      Yeah, the pixel art in general is quite good. Most NES games unfortunately have bad to mediocre pixel art at best. There are a few exceptions, but those mostly came out pretty late, when the SNES was already released, and therefore didn't sell well. One of those other games is Kabuki: Quantum Warriors.

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 Před rokem +4

      @@cube2fox it's because all the good looking NES games had special extra chips in the cartridges that allowed them to use more colours at once and have more sprites on screen etc. Like how SNES games had special extra chips, most famously the Super FX chip, which was one of many, well so did the NES. But most games didn't have them, because they'd cost the developer/publisher more money to manufacture the cartridge if they had to include all these extra chips in them, and most games also were developed before these chips were widely available in the first place (there was actually a shortage of chips for a while in the 80s which is why games like the legend of Zelda came on disks instead of cartridges in Japan, and disks don't have any chips in them at all let alone extra ones. So these chips were only invented later on in the console's lifespan (especially for its lifespan in Japan where it had already been out for 2 years when the NES debuted in the west). So yeah for those reasons, most NES games don't include the special extra chips. It means that the ones that _DO_ include them, like Little Samson here, and Kirby, stand out even more.
      But yeah the graphics on display here in Little Sampson are literally impossible for the NES to achieve on its own. It just can't do it. It needs the co-processor chips - the extra chips in the cartridges - to be able to do this.

    • @cube2fox
      @cube2fox Před rokem +3

      @@duffman18 I'm not sure the enhancement chips for NES (as opposed to SNES) did a lot of graphics enhancing. I thought those were mainly for additional ROM and RAM. What type of chips does Little Samson contain? I'm pretty sure a lot of the reason it looks quite good is that they had a good pixel artist.

It used to be that once kiddies went away to work or college, the parents would offload the games wherever they could, but now they can look online and find out just how valuable they can be. On the other hand, many cartridges fall into the same pitfall as antiques, rare comics, or 1st edition classic books. My gaming nostalgia for 8/16 bit eras is split in 2
    First from the late 80s thru mid 90s when it was contemporary
    And a few years later when I discovered emulation. This was one I found on emulation and damn it is good

    Thank you for reviewing this game! As someone just a smidgen older than you, I regret never knowing about this one when I was a little kid. It's a shame because it looks both fun and adorable, and it's a shame that it probably isn't available on any weird compilation games, or eshop-purchasable. Always fun to see the really old, but good, games given some love!

    There's actually a lot of story for this game but it's all in the manual, including why Kikira fights Samson initially.
    Basically in true game fashion, an ancient dark force appears ready to conquer the known world and the Emperor Hans sends out a call for heroes, to his luck 4 heroes who not only have powers of their own but have been chosen by the Mystic Bells (which they're all using as projectile attacks) answer the call.
    Samson- a wild child who lost family to the forces of darkness he was raised by barbarians and animals and is so pure of heart he had his Bell long before the call was even made.
    Kikira- Once one of the greatest warriors to ever live, she swore she would prove she was the best by slaying dragons. After killing a juvenile dragon she was cursed to be a dragon herself forever. This did nothing to curb her arrogance and lack of empathy which is why she attacks Samson at first, she believes she should be in charge.
    KO- A legendary sage and wizard, after a thief broke into his tower and caused an accident that cursed them both, he ended up a mouse. He actually wasn't unhappy considering that sort of incident was exactly what he was always dreading and decided to live in retirement as a mouse until the call was made
    Gamm- Actually the thief who caused the accident that cursed both him and KO. Unlike KO, he's not happy about his predicament and joins the fight in the sole hopes he can go back to being a human again

    I don't think I've ever seen such vibrant & detailed backgrounds & impeccable color juxtaposition w/deep greens, & golden yellows, along with the darker peach/pink tone Seashells in the rock...in one frame, I saw all that, and a perfectly placed enemy slug who's something akin to a florescent or neon blue w/a hot pink midsection.

    Thanks for making this video, I remember playing this on an emulator in 2004 with the title being “Lickle.” I picked it bc the name was silly but before long, when I had a friend over I would insist they try it. Needless to say, it met resounding approval.

    From what I remember, the first fight with the dragon happens because it doesn't want to go "into" Samson's bell (as the other characters have already done a this point) so that you can change into them. The first few times I played this game I got my butt handed to me in this fight.

    I'm 38, and the first couple years at college, 2002-2004, I dropped buying and playing new games entirely (very minimalist), but I had discovered emulation and spent that same time playing old NES games. I remember one night especially out of my mind playing Bubble Bobble and Mega Man 2 (which I rented many times but never owned) and thinking this is one of the best things I've ever seen. So while I wasn't out acquiring cartridges, it is funny that at about the same time many from that NES generation were revisiting it.

    I got this game at some point while I was in college and working at a glorified pawn shop that only bought video games, CDs, and DVDs. I don't remember what year it was, but I remember it was a situation where some woman brought in her son's games or her husband's games or whatever. I wasn't aware of Little Samson's rarity or even its existence, so I bought it directly from the woman for $5, took it home, and played it for hours into the night. Great game!

    I found this one on multi NES cart a few years ago, which finally got me around to playing it. I thought it really did live up to the hype. Still hoping I’ll find the original at a thrift store or yard sale one of these days though. That’s how I find most of my games, junking them in the wild, although most of my collection I picked up in the late 90’s when you could find a ton of this stuff for a few bucks each at goodwill. I should’ve collected more. I had no idea this stuff would get as collectible as it is. My SNES still has the 4.99 price tag on it!😂

    41 here. I remember in the late 90s in my area we had an indoor, year round flea market on the weekends. There was this person who sold retro games. I think they were all loose. NES, SNES, and Genesis games went for either 25 cents or 50 cents (or buy in bulk for less) and 10 cents for Atari 2600/5200/7800 games. I wasn't into retro gaming at that time beyond a small handful of games so I passed. I kick myself in the butt for not cleaning the person out when I had the chance.

    I actually owned this game as a kid, but I lent it to a friend who moved away without giving it back. I still played it once in a while on emulators (early NESticle user here), but when I got my NES fixed up back in 2010 I wanted to own a copy again. Remember being shocked that I had to pay $50 for it, much more than most other NES carts back then. I guess I should be happy I got it in 2010 and not in 2020.
