The fact that Wine (that’s what CrossOver is a wrapper for) can run literal malware and full games, but still fails to run even basic programs for me is insane
Wine is powerful, when you know how to use it.
It can run almost any porgram, but if you forgot to install required libraries (dotnet, msvc, directx, etc) on your prefix, then the program might not work.
And remember, that malware for the most part are pretty simple programs, designed to work independently, without additional libraries the target might not have installed, and to not get detected via api calls to additional components.
Like @aebisdecunter, wine is actually very competent but can take time to configure. Proton(used by Steam deck) is also based on Wine.

wine is cool until you need to install 300 libraries to get vocaloid to work
@@another-niko-pfp-holder There are several bundles of Wine and software to use with it like Proton (this is what Steam Deck and Steam on Linux use to run Windows games), Wine-GE, Crossover, Winetricks,... though most of them are only on Linux and not MacOS, and libraries are still a problem (especially with like Adobe software and Japanese software). And now you with Mac M series even with like Rosetta some even more x86 Windows software may not work
If you don't have the new ones with their arm CPUs. And even if you have the good old ones it's like meh. If you use something like Zorin it's preset up completely and it auto does all the libraries.
Idk why wine has refused to work on my mac book, I have tried multiple times with different versions and methods but it gives me installing errors on every exe I have tried even after trying to get the libraries its given me catch 22 situations and I just can't get anything to work. I have used wine fine before on linux so I just gave up and bought a new gaming PC (I mean I was gonna get one anyways but still wish I could run windows games on my macbook on the go, mostly just 32bit steam games that USED to work on mac anyways)
Open source bros are becoming better at compatibility than windows, windows gonna be a Linux distro at that speed
this video funny as hell. recently my grandma told me her new mac was really slow. and she has had it since about the summer so not even a year. me being the tech genie decided to you know figure out how many virus was on the computer and I was expecting like 20 or so. There was 3000 virus. So yeah, that was fun to get rid of.

there’s something about this that seems like it’d be sooo cathartic. like i’m suuuuper overly paranoid about viruses and so i’m often so careful to a fault, and have spent quite a bit of money on an antivirus program i probably don’t need considering how careful i am. so i feel like it would be almost therapeutic to just let go of those intense paranoid feelings and just fuck around for a bit

simple fix for the mac would be just removing crossover which will basically kill any viruses from running. but with the network access that was given it probably will infect any windows machines on the network. crossover is running everything in a sandboxed environment

You could actually try something similar with Linux, but there might not be much viruses for it
(at least not for Desktop, more for Servers)
CrossOver is actually not a virus (at least the official one), its a repacked (or customized) version of WINE, which is sort of a Windows -> Linux/Mac translation layer, that allows you to run Windows apps under Linux/Mac.
Fun fact: It's basically what allows you to play Windows games on the Steam Deck (If you see Proton as a fork of WINE)

@@ME0WMERE most other OS’s don’t allow you to accidentally delete your gui or damn near the kernel itself. And for most people, doing even relatively basic tasks (beyond just browsing the internet or something like that) ends up requiring tinkering with stuff that quickly goes beyond the average user’s knowledge and requires them to trust in commands they don’t understand which has a good chance of breaking things more. And at best, works but is very difficult to replicate.
It never has been and likely never will be a very user friendly OS. If someone wants to use Linux, they either have to have a very specific specialized use case or very basic needs, or be willing to really dive into Linux and take it on as a big learning and tinkering experience.
It’s just a completely different beast from windows, Mac OS, iOS and android. So ya, viruses would still be useful for scams and fraud and stuff, but in terms of making a system unusable, it’s plenty easy for the user to do that themselves on Linux.

They will just have it replaced. Contrary to their title, they are actually pretty stupid.

ngl as a mac user i was hoping to learn smth from this, but i really dont emulate windows on my macbook on a daily basis. Only time ive gotten any sort of virus on my mac (adware) was from clicking an ad by accident. So its not impossible.
CrossOver doesnt emulate windows, its turn its internals to work with Linux (and Mac, i guess)

He could just wipe the drive and do a clean install of macOS and it should be fine. Most viruses won't persist after a clean install. There are some viruses that can, like the ones that infect your bios but it doesn't seem like he installed something capable of that here.

I hope he's got apple care or is able to get a full refund. Regardless, I'm so happy about this. Time and time again, family members have been spreading the myth that Macs won't get viruses and you're better off getting a MacBook, I was forced to use an outdated MacBook at the time too just because they think that (and it probably had some viruses that slowed the laptop). This video legitimately brings me joy, not because of the pain he had to go through, but because I'm right about Macs
Well technically the MacBook didn't get any virus, it is just contained only in user space, so he would be able to create new user and the MacBook will be fresh again.
But have to add, there is no such functioning computer without vulnerabilites.
He had to go through a whole bunch of steps to install the viruses though.
A windows computer is also virus proof if you’re a normal person and don’t download random files of unknown origin.

To be fair 90% of this video is just running windows viruses through a windows translation layer. Seems like it would be way safer than windows tbh, but either one is safe if you're not downloading random garbage constantly.

The reality is that for a long time, people just didn't bother writing viruses and malware for Mac. The number of users was significantly less, and most large targets (such as corporations) weren't using Mac computers. Malicious code for Mac started growing as the laptops started getting more popular; especially since the target demographic seems to be richer, less tech savvy people.

That crossover program you found is probably a fork of WINE (stands for WINE is not an emulator), its a program commonly used on Linux to run windows programs. I would know I use linux as my daily driven operating system.
The team that makes Crossover, Codeweavers, is the #1 contributor to WINE and also help Valve with Proton, they're super legit. Absolutely genius developers, I have no clue how they do half the stuff they do. Even Cyberpunk 2077 can somehow run on ARM Macs through Crossover.
