Degrassi is one of the craziest shows I’ve ever seen . You should definitely watch the whole show including the 80s version .
The one episode I remember the most about the 80’s version is when the one student (forgot his name) committed suicide in the bathroom while everyone was in class. Like you can hear the gunshot in the background in one of the scenes when they were in one of the classes. Such an eerie sound when i went back to rewatch that.

This wasn't a family show though, it's always been a show aimed at teens and preteens, to grow with the cast, and learn how to deal with tough situations. In the 70s they often used it to talk about taboo subjects, like sexual assault, but they also try to teach acceptance of others, and how to not be a piece of shit teen. It wasn't ever one of my favorites, but I appreciate the effort and thought

I wouldn’t really call this a “family” show, it’s the first show that I watched when hit my teens/late pre-teens because it was really raw and educational for that demographic.
No this is a family show. Parents are supposed to watch this with their kids so they can answer questions and help them understand the lessons the kids in the show are learning.

Who in the world said this was family show? I think it's mostly a teen show and like most teen shows it definitely doesn't shy away from harsh issues. I get what you were saying about shows today being a little more romanticized, but I feel like teen shows since the 70s or 80s have always been either raw in tackling dark subjects or amiable in playing it safe and somewhat unrealistic.
We had something similar to the show you’re talking about in the U.K., it was called Grange Hill. Which tackled similar issues, so I like to think of Degrassi as a Canadian Grange Hill. The issues covered in GH were as followed:
Teen pregnancy
Drug abuse
Racism
Sexual assault
Death
Divorce
HIV/AIDS
Homelessness
etc.

Looking back it's weird seeing how episode one he helps save Emma from a predator then later on in the series he gets falsely accused by a student.
Over the following seasons, Drake gets shot in the back and paralyzed, his friend gets cancer, Manny gets nude footage of herself leaked, and one of their two guy friends gets stabbed to death. And that's JUST the kids mentioned in this one episode!

Hi Alex! I agree with you on how shows now tend to romanticize teen issues. I grew up with Degrassi and really appreciate how raw it was. They had a slogan 'Degressi...It Goes There' or something like that but I loved how they told the stories. I think it helped alot of teens get through high school and hopefully avoid many of the issues the characters went through. It helped me at least. Anyway...great video, can't wait for the next!

I didn't know about this show until 2010 when I was 18. I watched it for the first time with my 12 year old cousin. Her mom started letting her watch it when she was nine. I was surprised until I realized that she has seen worse things in real life on the street where she lived. She had gang members who lived on her street. Drive by shootings were a regular occurrence. I remember going over to her house for Christmas and not being able to leave her house afterwards because there was triple homicide in the street in front of her house and there ended up being a police standoff.

7:00 had me damn near choke on my water. It caught me off guard even though I have binged watch this channel for days now. Also, props to Alex acknowledging that it's dangerous for teenagers to be alone with other teenagers too. People are obsessed with age today, as if no one gets hurt by people younger than them or in their peer groups. The lesson is be mindful of who you let into your lives. Vet them. Pay attention to them even if it's someone you've known or are related to for a long time. Things happen, and people change.

no matter how old i am i will never get tired of rewatching degrassi. it taught me so much. i only rewatch it for nostalgia purposes lol. he should react to season 12
They made me watch this show in health class and all I remember is pain. Everything wrong and horrible that could happen happened to these kids. Raw is the perfect way to describe it. That's how I felt watching it. I don't remember a single episode plot line, I just remember watching it was painful af.

They skipped over this episode and showed the episode where Ashley ran for class president against JT. This episode was on hold until 2003.

Degrassi was one of those shows that went from 1 to 100 in like five minutes of each episode. Like at times I couldn't even believe it was a teen drama
i was always telling myself, damn, these kids... have more drama going on than regular adults.

I saw this show when I was around 15, and it felt real. So raw. It really hit me hard, they talk about every topic you could imagine and they did it so well.
This first episode is definitely one of the scariest.

I really love how Degrassi communicated the stories and the issues on level with the kids that watched it.
They always had actors who were the actual age of the kids they portrayed, they gave them realistic motives and thoughts and dialogues, they didnt turn them into "dumb kids" but also didnt treat them like adults. There's something very real and honest about the way they told these stories that I haven't seen in any other show. I'm really sad the Netflix reboot got cancelled, it was a little more messy and clumsy and weirdly paced but I felt like it really had potential.
Their actions had real consequences, not like anything today, they always portrayed storylines as close to realistic as TV could possibly make it, no hero's, shit things happen you get over it, and it shown that really well, I watched upto half way through season 10 but all my favourite characters had left by then so I gave up
I loved degrassi I always go back to it grew up on it not my favorite tv show but most def for me nostalgia come to mind

I know and the ending of Next Class deserved more fanfare as it would be final Degrassi series! The production company sold the school, and that was pretty much the last nail on the coffin.

I remember watching this show for the first time, somewhere in the middle of Next Generation and thinking, "this show is absolutely ridiculous, I would never watch this show, and I'm right around their target demographic!" And then I went on to record every episode on my DVR and watching it every day.

In my 30’s and just finished binging all of Degrassi. Even looking back and watching it now, I’m so impressed with the cast’s amazing acting skills for their ages.
I’m also mad that all the adults really were in their late 20’s/extremely early 30’s when it was filmed… And now I just wonder if I look that old.
