this. I threw in various clips of the original artists to pay them some respect... I put in a lot of effort for this video and really hope you enjoy it 💪
If you haven't see any of my previous reactions here on CZcams then I'd like to welcome you to DannymikReacts. I react to all genres of music and am now branching out to the beatbox genre and short comedy skits. So please, kick back and relax... I hope you enjoy!!

If PTX uses an instrument, you will see it in the video. They do occasionally use a cello or a piano, or collaborate with somebody using an instrument. In this particular song they also used auto tune, however used it as an homage to Cher, “the Cher effect’.

The best reaction video I have seen, EVER. You took the time to show the original songs........ Great. Welcome to the world of Pentatonix (PTX). They are an a Capella group formed in 2011 to compete on "The Sing Off" show on NBC. They did win and received 200K and a record deal. They all moved from their respective homes to LA and were promptly dropped by the record label. They turned to You Tube to get their music out to the public and the rest is history. They were soon signed to a new record deal and have since won 3 Grammy"s and have sold millions of records. They are known for their many tours and especially for their Christmas Albums. The three main singers are called the "Trio". Scott (the blond), Mitch (high voice), and Kirstie ( woman) grew up together in Texas. They were Choir "Nerds" and became a local sensation with their singing at school and Community Theater. After High School, Scott went to USC and became involved in the local a Capella scene. He got the "Trio" back together in order to be on "The Sing Off". They needed two more singers and recruited Kevin (Beat Boxer) and Avi (Bass). Avi has since (2017) went solo and Matt is the current Bass. PTX has redefined what a Capella groups can do. Mostly with their unique "Arrangements". Scott's friend from USC, Ben Bram is their main partner in their arrangements. Anything you choose to react to from PTX will blow your mind. They do great "one take" medleys and also do original songs too. Thanks again for your efforts. VERY enjoyable video.

Since you said you like EDM and such, try their Daft Punk Medley (they won a Grammy for it), and their original Love Again. There is a different bass singer in these two videos. They've had only one member change in their 10 year history. Avi, their original bass singer and was replaced by Matt (the guy in the red suit jacket and blue checkered jacket in this video) at the end of 2017.

Welcome to PTX! Of all acapella groups, I'd say Pentatonix are the kings and queen of vocal EDM, so there is more like this, if you're interested, in their giant catalog of covers and originals. You should probably check out their "Daft Punk" medley, which won them their first of three Grammys, their original song "Love Again," is a must, and I'd also suggest their cover of Kiiara's "Gold" and their mashup of "New Rules x Are You That Somebody." There are just five members, though the bass in this one, Matt, replaced an earlier member, Avi. Three of them sang together in high school, Kirstin, Scott, and Mitch, and they hooked up with Kevin (tenor, beatboxer, and cellist when they occasionally employ instrrumentals) and Avi right before the Sing Off audition for season 3, eleven years ago, which they won. Since then, they have become multiplatinum artists filling stadiums all over the world. They have billions (with a B) views on CZcams, (check out an early viral hit "Somebody That I Used to Know" cover) and have also each explored some solo and duo projects. Of particular interest to you as a Dance music fan, might be Mitch and Scott's side project "Superfruit" because their EP "Future Friends" is very dance-vibey, (See "Guy.exe" and "How You Feeling") and also, Mitch's solo project under the name, "Messer" is a unique EDM experience. Check out his EP "Roses" and a single he did with Jimmy Edgar, "Ready2Die." You liked Kirstin's vocals, and her solo EP "Love" is great! I'd suggest "Bad Weather," "Naked," and "All Night." lastly, Pentatonix have a special affinity for Christmas, with at least 5 Christmas albums, Christmas specials, holiday concert tours including original Christmas songs and top notch collaborations, so even if you didn't know it, you've probably heard them on the holidays when just going about your business. Great and well put together reaction! Subbed for more!

They are indeed doing that without any instruments! Their names are Scott (blond guy, baritone), Mitch (first guy in this video, a tenor), Kirstin (the girl, mezzo-soprano), Matt (bass) and Kevin (he's the beatboxer, does all the vocal percussion). These guys are absolutely unbelievable. If you watch any of their videos before around 2017, you'll find they had a different bass, Avi, who was absolutely amazing as well. He left on good terms and helped find Matt, who replaced him.
My favorites I think you should definitely react to are "Hallelujah" (2016) "Bohemian Rhapsody" (2017), "Imagine" (2017), "The Sound of Silence" (2019) "Daft Punk" (older one, 2013 and they won a Grammy for it) and "Amazing Grace" (2020).

welcome to the wonderful world of pentatonix. First a brief history. they won the show sing off i believe in 2011. also the original members included mitch, kirsten, scott, kevin(beat boxer) and avi (bass)...avil left after a few yrs to take care of his ailing grandma and couldn't tour as much so avi helped pentatonix find their current bass (matt). They are 98% acapella but they do have some videos with kevin who also plays the cello. They've won 3 grammys for their covers of daft punk, dance of the sugar plum fairies, jolene w/ dolly parton. Other covers are bohemian rhapsody(quite simply the best cover of that classic rock song), wizard of ahhhs (a montage of 16 songs made to tell the story of the wizard of oz), mad world, royals, hallelujah, sounds of silence, radioactive, imagine, god rest ye merry gentlemen, little drummer boy, gold, problem, say something, attention, cant hold us....there are so many great covers...too many to list..but this is a start. They also do originals...some include...sing, love again, and their new album "the lucky ones". also they made an album during the pandemic recorded entirely in their own homes...recorded seperately thru zoom and mixed..songs include home, blinding lights, break my heart, dreams, when the party's over. Please do more pentatonix reactions. thanks and be safe in these troubled times.

Welcome to the world of Pentatonix, or PTX for short. Get ready for a quick boost to your channel from their rabid fans who call ourselves “Pentaholics”. Here is my quick intro to the group for new fans.
PTX is a five member “a Capella” (without instruments) vocal band formed in 2011 for the NBC television reality competition show “The Sing Off”. The original members are “the trio”, who went to high school together in Arlington, Texas made up of:
SCOTT HOYING, male, 6’3”, usually blond, sings baritone, but has a wide vocal range and covers the bass line of songs when the normal bass is singing a lead.
MITCH GRASSI, male, 5’10”, normally black hair but has changed body mass, wardrobe and hair style so much in videos he’s often mistaken for different people. Mitch has an amazingly high range (contra tenor) that some mistake for a second female voice.
KIRSTIN MALDONADO, female, 5’4”, natural hair color is black but changes it often in videos. Kirsti (rhymes with “thirsty”) sings mezzo soprano and, for a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
Added to “the trio” for the show were:
AVI KAPLAN, male, 5’11”, long dark hair, beard, usually wears a knit hat of some kind. Avi is a classically trained “basso profundo”. He provides the vocal bass line as well as added vocal percussion but often uses his upper registry to sing vocal leads in a number of arrangements. Avi is the ONLY member of the band that has change. He left on good terms in 2017 for reasons related to conflicting demands of the band’s touring schedule and his personal/family commitments. He assisted the group in finding his replacement Matt Sallee.
KEVIN OLUSOLA male, 6’1”, black, changing hair style, is known as “KO” and was asked to join PTX to provide vocal percussion after Scott watched a CZcams video of him “cello boxing” (beatboxing while playing his cello). KO is the classic over achiever of the group. He plays Cello, Piano, and Saxophone all at concert levels. He graduated pre-med from Yale, speaks Spanish and spent over a year in China where he became fluent in Chinese. He sings Tenor but vocals were not his strong suite when he started so he worked with other band members and a vocal coach until while on tour he would perform the featured vocals in "if I ever fall in love", (originally performed by guest artist Jason Derulo for the album and video). He also writes and produces music both individually and for the group. So, KO is more than “just the beatboxer”.
The most recent member and the only change in the group’s membership is:
MATT SALLEE, male, 5’9” black with usually close-cut black hair. Matt replaced Avi Kaplan in 2017 to provide vocals, vocal bass and percussion. Matt can be heard using his exceptional upper vocal range to provide a rich tenor/baritone lead often ending with a slide down to a deep bass punch.
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. The only exception is they may deliberately use Auto-Tune when they cover songs where it was used in the original and is key to the sound of that song. An example is "90's Dance Medley" when they use it in Cher’s, “Believe”.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen.
    Enjoy the ride.

Just wanted to add onto this amazing comment. In their cover of bohemian rhapsody, Mitch is seen holding a megaphone during the video for the guitar solo, this is just a prop and he can recreate that sound completely off mic. Amazing talent (also amazingly in-depth comment) 🖤

Great reaction, and you REALLY know your stuff !! Normally, they don't record any videos that they can't do live for their concerts/world tours...however, in this video, Kirstie when doing the Cher song, autotune was used, but only because they were paying homage to the first time autotune was done on her song...GENIUS !!
Others to start with would be....Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody; Daft Punk; Sound of Silence...others will be recommended hordes of other videos. P.S. This band has been together for 10 years, but the Bass (Avi) left after 6+ years and recommended his replacement (Matt). Enjoy this journey down the rabbit hole !!

I'm a purist. I don't like the autotune, the cello, or the piano. I'm not dissing how Kevin or Scott play; I would just prefer to avoid those things. But I think it makes sense for Kevin to play the cello during concerts to give the others a chance to rest their voices.

As a rule, they don't do anything they can't perform live, choosing to post produce their songs as little as possible. That's why they sound just as good live as they do in their official videos.
That said, they sometimes use effects like panning (like in their Bohemian Rhapsody cover), or in this one there was autotune, because Cher's Believe was the first song that used autotune as an effect. So basically, at times they add simple things to pay homage to the original. They do it sparsely and only if they feel the effects 'make' the song.
Please, check out their Daft Punk medley, you won't regret it (if you do react to this one, keep in mind that the audio is recorded in a closet and the video was shot in a kitchen of an apartment Kevin and Avi shared, with a $400 budget). It's amazing what they can do with five voices.

They only use the instruments that you see. Occasionally they use a cello or a piano.
I think you would enjoy their original song "Love Again".
If you want to hear Kirstin really go for it, watch "Hallelujah" and "Amazing Grace".
She takes the lead in their very unusual take on "My Favorite Things".

    • @Loruca
      @Loruca Před 3 lety

I agree their take on "My Favorite Things" is very unusual. Unlike Home Free, they don't do much in comedy that I know of, and so "My Favorite Things" is notable because of how they stage it. So much fun! Scott and Mitch do comedy in their Super Fruit channel. If you want to be impressed with more a capella and beyond amazing beat-boxing, have a look at Home Free, especially "Man of Constant Sorrow". Everything in that video is just them using their voices, although I believe they use a loop.

They do all of their own sounds, but there were a couple of songs here where there was a signature sound in the original song that they chose to include in their cover because it was so iconic, especially the autotune sound in Cher's song. They do lots of covers and have a few of their own original songs. They got their start on "The Sing Off". They have done several medleys.

The full names of each of the members as well as a brief summary of their roles/voices in each song.
Scott Hoying- Baritone, the tall blonde haired guy.
Scott has immense range, being able to sing the bass line when the bass singers (Matt Sallee or Avi Kaplan) have a solo, or sing high like Mitch and Kirstie as well as everything in between. He often looks like the main singer even though the group doesn't have an official main singer and they alternate the "leads" of the song based on who's voice best fits it.
Mitch Grassi- darker haired guy, (tenor)
Mitch's voice is that of an angel. Really not much more to say. Oh and the fact that he seems to change his appearance pretty drastically with every video.
Kirstin (or Kirstie) Maldonado- gorgeous woman with a gorgeous high soprano voice but also a fantastic lower register and vibrato. She also changes her appearance often.
Matt Sallee- bass. Matt has been with the group since 2017 following the departure of the original bassist Avi Kaplan, who left after having been with the group since their creation in 2011. Matt is an awesome bass voice and also has a tone that blends well with Scott's. He also is a natural entertainer and knows how to really get the crowd going at their live concerts.
Avi Kaplan- Bass. Avi was the original bass of the group and is not in this video as a result, as he left in 2017 as a result of the groups fast paced schedule eventually overwhelming him. He's able to hit notes so low you'd think there's no way he's a human being, but he is and his chocolatey, warm, velvety tone is just sooooo amazing and instantly recognizable.
    And last but not least......
    Kevin Olusola- Beatboxer/Cello player/Celloboxer/Tenor
Kevin is indisputably the most talented member of the group.
In addition to laying down killer beats as the vocal drum set of the group, he also is a concert trainer cello player, and on occasion he will even bring his cello (which he's named Beyoncé) into the songs and play it while beatboxing at the same time, a technique he's called "cello boxing" in addition to that he has a gorgeous tenor voice that he puts on display in a select handful of their song as well.
A few more things that showcase his insane talents outside of PTX.
He plays Saxophone and piano at concert levels.
He also graduated from Yale in Pre-Med and also can speak fluent Mandarin Chinese.

Kevin Olusola is the incredible Beat Boxer but he also has a n incredible singing voice and he plays the Cello. Then Matt is the Bass, he replaced Avi, who started the group , but he left I think in 2017. Then Mitch the dark hair beautiful high voice, then Scott the baritone tall blonde. Then last but not least Miss Kirsten she is an amazing singer also..

I absolutely loved how you showed the original music after each PTX version. That was refreshing. There is a video out there that did this first but it was not a reaction video. Hm....there is so much you could react to. First, know that the bass in this mix was Matt Sallie; he replace the original bass Avi Kaplan. Beatboxer is probably the most talented--Kevin Olusola. Check out 'Imagine' (John Lennon) 'Hallelujah' (Cohen)(live version is fabulous too), 'Amazing Grace', 'Gold' (Kiara), Evolution of 'Michael Jackson/Arianna Grande/Beyonce/Music' (that is 4 different videos there), 'Sound of Slience' (Garfunkle), 'Mad World', 'Dance of the Sugar Plum Faries', 'Daft Punk Medley' and so many more. Two of the group formed Superfruit--check out their version of Hip Hop Goes Broadway I and II, 'Rise' (Katy Perry), 'Antimedley' (Rihanna), 'Feeling Myself' (Niki Minaj). Kevin the beatboxer is amazing in 'Down' (Marion Hill). Oh crap I forgot PTX in 'Bohemian Rhapsody' (Queen).

Yes all a cappella - they are the best a cappella group in the world, in my opinion. The talent show you mentioned was the Sing Off - an a cappella competition. They won the third series. They have three Grammys and just this week were awarded a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. They have been around since 2011. If you love EDM, their first Grammy winning song was their Daft Punk Medley. They do all the sound effects themselves - Kevin is one of the best beatboxers in the world. The video was made with $400 dollars with a ring light in one of their kitchen closets! Also, their original song 'Love Again' which is also EDM. They are known for their covers and Christmas music but their originals are incredible and much under-rated. They have only had one line up change in 2017, the bass singer (Matt in this one, who sings the Cher intro on this) replaced their original member Avi (amicably for personal reasons). Their version of Hallelujah has more than 700 million views. Pentaholics are very loyal so if you enjoy reacting to them you will pick up a lot of subscribers.

It feels good that most are enjoying the short clips of the original songs because that added a lot to the editing process. I felt some might not know (some of) the original songs and the comparison would be valuable. Thanks for the suggestions and your time with this reaction... appreciate the kind words as well. Hope you have a great weekend ✌🙌😎

Growing that fly hair was a side effect of having COVID 😂😂
People wonder how I have never heard of them outside of CZcams... we must live under a rock. I appreciate your warm words... I'm getting better week by week; it's a slowwwww process. Thank you ❤😊

Welcome to the wonderful world of PTX! I'm sure you will have people flood your page now and we all look forward to seeing you discover their extensive catalog. When watching reactions I love when the reactor is sad the song ends and beg for more! Makes me smile! New sub here and looking forward to seeing the birth of another "Pentaholic"!!! :-)

It's my way to show a little respect to the original artists and to have some fun with the editing. Most enjoyed it but there are a handful of Karen's who complained 😜
      Thank you for your interest!

If you are an EDM person then their “Daft Punk Medley” is definitely for you. That has Avi Kaplan (their original bass, left in 2017) in it instead of Matt Sallee their current bass. The other 4 members are still the same although Kirstie and Mitch change their looks dramatically over the last 10 years.
