I would think the Belgium flag is older. The Germans only started to use thise flag after WW1. I don't know the specific year, but during WW1, the german flag was black White red, not yellow (or golden as they say).

@@welwin0389 Nee klopt, maar het is een heel belangrijk onderdeel van onze economie geweest, voor de VOC waren er de Hanzesteden en via die noordelijke handelsroute werd er van alles verhandeld, zoals metalen, vis, graan, wijn, kruiden, zout, etc, etc. Vis was, en was ook in de "VOC tijd" een belangrijk volksvoedsel, en er was veel zout nodig om dat goed te houden.
Hilbert zou al het gewonnen Franse zout moeten gebruiken om een video over de Nederlandse rol in de Hanze te maken. ;)

One can say "the French national flag is older than the Dutch national flag". It is historically accurate.
Before end of 18th/19th century no country had a "national" flag. The concept simply didn't exist. The Dutch flag, surely older than the French one, was used by the Dutch Navy. Meanwhile, The French used the White royal banner for their Navy.
But it is an anachronism to make those naval flags universally-known symbols of a Nation like it is today. The idea of a "national falg", that can be used at sea like on land, was invented during the French Revolution (at the same time as nationalism).
However, the Dutch "colors" (let's say this) are sure older than the French ones.

When it comes to history, Willem I was a decent guy and even loved by a lot of people from Belgium, but his son was a complete asshole. This plus religion and the influence of the French elite made us seperated.

Wanneer dat, het verschil in religie en de invloed van de Franse elite op de Walen niet zo hoog was opgelopen waren we samen volgens mij nog dik tevreden geweest. The Dutch flag is probably even older. 1568 is when it was used during the independence struggle to represent the united Netherlands. Before that point, however, there are records of a red-white-blue flag being used in the province of Holland a early as the 1300's... It's possible that it was originally a flag representing Holland and during the independence struggle this flag was taken for a broader purpose

Haha. I remember reading a newspaper which once did a check on the accuracy of Wikipedia, in comparison to other encyclopedias.
Wikipedia had by far the least errors. They also had the best written and the most informative articles.

@@Nabium Wikipedia is usually reliable on very visited topics, since it gets fact-checked and corrected constantly by thousands of people, whereas with regular encyclopedias you normally depend on one asshole doing his job right without being biased. The problem with Wikipedia is you may stumble onto something that has been recently edited with misinformation, or you may have run into something obscure no one has fact-checked yet.
@@mr.bonkers2310 Yes, the references on Wikipedia are way better than other encyclopedias, so it's a much better tool to use. Then you can check the references, read them and cite them for your school work, instead of citing Wikipedia itself.
Wikipedia can be a very reliable source, in my experience especially when it comes to maths & the sort, but just like any source you should always use multiple ones and compare for accuracy

The English Wikipedia points out that the French and Russian flags were both clearly inspired by the Dutch flag.

As a kid from Amsterdam I moved to Australia in '86 when I was 8yr old and I just love these videos. I missed out on a lot of Dutch history and your videos are great little packages of absorbable knowledge.
On a side note.. I picked your Dutch accent the first min of the first video I saw but I can hear a very posh English accent coming through so much so would I be right to assume you went to an expensive school in England at some point? Your English is better than mine... lol.
Fun fact: the French flag first was horizontal as well. But blue white red and red white blue was a bit confusing. As the dutch had their flag first the French had to change.

@@iteachyou1575 I am curious on what you think what kind of flag the Dutch used besides the navy then. For your information the Dutch never used a special "navy flag". The Netherlands only had one flag. It is true that the navy used the red version more often before most other people in the Netherlands who more often used the orange striped version. But both are the same flag, just different versions of it (Statenvlag and Prinsenvlag). The red striped version was most common at the end of the 17th century, though.
