I really learned from that queen move at the end where you block the pawn and the king can't do anything. Even though it seems really obvious now I don't think it would have occurred to me that I could just leave that queen there and not worry about it.
I could see the direction this was going because I sometimes play the Ruy Exchange - definitely required technique for that opening.

Hey John, this is guys. I see that the channel is moving much more toward educational content lately, but I wish you'd upload more of your bullet tournaments as well. I have always enjoyed them. I don't know of *anyone* who can play bullet at the level you do while still commentating on the game. Thanks for all the years of great content!
All of your viewers are surely feeling spoiled by all this great content! The endgame in the 3 + 0 game is another reminder about the paramount importance of pawns/pawn structure and play in chess ("Pawns are the soul of chess"). The pawn endgame reminds me of ideal Exchange Spanish endings, where one side's pawn majority is crippled because of doubled pawns, whereas the other side's healthy pawn majority can often be winning. Knowing these fundamentals thoroughly is the basis of success in chess.

I have perhaps a topic for one of your videos. I usually hate to go through my lost rapid games. I know I know, not very mature from my side😅. I just stagnated completely in last years because I am not from my mistakes.
I would like to hear your opinion about this. How can a player like me commit himself to go through all games, and how exactly should I make this analysis? I know that a good coach would demands the students to analyse the games, but what about self improvers without any discipline?

That pawn structure on the queenside come up sometimes in the Ruy Lopez exchange variation. If black here, or white in the exchange variation has his pawns set up right, the other side cannot create a passed pawn on the queenside, whereas the kingside majority can lead to a passed pawn. The only thing that black has to make sure is that white does not penetrate on the queenside with his king, or before exchanges with a piece. Here black can create a passed pawn that is far enough advanced that it will not even matter if white decides for a race by infiltrating to the queenside. I have won lots of games in the exchange spanish like this. It is known as an endgame opening variation, but actually there are imbalances in the position and it can be won in the middlegame, and in some variations be very sharp.
I like this way of featuring livestream games on CZcams with analysis.
Yeah the forest fire haze is pretty bad some days, depending on the prevailing winds. Usually sits higher in the atmosphere and just makes for an orange sun.
I notice the opponent seemed to have less tempe available after being stuck with double double isolated pawns.
p.s. Tim Hortons isn't as good as people say it is.

John, it seems to me that while you are also very good tactically, you tend to play very solidly and consistently. Maybe I'm wrong here, but I suspect that the solidity of your play actually might have hampered you when you were pursuing Grandmaster norms. I think a lot of people get their norms by playing provocatively in a lot of events, and get enough strong results to go with the weaker results that would come from provocative and risky play. Just something that occurred to me. Thanks.
It's an interesting theory, but stylistic differences don't necessarily translate to rating differences. Look at some of the former world champs like Botvinnik or Karpov who employed this solid and consistent style, or even current players like Wesley So or Dmitry Andreikin. These players didn't play 'provocative' chess and therefore wouldn't be considered well-rounded using that criterion, but weren't hampered in their rating gains. If you're consistently playing at a 2600 classical performance rating (per one of the GM norm requirements) you shouldn't have a problem getting the title.
@@stubeeks My comment was directed at players like John who are or were trying to get norms and are hovering around 2500 FIDE. If you play very consistently at that rating you can get respectable results, even above your rating sometimes, and still have those results not be good enough to earn a GM norm. I'm suggesting that if you play provocatively you might have a higher chance to have a few exceptionally good results i.e. above 2600 tournament performance, to get your norms. Then you can play how you prefer with the plan of keeping your rating above 2500. A player well above 2500 such as all the examples you cited, are going to get their ratings and norms no matter what.

@@stubeeks True. I guess I'm thinking of lines that complicate things for both sides rather than just offering a decent but static advantage. What those lines are I have no idea since I'm not anywhere near a 2500 player.
