Unfortunately, most survival games fall into the same trap of connecting the game's accelerated time frame to hunger and thirst. What this means is that you then need to not just constantly eat and drink, but also eat and drink in obscenely large amounts. No one needs to eat a buffet's worth of food every five minutes, but in a survival game that seems to be the case. It's incredibly annoying because having to do nothing but eat and drink isn't entertaining.

    • @Medic_Medulla
      @Medic_Medulla Před 2 lety +25

I was disapointed Scum didn't make this list as it's the only "modern" game not using some 2d interface that nails metabolism (hunger/thirst)
It has a very realistic timeframe for the length of time it takes for your muscle and fat reserves to eat away and accompanying fatigue/side affects.
atm it can be a little to easy to survive like there are so many sources of food even if you avoid towns and live solely off the land with bugs, wild plants, mushrooms, fish, hunting
so that might be why it wasn't here but imo it's silly testing your might in a survival game by dieing to hunger every 5 minutes its like testing your flying capibility by flying in ace combat...
Scum is still in development/early access but it nails the survival genre basics better then any and the devs have been pumping away at it consitantly.
it's not perfect it has a long way to go but imo it is stronger then many of the titles that made this list
Really can't wait for the medical system to be complete to be the icing ontop of the survival systems.
It may have been left out due to Project Zomboid being the hot Zombie survival game atm
I love PZ but it falls into the same trope of accelerated thirst/hunger deaths.

I absolutely love the freedom this game gives you, it puts you under a lot of pressure being responsible for a large amount of people that just keep going up.
you got to organize your people by making Laws and keep their hope up while trying to make sure they are warm and have enough food, you also need to research many new technologies and keep up to date as resources are scarce and you can’t get enough without advanced technologies.
Not to mention your interactions with the outer world reying to understand what caused the ice age. I don’t want to spoil the game but if you’re a lover of survival games, city building games (or both!) you NEED to try this one out

The Long Dark can be really unforgiving on higher difficulties. I started playing one of the challenge scenarios, and couldn't get out of the starting region, because there was barely any loot to take, I had only basic clothes on me, and there were wolves everywhere! But I love the game anyway, it's a lot of fun and the atmosphere just gives you chills at times.
Green Hell was fun too, though it took me a while to get used to. The campaign was slightly underwhelming, but I'm actually more glad I got the bad ending.
Don't Starve is cool, but hard. Definitely something for Tim Burton fans, I think.
The rest, I know of (almost all of them), but either didn't play, or didn't care for. Another couple of survival sims you've missed (deliberately or not) are:
    1. "7 days to die", a zombie-survival. Yeah, it's unrealistic, but can be challenging.
    2. "Stranded Deep". This one's more realistic, though some things like animal behaviours are stretched to make a challenge, and certain things can feel arcady.
Both are still in development though, so maybe that's why you didn't include them?

@@irvinnorris7041 no to both. In fact, verticality in TLD is problematic, because you can hurt yourself by falling from even smaller heights. This is explained as your character having a heavy backpack and several layers of clothes, but I'm not buying it. And tree houses are a bad idea, because of the wind. There's actually little point in having player-built shelter, because of all the pre-existing buildings you can inhabit.
You can build treehouses in Green Hell as per one of the latest updates. And you can climb palm trees in Stranded Deep, to pick coconuts.

Frost Punk is very addictive and fun. I enjoyed playing this game so much. It makes you wonder if one day the world would end up this way, and this would be the way people survive and how they would live. It offers challenges and rewarding moments when you end a day on a good note. But damn when you start to struggle and fall behind, it’s very punishing and troublesome to come back from any mistakes you make. It’s one of those games you need to make every decision correctly, or you’ll suffer from it further down the play through

Dude, in The Long Dark you have to move around to gather limited supplies at first, but you failed to mention that your character LEARNS to make all his own supplies from the environment as you go…
You eventually craft and fix clothes with animal parts, cook the food you hunted, boil your herbal remedies, and make your own bow from sticks and bird feathers and whatnot…
It’s not just that you stay at a location until the location runs out of supplies and move on, you’re snowballing in knowledge the entire time until you’re a bonafide wild man.
Glad you covered it but it’s more in depth and has much more long-term playability than I feel was implied.

surprised to see the 11 bit games here but yes they are great. I started with the big hit Frostpunk (sequel coming out soon) but _This War of Mine_ is one of those unique games you keep coming back to every so often... a perfect blend of hard - and unforgiving - mechanics with casual playstyle, perfect for that 20 minute break. Enough variation in characters to make up your group and enough scenarios to play with them in, plus an expansion which intensifies the psychological perspective by making children - and their mechanics - part of the war survivor drama as well as 3 _Stories_ (campaigns) released as DLCs - I suggest getting the whole bundle, this game goes on sale often both on Steam and GOG. A few of the characters have unique traits that make a big difference, like a spacious backpack or the ability to make less noise, crucial for sneaking in to the most dangerous places in the game, and there are many. Very well paced and engaging gameplay - I stopped playing it late at night because I was getting paranoid that my own real house was getting broken in to while I was playing, lol.

It makes it very hard to finish the game.
That problem can probably be chalked up to the fact that I might have been "rushing" (rushing in quotations because I wasn't really rushing it. I was just trying to make my way towards new biomes to spice up the gameplay. I never really rushed this, but like I said, I was actively looking for new biomes.), so please, if you play the game, take your time. Explore everything. It'll help your evolution and it'll maximize your enjoyment

That moment in Kingdom Come: Deliverance when you’re newer to the game and you spent 4+ hours messing around by levelling up archery with the contests, run around the woods picking 300 herbs while gaining vitality etc.. only to try and jump over a random bush that magically flings you up and backward 15 feet in the air causing you to bleed… then you realize you don’t have a single bandage, you’re in the middle of nowhere, and you haven’t saved the game a single time in all those hours…
The fact that I didn’t uninstall instantly and powered through, eventually falling in love with so much about the game makes me feel like a true survivor.. oh and also a massive nerd but I’m cool with that🤣

Wonderful game. Especially with the newer Story Mode added in. It's all based off of the Siege of Sarajevo during the Slav conflicts in the early/mid 90s. I would read about it; it was a very interesting (and VERY dark) conflict with so many complexities to it. This War of Mine puts your right into a situation where it's like you're one of those people/families that had to deal with something like that and not know if or when the end of the siege would occur. Terrifying on a very real level, but such a gorgeous game in its own way...

Played This War of Mine a couple of years back and it just hit me differently because I’ve lived a lot of those events back in my home country where a civil revolutionary war is happening. I couldn’t help myself from crying a lot of times it was just too painful to remember what we had to do to survive as civilians whom were caught in an active war zone and the game nailed these scenarios to the fullest. An absolutely great game I recommend it if you didn’t play it yet.
