@@Blizzard-kf3qm Smuntz Sr did not understand that children should choose their own path. But one can’t help but feel sorry for Ernie and Lars for the fact that one could not win the respect of his father, no matter how hard he tried, and the second for the fact that he sacrificed his dreams because of his father and also because he was unlucky with his wife. Because of these circumstances, both of them were in pain and agony all their lives

@@christopherjohnson5236 The mouse also did this as a token of gratitude for the fact that Ernie and Lars did not kill it. Yes, they were given the opportunity to get even with the mouse for everything that it had done, but the brothers never did this, because it became a pity to beat a living creature with a shovel plus they realized that finishing off a living creature with a shovel while it is unconscious is too cruel. Everything is clear with Lars, but Ernie... I didn't expect that he wouldn't be able to finish off the mouse, because that's what he wanted most

A short and simple ending to one of my favourite childhood films with a very deep meaning behind it. Throughout the entire movie, the brothers were bickering at one another while trying to get rid of the mouse, so nothing worked because they were focused on themselves rather on one another, which caused everything to derail into one big mess, but when they started to collaborate together, they saw how good it feels to succeed in life with someone else helping you out by your side, knowing you're not alone.
Without something to tie you to others and connect you to family or friends, you'll always end up in trouble. "A world without string is chaos".

Figuring out the true meaning behind a movie is the most challenging and fun to some people. Heck, from what I've seen, it made sense. They've both struggled with their respective careers and have found themselves bickering amongst each other due to their past as brothers. They wanted to secure their future financially, but have made questionable means to do so. By trying to sell the house financially, and there was the fact of the string factory they've inherited. The mouse became a foil because it lived in that house where their father used to live in. I don't know about the mice behind the reincarnation of the brothers' father, as I've didn't even know if their dad was that smart. I just assumed that it was a highly intelligent mouse that probably bore witness to the old man's final days and became only a foil to make the brothers realize something that's really important.

I find it cute that the mouse decided to give Ernie and Lars a happy ending by opening up a cheese string ball factory for them after flooding their house considering that it shows that the mouse wasn't heartless and did an act of kindness after realizing that Ernie and Lars were miserable without a home! =)

Doubt it. The house had no real sentimental value to them. It’s whole purpose was to be sold so Lars would have money to invest in keeping the factory running and Ernie to open a new restraunt. With the string cheese business both brothers get what they want so it would be pointless to spend an astronomical sum to rebuild it

I think near the end he realized that, while he got his revenge on the brothers for kicking him out of his house, it meant they all wound up with nothing. Everybody lost when they all tried to get their own way; only through negotiation and collaboration did they find a new way forward that proved fruitful for everyone. Not possible, because the father and the mouse were alive at the same time.
If you re-watch the scene where the Lawyer is first telling them about the house, he says 'you're father acquired it many years ago as payment for a dept. He never lived there, but it's interesting. It seems the pervious owner was found locked in a trunk in the attic."
Then when the cops are explaining about the exterminator. "911 call. No voice, but we heard screaming in the background. We found him locked in a trunk in the attic."
Either that one mouse has super intelligence and incredible longevity for a common brown mouse, or the mice pass their tricks on from one generation to the next. However, seeing as we only ever see the one mouse, I'm leaning toward the latter.

After the house was destroyed he was forced to let go and finally made peace with himself and the brothers by showing them how to make string cheese.

The whole concluding theory of string cheese being the original manufactured idea of a house mouse is what makes this movie a one of a kind!! I absolutely love this ending because it gives a sense of realism as well as fantasy. The repeating concept of “String” that keeps all ties of the world together, including family, and even the faith of a little mouse, is some of the greatest storytelling imo.
