Get German or Swiss made precision drivers, and a Vessel set for JIS. Tiny screws are easy to strip out and a huge pain to remove once stripped. A removable bit set is a good option if you can't get an individual driver... but individual drivers are generally your best choice.

I have Wiha, Wera, Klein, Gedore, Felo, Snap On and PB Swiss. They are all nice, but the PB Swiss with the Swiss grip are my favorites.

Hi Doug/Doc? Just FYI: changing the button on the phone will result in non-working phones. The security chips inside the button make sure that each button/iPhone pair are un-separable. Kind regards

Thanks. I've heard that with the newer phones. This one is fairly old, but I'll have to see. From what I've read, the phone will likely lose its touch ID feature, and the button will operate only as a button. Also, there are some workarounds I've heard of. Either way, its fun to try and fix a broken phone.

Excellent review, many new info to me. To my experience the handle is critical in those tools, some has terrible grip. I have Wiha and Wera from Germany, l preffer Wiha handles.

You need to try the Wiha drivers. There is a reason they are industry standard pretty much everywhere. I've never seen anyone buy a Snap On precision driver for electronics out in the wild.

Glad to see ifixit has an alumnium precision screwdriver. I had to replace a hard drive in my iMac and I bought a hard drive swap kit that included the holder and 3 bits or so. I was not impressed with the plastic one. I’ll definitely look into that full kit with the aluminum handle though.

Good video Doc, I'd have guessed you would have had the Wera Kraftform precision driver set. They make a big set of like 6 styles (torx, flat, hex, Phillips, ball hex, etc) in about a 30pc fold up wrap set. Haven't used them but they do look decent & Ive got them on my list.

Just got the torx set of the snap on precision electronic ones in the foam, havnt tried yet. I'll probably use them to take apart my pocket knives and stuff, those little t6 and t8 fasteners are easy to destroy lol along with the driver itself

Tbh the JIS driver is vastly superior to the PH one, even for PH screws. They sit slightly deeper into the screw head so they dont cam out anywhere near as often as PH drivers do. JIS drivers and bits are pretty sought after because of this, even more so with rumors that Japan is phasing them out to fit the international market more.
But yeah your point was still well taken!

You should become an ergonomics engineer. Worked at a biotechnology research department as a student ( I was a pleb nothing fancy) Fascinating field of study with every industry conceivable. From tool companies, to medical and even the military spends a lot of money in R&D. Anything from prosthetics to weapon design for accuracy. The greater the comfort, the greater the accuracy with less fatigue, increasing productivity. They even equated cancer through mathematics to insure different specialists communicate the same diagnosis and everyone is in the same page. ( Trying to avoid a cenario with 5 different specialist having 5 different diagnosis) Really cool.

Regarding the iFixit screwdrivers, there are two versions ? why does one have a plastic grip and the other aluminum ?

Great video! I have the Ifixit kit too and have gone through plenty of laptops and other small electronics. Do you have the regular snap on bit set (SDM400)? I recently picked up a snap on kit with a regular ratcheting screwdriver and the stubby one and it had that bit set in the kit (SGDMRC108A). Got it for 200 CAD basically brand new. Is the bit set any good?

I have many individual SO bits, but no boxed sets beyond some that are included in a driver extension set. I have a full MAC set among others. A long time ago I have the Snap On ratcheting mini screwdriver set, but hated the thing. The ratchet was only left or right, no fixed position causing any back and forth adjustment of a fastener's tightness requiring a constant flipping of the direction switch. The small SO bits were excellent.
