The auto tune was a tribute to Cher. She was the first artist to use it (in this song) ☺️
The CHER EFFECT as it was called back then
A cover of Believe without the autotune just isn't right. Something would be missing
@@carrot708 i hate auto tune i wanted to see This medley without auto tune Will be dope
Cher sucks
Cher's Believe was the first commercial use of autotune effect, so they included it in here
The very first.
that's interesting!
@@saturnpicses Cher did not invent it. it was invented years before by a geologist to filter seismic data
Oh, so that's how it all started... Nowadays everyone and their cat uses it lol
@@pe8268 actually, for pitch correction melodyne is used more nowadays.
All people in their 30's and 40's:
"I haven't heard this song I in forever!" For every song.
lol
What do you think us people in our 40's are saying?!?! Lol! These were at my high school and college dances!
People in their 20's: My parents put these songs on when I was a kid!
@@SweetSlytherinGirl-Jennifer TRUTH!!
@@SweetSlytherinGirl-Jennifer to be fair I'm 39, so I didn't mean to exclude those I their 40's. I'm close!
You know you're getting older when the music seems like it was only a few years ago but was in fact a couple of decades old. It happens to us all. 😉
Hahaha
I am still in shock it's not 2010 😂
It's a little jarring, isn't it? I started to feel old when I caught myself referencing/explaining things that happened _multiple decades_ ago, or when someone (whos obviously an adult) that I enjoy watching online talks about being born in the 90's or early 2000's.
@@KyrieChii i feel you
im not even born in 90s. still idk i felt like i have experienced these songs before. they sound so nostalgic! prob past life haha?
This is probably the greatest mashup they’ve done and i’m not even a 90s kid lol
I think (I might be wrong) that "Believe" from Cher (the one where they are using a very obvious autotune) was actually the first song to use autotune. It was a specific artistic choice to create a distinct "sound" for that track: after that, autotune became "a thing" and it was everywhere, basically defining the beginning of the 2000s
Exactly! PTX probably used it as a tribute on Believe!
Not the first, but definitely the most popular. There’s a song from the 80s called Computer Love by Zapp. And why that may still not be the “first” it’s the first one that came to my mind.
I think she was definitly one of the firsts to use Autotune, in Believe to create a different sound quality, not just correct voices. See: 'Cher effect'.
It was the first really popular song to feature those hard Autotune "breaks". Other people had done it before by doing slides up and down. In Believe it is preprogrammed or added in post, that is basically the only way to really get the breaks on the beat.
When Scott Hoying was a freshman at USC he met composer/arranger Ben Bram. Ben had been an arranger on the first two seasons of the Sing-Off and suggested he get a group together. He did and aside from occasional songs arranged by the band, Bram has been the bands arranger ever since.
90s is so jam-packed with amazing music and creativity.
IMO, the 80-90s is the pinnacle of the entertainment industry (music, movie, literature, etc).
and the 2000 brings us a (kind of) new trends... but we gradually returns back to the past.
Congrats to Kevin and Leigh on new baby girl Kaia.
Fur sure !!!
Wrong decade. "Valley Girl" was the 1980s.😉
@@UserHorologium Was it? I always thought that was a 90's thing. Maybe it was tail-end of 89' or something.
@@KyrieChii No, I was in high school, and I graduated in 1986.
Valley girl was definitely a '90s thing as well. The movie Clueless came out in '95.
They do the arragements themselves along with Ben Bram.
They are all involved, but I believe Scott and Kevin (and Ben) often do most of it. (you'll also sometimes see Scotts name on the arrangements for the 2 other groups he co-founded: Citizen Queen and Acapop Kids).
The cool thing about that Cher song is that she had that same synthesized tone in the music. PTX replicated that. Same as when they did hi/lo sounds in Bohemian Rhapsody. Kind of cool that they play homage to certain effects in music of the past.
"Cher effect"!!!! she was first to do it, nice homage. This was fun!
I do remember that autotune effect on Cher's voice on that song. Thanks for the reaction! Awesome song! Awesome PTX!
Oh cool
I was an 70/80's kid so when all these songs came out at was at the local gay bar with my freinds, finally living my authentic self and was having SO MUCH FUN with these songs!
Cher's Believe was the first song that most people ever heard autotuned so this was an appropriate salute to that.
Soo good. The believe song by cher is a redemption from the singoff where they changed songs. You should watch the singoff season 3 and see their humble beginings.
Everytime we touch from Cascada is technically a cover. So they sang the og which came out in 92, but the cascada version. So I guess it counts lol
I thought the same exact thing when they started doing Everytime we touch by Cascada, and you are technically right, it wasn't a hit until 2006 for Cascada, but it was originally by Maggie Reilly in 1992. Cascada's was the cover version that blew up
Actually Yes! Cher was the first person to use the auto-tune effect on "Believe" so we can thank her for making TikTok singers think they are gonna be famous singers. Hahaha.
wow cool!!1
Speaking of the '90s, Scott's look was very reminiscent of Max Headroom.
So I did some research on Cascada's "everytime we touch", and it was released in the 2000's. However, that song borrows the chorus of Maggie Reilly's song of the same name. That version of "everytime we touch" was released in 1992. (it's more of a slower song, but Maggie's voice is beautiful)
I really enjoyed how you explain the musical aspect of what they do. Is not just bing amazed by them, which is valid too...... but thanks for that
The production value and editing has gotten soo good.
Totally
God, this was my late high-school/early college soundtrack lol. The 90's were a hell of a time.
Cascadas version of 'Every time we touch' came out in 2006. whereas the original came out in 1992.
Ahhhhh
But the original is not a dance song. Moreover, the only thing the 2 versions share is the refrain, and here Kirstin is definitely singing the lyrics from Cascada's version, which makes it be distinctly out of place.
But it's a good song, so I'll give it a pass
@@ALeafOnTheWind42 yeah I was telling my sister... This was never techinally a 90s dance song. But we let it off.
Yeah. I just Googled who wrote Everytime we touch. Cause when I would go to dance clubs in the 2000s I never heard this... I actually had first child before this came out. But I love Cascada as a band and I feel that Kirstin and Natalie Horler have same vibe it's beautiful
I love the seamless transitions from one song to the next. They do it so well. Yes the "auto tune" homage to Cher's "Believe" was really special and yes back in the 90's Cher introduced it and it was picked up by quite a few artists, mostly rapp, pop and R & B, as well as some other voice enhancement devices. The 90's was the electronic era. At any rate this medley was very well done and super fun. I want to hear them do a Disco medley.
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
"The 90's was the electronic era" Have you heard 80s music, that was electronic, nobody in the 80s used a single piece of real instrument. LOL It's funny cuz it's true
A couple of these songs are early-mid 2000s. Every Time We Touch was 2006.
Ben Bram is Pentatonix' frequent collaborator on arrangements, especially their complex medleys. He was co-winner with PTX on their first two Grammy Awards (for the arrangements of the Daft Punk Medley and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy). You should try to get an interview with him to talk about the craft of song arranging and specifically how they approached this latest project.
As for the Cher "Believe" segment, I think they re-created the effect as a homage to the original version which also deliberately made use of over-the-top auto-tune.
Cacada's version of "Everytime We Touch" was released in 2004, but it was based on a 90's song. ATC's All Around the World was technically out in 2000 but we'll let that one slide too. Blue just squeaked by in 1999.
I thought Everytime We Touch was 2000s too but that’s because Cascada’s version became popular in 2006 but the original by Maggie Reilly came out in 1992.
This was the reaction I was looking for. Thanks for actually analyzing/explaining their singing choices during the video rather than just saying it was cool.
Jason Restitudo I love the way you react You’re very informative You love PTX ❤️ Keep up the good work!
If you want to check out an early example of them singing instrumentation, take a look at La La Latch.
Loved your reaction.
It really was such a trip down memory lane
Mitch's voice is unreal. And Kevin there's nothing he can't do! He is amazing. Matt's voice is beautiful. This was so much fun
This song "belive" from Cher was the first big autotune song. She was the first to use it that way.
Matt and Kev doing their thing in this video. They sound unbelievably good! Two great talents!
for sure!
The funny thing about Auto Tune in Cher's song is actually that they used it wrong intentionally. The effect was originally created in 1997 in order to correct vocals and instruments that sounded off. But the producers of Cher's song discovered the robotic vocal sound by using Auto-tune at its highest setting.
Cher's "Believe" (1998) was the first hit song to use auto-tune. At least it was the first song to use it to intentionally make the singer's voice sound more robotic.
Re the comments on bass + kick drum, PTX has said that when they arrange a song, it starts with the beats, then the bass, then the backing harmonies, and the lead gets laid on top. ETA: I learn so much from your reactions.
So cool!!
You are the first person doing a reaction to this that picked up on Kirstin's auto-tune! Yayy! I kept thinking it was just me that heard that! And Matt's low bass note at the very end is something else!
They went absolutely CRAZY on this medley! It's so freaking good.
Again I appreciate your technical knowledge of the mix.
I always learn things from your reactions. It was fun watching this with you. Thanks.
This was sooo good. I'll be listening to this for hours. Great reaction!!
That was fast! 😄 I also grew up in the 90’s. It’s an amazing medley
Phenomenal!! an epic 90’s nostalgia overload from my teens and I loved every second. 🔥😍🙌
I absolutely enjoy the heck out of your content! Always love the insightful comments sprinkled throughout the reactions. Wish you all the best with your own music too!
Loved your reaction and the way you explain everything n.n
Fantastic Medley by Pentatonix as always! They are amazing! It was great to listen to your reactions, thank you! Keep them coming!
I am so glad everyone in the comments knows about Cher's auto tune debut during the 90s
I enjoy how you explain what’s going on with various elements of the song.
legit
Best reaction so far! So informative!
Jacob, I would love for your to react to the trio (Mitch, Kirstin and Scott) when they were in high school. It is so much fun and shows their humble, fun beginnings. They were ultra talented back then, too! While they were young and inexperienced, you could see the talent even back then. I would love it! Thanks for considering! It is called Trio Sings Telephone by Lady Gaga In Concert Here's the link @
Great reaction to this great PTX dance medley video. Thanks.
I like your analysis, you know your stuff!
Bro, the medley went live one hour ago! Were you waiting for it!
Yup
Cher's Believe was the song with auto tune that rocked everyone ! I remember it. :) Thanks !
THEY ARRANGE ITTTTT
Wow!
The fact that Jacob was watching this in the premiere!! yaaas he knew we'll be waiting at his reaction to this
lol, I got ya
On Believe, Cher was the first singer to ever use autotune as an artistic effect instead of a correction method, so this was a tribute to her. Lord knows, Cher never needed to use autotune to correct anything, considering she is one of the greatest singers of all time. Unfortunately, too many people that seriously CAN'T sing started using autotune, and now it is horrendously over-used in the industry. But I definitely understand its use in this song.
That was fast.. 👍 This is sooo good 🔥😍
ive watched so many of these reaction videos to this song, so far i think only you and one other person knew boom, boom, boom. im super surprised by that and you are right, that song is from the 2000s not the 90s
😝🤯
what a fast reaction! loving your comments too! 👍
Thanks Zee!
Vocoder is definitely 90s.
Ben Bram and Scott do the most arranging, but Kevin does quite a bit too. Kirstin has at least done some co-arranging on songs she sings lead on. Not sure about Matt. I know Avi did a ton of arranging when he was in the group, but I've no idea how much Matt took on.
Wow it became popular so fast
For sure!
They stuck with the Cher vocals on her song. I loved the wardrobe changes...amazing editing!
Nice!!
Incredible.❤️
You have to hear "Cinta Satu Malam" from Indonesia, which sounds like the other one there
Eiffel 65’s Blue is the highlight of this songsp.this part Never cease to make me smile
They used auto tune at a certain point during the medley because Cher used auto tune as an effect on the song they're covering.
Edit: I just realized this question has already been answered a bajillion times lol
Omg I remember when Cher’s song came out. It was super auto tuned. That’s why they did it - I’m guessing
Oh wow!
Long time lurker, first time commenting. Really enjoy your videos. Just recently was introduced to Wizard of Ahhhhs by Todrick Hall. Creative, would like to see your reaction. Thanks for all the content.
If this went into the early 00's then they'd better have Heaven by DJ Sammy
Hi new to your Chanel I am a pentaholic loved this reaction thank you 😃
Thank you!
Cher used auto tune as an effect in the original. That’s why PTX used it here.
"Every Time We Touch" came out in 1992 by Maggie Reilly, but Cascada covered it in 2006 when it really hit big.
Cascada covered it in 2005... and yeah, it was big. It's clear they are singing the dance version Cascada made popular though... but I'm not complaining because I love that version.
T Pain didn’t start the auto tune trend lol but he did in hip hop. Cher used autotune for that song in the 90’s.
Ah nice
Cher doing it with autotune effect in 1999 is why Adam Lambert's version in 2009 on America Idol was so cool
Ohh nice!
Bon Jovi was doing that voice synth thing in the 80s
You should check out voiceplay's newest cover “go the distance “
Just out of curiosity, is it possible to fake the autotune effect? To make it sound like you're using it but actually just using your voice. If it is, I wouldn't put it past this group, they are amazingly talented.
Not 80 pentatonix reactions, 150+. All pretty awesome.
🙏🏼🙏🏼
It was a tribute to Mitch's love of Cher.
Cher!
should react to the toddy 90s and 2000 medley

They said they put the auto tune in to pay homage to the original artists. Cher did use it.
You’re correct, not all are from the 90s. Still great!

In answer to your question, autotune was invented in 1996. However it was not actually used until the next year. Also in 1998, cher brought it to prominence with her hit.
oh wow!
When are you going to react the clips and musics from League of Legends? :3
You're amazing!!! Thnk you!
Actually PTX used auto tune in this video, only on the Cher song, because Cher was the first to use it on a noticiable scale, they only did it to pay homage to her. That is the only time you will hear PTX use it.
Yeah...there are some 2000s tunes in there...
You should react to sabrina carpenter performing skin at the 32nd annual GLAAD media awards

Life after love is a heavily auto tuned track, which is, I'm guessing, why they used auto tune there.
Cascada was 2006.. so 90's and 2000's
That song by Cher was all auto tuned that was it's signature sound. Also Cher was still hot when she did that. And I was way younger. Seems to me she did that song on a battle ship in front of a bunch of sailors while not wearing a whole ton of clothes. So a cheesy old lady shaking her stuff in front of a bunch of kids. But I liked that song, even though my straight up preference is Gospel, CCM and Southern Gospel. I admire talent in almost every genre.
I have adored PTX from the get-go I mean from the time they sang "we are, PENTATONIX"
I love your breakdowns. As a singer myself, I glean little details to improve my game. I'm a worship leader. God bless.
(disclaimer: I love music, don't always like the message)
Oh wow! Thanks for sharing!
Would you please react to Pentatonix singing

Auto tune was used on chers original
