The grid-like feature in Alexandria are fish farms, nearly 5,200 acres of them. They really do look like that from the air
And the big crop circles are just fields which use irrigation pivots (huge rotating arms with spray heads all along their length).

Suez Canal, cost about 9 billion USD ... as for who paid for it, too long of a story for here.
But no, the Brits had very little to do with it as it would undermine other shipping routes under British control.
The Dead Sea is super salty because it is and has been shrinking, the water evaporates but the salt stays behind.
Eventually it'll be like a salt flat... only not so flat.
Oh, and that one tripped me up.... I've been down the rabbit hole and still have ZERO idea why the southern section of the Dead Sea is divided up like that.
The earthworks have gaps alternating east and west, so best I can figure is that its intended to either slow the water or cause it to travel further.... but I have no idea why they would want to do that.
And I do hate not knowing things like that, anyone got any better ideas?

I always get a chuckle when I see people wondering about center pivot irrigation - shortly after the fish farms; the circles on the ground. There are millions of systems just like that dotting the US. I figured they were more common elsewhere. Apparently, they works well in the Nile Delta region. 😆
And it never fails that immediately after you wash your car, there's a pivot spraying all over the road on your route home.
I saw some nut /UFO/ conspiracy guy who was a "PHD" holding Professor who said those "crop circles" were miniature centrifuges used to accelerate particles like the Cern one to create anti matter. He used Google Earth to show how they were "hidden in plain sight." I actually drove 5 miles out of town, found one and took a picture. sent it to him. He didn't reply haha..
They're called irrigation pivots. The sprinkler pivots in the center of the field and waters in a circle motion. We have them all over the western US. I can't wait to drop a HUMVEE down in Combined Arms and tool around the ground. I do that a lot on the Syria map and always find cool things I miss from the air.

I absolutely love the scaled markers for things like ports, SAM sites, helipads, etc that show up regardless of the zoom level. That will make it so much easier and more intuitive for unit placement when designing missions. I really really hope that becomes standard for all DCS maps. Brilliant touch by OnReTech.

EDIT: You could also do a modern version of the Battle of the Delta with Ramses III versus the Sea People. "History Time" has an excellent episode on that on CZcams for our fellow history geeks.
There were 3 significant battles relating to El Alamein that happened in WW2, in the second half of 1942. The one most people will be "familiar" with is no longer called "the battle of El Alamein", but rather "the battle of Alam el Halfa". The third battle, which started the final Allied sweep across North Africa, was the largest by far, and is at least partly off the west edge of the map shown in the video.
@@victorfinberg8595 Interesting to know, I guess once the map is officially out we can see what is available. What be quite a missed oppurtunity if they leave out that area only by a couple of kilometers.

@@henricomonterosa4534 If you are interested primarily in WW2 ground combat , then DCS is the wrong platform.
If you are interested primarily in WW2 north africa campaign, this map is the wrong venue.
going partly from memory, what happened at el alamein was
1) July 1942. The penultimate Axis push to capture Egypt. Stopped by the Allies, under Auchinleck.
For some reason, Churchill decided to sack Auchinleck.
2) Montgomery takes over, and simply continues to implement Auchinleck's plans.
3) Second battle of el alamein (today called "battle of alam el halfa"). Final Axis push to capture Egypt. Aug/Sept. Stopped cold.
4) Third battle, today called "second battle of el alamein", late 1942. Allies bash their way through the Axis defenses and keep pushing west until the Axis is driven out of north africa.
Most of this should be doable in DCS on this map, except for the very end, where the Axis line is breached.
@@victorfinberg8595 My idea is kind of to get some sources together so a semi accurate DCS campaign could be created. I know that other programs would be more appropriate, but they would lack the possibilities of dcs.

Was nice to see Zoser's stepped pyramid. The Valley of the Kings is a different location altogether, and Tutankhamen's tomb was discovered in 1922. Would be nice to see if the Great Temple at Karnak is modelled.

the circular patterns are farm areas. they are round because they use a watering system that pivots from the middle of the circle and rolls around above the crops

The 'crop circles' are actually just farms. You see the same thing in Arizona here in the US. In low water density areas, they have to use an 'irrigator' which is basically just a sprinkler system that is suspended up on a pipe that carries water from a well point in the center and then can run around in a circle

One of the biggest things I enjoy most about my life is the travel. I moved every year or two of my life.

Wow, this kinda takes me back.
By "this", I mean "the world of data displayed in graphical format, and by "back" I mean to the 90-95 era when I worked for a major EDA (computer aided engineering) firm in design teams making the software that allowed peeps to design ICs and PCBs and visualize/analyze them little bits as they operated. While the displayed objects appear different, when zoomed out/up-high I can see the repetitious imaged of a bit-blt pattern of the desert and farm regions (the little patches of fields have a positional pattern to them... squint and you can see it). The buildings, while they make look unique, are various rotations of about 10-20 renderings, with height as a variable... its wild to begin to mentally construct how the computer terrascapers must have approached the task of creating all these spaces ... one wonders if they take visual data from gooble-maps and use the general themes (road direction, ground-cover-type (wild vs field vs urban) and have a program that populates areas with basic building blocks in an automated manner.. I cannot imagine doing all this geo-definition 'by hand'. It would be fascinating, to me, to learn how they do it at DCS.

Can't wait to see y'all blow it up !! ... dont spend all your damage-model points on a single building... there are so many objects you can crash into.
I have spent some time living in Egypt, spent most of my time living New Cairo. Cairo proper is absolutely massive and crowded and heck. The delta is quite lush, just driving from Cairo to Alexandria you can see so much farmland. The grow a whole lot or wheat, rice, other grains, mangoes, and other fruits. Cap, in regards to New Cairo, most of the city was built in the past 10-20 years, very young city. Also, rent each month in a compound in New Cairo which includes access to a communal pool for the compound is probably about 20-25k Egyptian pounds, which is about 500-650 British pounds at the time of writing, however the currency is currently crashing. That’s why there are so many pools, also because it gets super hot in the summer. The Egyptian Air Force consists mostly of F-16s with a few Mirage 2000s. The main reason the Sinai peninsula has nothing on it is because it’s closed off to the public in fear of terrorists and such, although you can drive around along the coast to a couple cities, but driving across that desert isn’t the best idea. Anyway, thanks for the showcase, really looking forward to more GR content on this map, especially over Cairo.

Thank you for the review but there are some historical additions and corrections. The first major aerial action the area has seen was the Israel independence war (1947-1948). That involved spitfires, Avia-s199 (a Czechoslovakian bf-109) Mosquitos, P-51s, Dakotas, and more. In 1956 Israel was pushed by France and England to invade and take Sinai after Egypt took over the Suez channel from them. Some crazy operations like severing telephone lines by using the props, wings, and weights dangling from p-51s. The Whole of Sinai was taken by Isreal and then returned to be taken again in 1967 during the 6-day war. It remained Israeli through the attrition war (1967-1970) and Yom Kippur (1973) and has seen battles of F-4s, A-4, Mirage III Vs. mig17, mig19, and mig21. Sinay was returned to Egypt in 1980 after the peace agreement. Since then it has seen operations by F-15, f-16, Apache, and more. So historically it is probably one of the most versatile maps out there and a great addition to DCS. Kudos!

@@victorfinberg8595. Israel had its interests for various reasons (Tiran straits and insurgents' bases) but was reluctant to initiate a conflict. However, since Israel was dependent at the time politically and militarily on France and the UK, they couldn't easily refuse requests from France and there are documents from the french archives that show exactly that. But all this is not very relevant for DCS players.
The wee ponds were probably fish farms, and the round crops are pivot irrigation, irrigates a roud section.
I can't wait for the new recreation of Operation Focus.

I’ve been through the Suez Canal 9 times on carriers. My understanding is it’s a million dollars per ship for passage. And I can attest it’s very tight when going through

Oh cool. I've been refreshing my Egyptian history as recently a new chamber has been discovered in the Great pyramid after following information from the Scan the Pyramids project. I urge anyone to look in to this if you've not heard of it, when not watching Grim Reapers that is.

@@powjj Ah Yeah, The good thing is they have less of an excuse not to look in to it now as this completely vindicates muon scanning technology. Many Egyptologists dismiss the detections as voids caused by slump in the infill of the pyramid structure however as a leyman everything I've read indicates that a large amount of morter was used in its construction, unlike later pyramids.
I'm quite taken with Jean-Pierre Houdin's internal ramp theory. In his second iteration of his theory that takes in to account the scan pyramids data he proposes that the void above the Grand Gallery is a second Grand Gallery used to lift the massive 80+ tonnes kings chamber stones using a counterweight to balance them.
I'm a little worried that Zahi Hawass stated that he thinks it's a weight relieving chamber that might be above a room that contains the body of Khufu. I find this a hugely unlikely proposition as the muon detectors that were placed in the Robbers tunnel and the original main entrance way would have detected a room in that position with an undoubted certainty if they detected the small chamber above it.
Also, if this were so then that would mean that they interned Khufu right above the main entrance to the Pyramid about 10 to 15 meters from the outside of the Pyramid. I'm not familiar with a Pyramid or Mastaba that ever had the main burial in such a location. Oh well, he's the Egyptologist and I'm just some guy reading other peoples hard work.
The thing about the Pyramids is that we are all free to speculate about them and I think that the builders would be quite happy to know that we still marvel at what they achieved in there time here on this Earth.

Ok nice map but are you aware about Ground unit path finding Bs in cities ? So ok, you can strike buildings … but you gonna have a lot of headaches with ground units movements in Cairo so Helo convoy escort … not for now

There's some talk on the DCS forum that 32Gb isn't really enough memory, using the Sinai map. You can mess with the page-file sizing, but... If you are in a big mission, using this map it probably will choke is the impression I am getting. I may wait to get this map until I have 64Gb installed.
Not only that, but the file size is going to choke a horse. North of 70 GB. I don't have enough HD space left to even download it. I have a new 2.4 TB drive coming, but it's gonna be a while before I can even download it.
Good to know about the 70+ GB SSD space required. It's such a pain ordering new memory two years after the initial build-out. If you think: "I'll never, ever need more than 32GB" then buy the 64 anyway... No wonder GS has no issues with the map since he is using 128GB memory...

You can definitely take a carrier through the Suez lol. Got the t-shirt. I saw many bullet riddled little structures but no real buildings along the shore.
According to the CIA World Factbook, Egypt's main agricultural exports are sugar cane and beets, wheat, maize, tomatoes, rice, potatoes, oranges, and onions. 26% of its labor force is in agriculture.
There's a video on tube on how they turned parts of their land that wasn't fertile at all into what it's today. They used to import a lot of their vegetables and fruits now they are one of the bigger exporters of it.

25:38 Well the backbone of the EAF is the F-16 most of them block-52, also, the Rafale was recently introduced along Mig-29m(odd yeah?). They also mainly rely on C-130s for transport, as for Helis, they have AH-64s CH-47s Mi-8/17 and a bunch of mi-35s. A weird mix of soviet and US inventory. Same is also true for all branches, for example standard issue Rifle is sig516 but other branches use the ak platform along arx-160 rifles...

34:04 So the Cloverfield thing is actually a Place called Madinty which is a sort of privately owned city, more like a huge gated community but isn't really gated. while the things on the right is what's called the new administrative capital (A very creative name) where everything is bound to be moved to there. And at 34:52 that is Capital airport which is an AFB that got a new runway and a terminal and is used as a passenger/cargo airport.

If you fly south of Eilat on the Aqaba side, you'll be flying over a sunken Tristar and then (after the docks) you'll be flying over a sunken Hercules. In Eilat (just North of by the border) there's also a Patriot anti-missile station. Hope you guys have fun here :)
As usual, great video on an exciting map. But Romal got into Tunisia and Trubrook in a 10 miile strip. The SAS patrolled the Desert to the south of Suez, from Alexandrea, Cirio

Crazy how things happen sometimes. I just watched this last night and heard Simba talking about Petra (which I've never heard of). Tonight I turn on the Science Channel and guess what's on??? "The Lost Treasures of Petra"...Exploring the historic city of Petra (2014). WOW! 😳... It was at the end of the show when I tuned in, so I'll watch the repeat at work in a few hours. Really looking forward to this awesome map!
