He told a friend, the editor of his hometown newspaper, the Wolverhampton Express and Star, that he planned to launch a rocket into the sky to illuminate the night sky. Since then, the shadow cast by that rocket has hung over British politics. That Powell's River of Blood speech was a first is why it was so enthralling. It was the first time a major politician had spoken out against the cosy establishment consensus on immigration that had prevailed between both parties since World War II.
