I love to do Poland Reactions and Reaction to Poland videos. I especially love to react to Polish culture, Polish history and Polish Comedy. The "what starts with WH" joke was much better translated in the English captions version: "what starts with R and rules Poland? Rabbis (Jewish scholars)? No, rye."
It's a reference to the majority of wealthier business owners at that time in Poland being Jewish. But also about Poland always being one of the biggest exporters of grains in Europe. (Producing good crops was important)
Nie wydaje mi się, że żydzi w tamtym czasie byli bogaci, czy byli posiadaczami ziemskimi. Co prawda, jako jedyni mogli uprawiać lichwę (pożyczać na procent), prowadzili też interesy szlachty i magnatów (zajmowali się handlem, np. sprzedawali ich zboże). Ten żart to raczej odniesienie do nowszych czasów, konkretnie do XIX i XX wieku, ale też do antysemityzmu w XXI wieku wśród niektórych Polaków i teorii, że żydzi żądzą Polską.
@@LucasCh.L. dlatego powiedziałam business owners a nie land owners. Żydzi nie posiadali dużo ziemi ale prowadzili biznesy sklepy itp. i w dużych miastach stanowili większość zamożnych mieszczan

@@damianwozniak3798 the Polish original line literally says rye (not wheat) which has nothing to do with vodka. And sure you can boil it down to "poland is anti-Semitic and believes in conspiracy theories about Jews" but if you had some basic historical knowledge you would understand why that joke is relevant to the time period of the show not just modern references

I noticed that other language versions are not that savage as it is in Polish , for example what rules Poland and starts on "Ż" żyto ? (rye) ... żydzi (jews)... and there is more

This has so many jokes that are only funny in Polish. I'm trying to say that the best dialogs are lost in translation. But in Polish, it's simply hilarious 😂
Tak samo jak np. Shrek. Zrobili dubbing i żeby Polacy mogli się również pośmiać musieli coś ,,Polskiego" wcisnąć jak np. Shrek 2. Shrek, Fiona i osioł są już u rodziców Fiony i wchodzi nagle osioł i mówi ,,dzień dobry, cześć i czołem pytacie skąd się wziąłem..." To jest z polskiej komedii, w oryginale na pewno był inny tekst. Albo jak ciastek w pierwszej części był ,,torturowany" przez Lorda ,,żwirek kręci z Muchomorkiem". ,,Bajki z mchu i paproci" była znane tylko w Polsce.
@@nienadali3022 wszystko sie zgadza. Dlatego film Shrek tez wole oglądać w oryginalnej wersji. Roznica polega tylko na tym ze serial 1670 wyśmiewa wiele rzeczy współczesnych z zycia codziennego i politycznego, i dzieki temu troche wytyka nam błędy i uczy. A Shrek to tylko miła bajeczka. Więc uważam ze niezrozumienie akurat tego serialu jest większą stratą niż np w przypadku Shreka.
@RozaMP tak, ,,1670" wyśmiewa ale chodzi mi o to, że tzw. ,,dowcip językowy" jest zrozumiały dla danego kraju. W Ameryce zapewne mają/mieli jakiś odpowiednik naszego Żwirka i Muchomorka" , o którym np. Polacy nie słyszeli i dla 90-95% oglądaczy nie było by to śmieszne, bo by nie rozumieli. Tak samo jak ,,Co ludzie powiedzą?"

Kto wyłapał sens tego dowcipu, ciągle powtarzającego się w całym serialu? Bardzo mało ludzi bo serial w Polsce był znany na przełomie XX-XXI wieku, oglądali go w większości ludzie, którzy nie znali angielskiego i dla wielu ludzi ten serial był głupi. Shrek był kilka lat później i ktoś mądrze pomyślał aby wprowadzić polskie akcenty w dubbing po to aby wszyscy się z tego śmiali (nie tylko dzieci, ale również i dorośli).
@nienadali3022 prawda. Ja po prostu obejrzalam z polowe pierwszego odcinka po angielsku z ciekawości, i zeby zobaczyć czy mogę to polecić znajomej z pracy, ale doszlam do wniosku ze nie warto. Jest dużo gorsza, i zdecydowanie mniej śmieszna. Zreszta wogule traci sens i szkoda to oglądać. Probowali to zastąpić angielskim humorem ale topornie im to poszlo. Ten film jest najlepszy w oryginale i to dla ludzi ktorzy znaja polską historię i polskie realia. Nawet młodzież polskojęzyczna urodzona za granicą nie zrozumie z tego kompletnie nic.

@@pawelglowacz5263 13 posterunek was cringe and generally dismissed even in its time. I'm guessing you were 5-15 years old when it came out, so it catered to your sense of humor of a child. Or you never outgrew those sentiments.
Jakoś mam przeczucie, że niemieckie tłumaczenie/dubbing na netflixie jest lepsze niż angielskie, które jest abominacją . Angielskie tłumaczenie gubi jakieś 90% poczucia humoru i jest mówiąc szczerze skandalem
nie bardzo, probowalam oberjrzec po niemiecku, zeby maz tez zrozumial i wcale nie jest smieszne. Maz odpadl po drugim odcinku a ja obejrzalam jeszcze raz po polsku, duza roznica.
Co zaczyna się na ż i po cichu włada polską?
Ciężko jest przetłumaczyć żarty i trzeba jeszcze znać kontekst historyczny oraz obecne czasy.
Nawet fallusa nie przetłumaczyli...
about the neighbours referrence - it is clearly a comedy and somehow true that if we hadn't had a war with neighbouring countries, there was plenty of neighbours over the fence you could have a fight with , therefore they mentioned here Andrzej 😂😂. and from the description of Andrzej you can see how jealousy turns into a golden sarcasm
Famous German in Poland in XVI/XVII century:
Reinhold Heidenstein, lawyer, historian, chronicler, diplomat, chancellor of the chancellery of Polish kings.
Main character of Chancellor, polish tv series from 1989, based on the novel by Zbigniew Safjan.
Some of the translations in these clips were just terrible.
I would still recommend this series, it's not too long and has a lot of little Polish jokes about the past (and present) and overall it's good.
(The man with the white face was the son of a magnate, at that time wigs and such makeup were fashionable among the high nobility. This fashion came from France if i am not mistaken)
Ngl, I was worried how the show would be received by non-Poles but my (not then yet) boyfriend liked it quite a lot. Probably helped him that we watched it together, so I could point out some translation mistakes in the subs, as well as cultural references in the jokes.
Other great things about Poland. Did you know that Philip Patek most expensive watches were made by two Polish watchmakers check the history. One was Patek and the other was Czapek. I was so shocked myself that the most expensive watch in the world was started by two Polaks.

it's mostly a comedy about the Polish mentality, and yes, it's true, that's why Poles laugh at it so much, because it's about us 😅 unfortunately.... although we are aware of it to some extent 🐵
I live this series. the second series will be available on netflix in 2025. casting for supporting roles is currently underway
This series are really funny, especially the second part of the first season (it's 8 episodes). I wonder how well it translates to other languages cause I've watched it in original Polish and some of the jokes seemed like they would be very hard to translate because of words play in Polish.
Phalluses was in that time a add to magnat's dress code 😅 the longest one is the best therefore on meetings they measured them
Tylko żeby było bardziej śmieszne, fallusy były również nazywane ,,kutasami" , a kutas to też wulgarnie ,,penis" lub ,,mężczyzna który jest dupkiem".❤ O tych problemach właśnie pisałam wcześniej 😂
Również ta ozdoba przy pasie od żupanu, nazywa się u nas ,,frędzel" ale tak też można wulgarnie nazwać ,,mężczyzne, który bardzo często zdradza żonę" te ,,frędzle" również w staropolskim były nazywane ,,chwostkami" i ,,chwostkiem" również można nazwać ,, mężczyznę, który jest dupkiem albo po prostu jest bardzo zły". W ,,Starej Baśni" naród między sobą mówił na króla Popiela ,,Chwostek".
8:30 - the word they said is "Phallusse"
It’s a word game, the decorative part of clothing that polish nobles and rich used to wear called „kutas” which after years changed its meaning to vulgar synonym for penis. That was the joke that the nobles have big „kutas” there was also cold open in the show, nobles on their assembly measured who had biggest one.
@@magdalenasikora3327 I saw the trailer in Polish as well, and he uses the word "fallusy" if they wanted to make the "kutas" joke (which I assume they do at some point in one of the episodes), they likely would have used that exact word.
This series were fun, although some jokes might not be as good after translation.
It's basicaly a joke series laughing from:
- Polish nobility and their belief, that they are superior to other people
- Clergy and their greed
- Antisemitism ( main joke being here, that Jews are acused of 'always conspiring ' and trying to rule the world in secrecy)
- tv shows popular in Poland in 90's, early 2000's
Etc.
Although, some jokes might not be easy to translate, others should work fine everywhere, without knowing any context.
Series themselves present a Monthy Python kind of humor.

But yes, it was pierogi, yes the the dude in a wig with makeup is a dude (a magnate's son) and yes, the series was filmed in Poland (although not in the village of Adamczycha - which is a real place; I think I read that it was filmed somewhere in Bieszczady, I think).
Seriously though, I recommend watching it in Polish with subs. Though I must admit, German subs sound surprisingly good

Ciekawa jestem, który obcokrajowiec zrozumiałby dowcip z tego serialu. A nawet jeśli znajdzie się taka osoba to ile czasu spędziła w Polsce. Mamy innych polityków, inną historię, inne imiona itd...

the series has many references to our history and culture, so it is difficult to understand and translate into other languages entire dialogues and jokes that only Poles and maybe Belarusians and Ukrainians who were under our rule until recently understand

Yeah! Watch it! But I'm not sure how good German translation will be, I know only a bunch of random things in German. ;-; It's a satire, that shows the ugly side of XVIIth century in Poland and how "noble" man used their peasants, but in this case I love the main character. He is kinda like Michael from the office. Too optimistic and absorbed in the world he lives in to see the problems.

Poland in cetruries supported arabics, but wenlost 3 polish and 2 german batallions, in second world war for nothing, sadly. They had to go to africa but the battle was in europe. Now, they decided to invest it in ukraine, this time. So, lost, but who nowasays would toke the win over the land by the river of Egipt, yea, that was the doubt, thats why we let to loose it... Sad but true, still i belive in who is real winner, and this i know and im not wrong, this is is like.. study egiptoöogy, you jave ther mummies and dead faraons, and cleopatras, all not that big deal as this what i saw and still thouhgt of, and what really is worth it all... You know...

Unfortunately, translating into foreign languages doesn't convey many great jokes. Referring to the classic "Lost in Translation." I am a practicing Catholic, but even I find jokes about the Church funny. This series very intelligently and sarcastically mocks the flaws of the Church, Polish mentality, and the feudal system (which was essentially Poland's form of slavery). It's a bit of dark and self-ironic humor, but we like to laugh at ourselves. Trailers show these jokes out of context, which makes them lose even more value.
Regarding architecture, the seventeenth century was a period of intense development for Poland, including in the fields of architecture and urban planning, so a roof like the one you pointed out is definitely from that era. In fact, it's just a small detail compared to other buildings that were erected in Poland at that time.

Gówniany film. Nie wytrzymałem i po ok pół godzinie wyłączyłem. To próba drwiny z własnego kraju, narodu i histori. Nakręcony przez ignorantòw historycznych
Co Ty pieprzysz człowieku. Rewelacyjny serial, może by tak wreszcie wyjąć kija z pupy i pośmiać się z naszych narodowych przywar, kompleksów etc. Trochę dystansu do świata, a przede wszystkim do siebie.

Jeżeli tego nie dostrzegacie w obecnym kontekście politycznym Europy to brakuje wam wyobraźni. Zacząłem oglądać ten serial z nastawieniem na swego rodzaju czarny humor ale niestety szyderstwo przeważało nad humorem - a z byle gówna nie da się śmiać - i to opinia wielu ludzi.
