    Finally a really amazing description of what exactly visual weight is. I used to think my face's visual weight was high, but without any make up, it's actually rather low. In profile my nose has a tad bit of a higher visual weight, but only slightly. And of course it also depends on the lighting (sometimes my cheekbones look prominent and defined vs in other light settings they don't draw any shadows at all). I find it very easy to play around with make up though. I don't know if this is a general rule of thumb but I do feel like people with lower visual weight have an easier time changing their face's overall appearance with make up and lighting.
    I used to think faces with low visual weight are just more flat from the side profile and I thought that's about it.

    @yeahaboutthatthough3656 Před 2 měsíci +6

    When discussing the concept of "visual weight" concerning people's faces, a significant question arises: which society's scale is the observer using to determine what constitutes "heavy" visual weight? It's apparent that an observer's perception of an element of someone else's face is heavily influenced by the uniformity of faces in their surroundings and the prevalent features there. For instance, in a remote African village, every aspect of an Anglo person's face will stand out significantly. Conversely, in China, features of an indigenous African face will carry noticeable visual weight to just about every native Chinese observer.
    These examples illustrate the arbitrary nature of "visual weight" when applied to human phenotypes, revealing its inherent flaws. For instance, fuller lips may appear "heavy" in a community or in a media landscape where most lips we are collectively exposed to are thin, thus carrying substantial visual weight. However, among individuals with similar genetics, full lips might not stand out at all for their size because everyone's lips are full there. Perhaps it's more appropriate to confine the concept of visual weight to discussions of art and composition, where it belongs. Otherwise, it risks uncomfortably veering into discussions about eugenics and other misguided notions about genetics that should be consigned to the annals of history.

    I have low visual weight when I wear no makeup because nothing stands out, but when I make up my eyes with eyeliner, my eyes become a striking feature and I get a lot of compliments. But I look not memorable if I don't cheat with make up. Angelina jolie has both big lips and feline eyes and an interesting beauty spot in the corner of one eye, so she has high visual weight everywhere. I also believe that one is drawn to things he is most attracted to. Most people look at eyes first because they are said to be the window to the soul. I know a girl who has striking features, but I always look at her lips because they are abnormally thin. Like, she has no lips at all. Doesn't mean she has strikingly beautiful lips and hence visual weight.

    Just try a lot of make up and different looks. If you always look like a completely new person then chances are high you have low visual weight. If you have trouble to look differently then your face is very strong and always shines through.
    I also feel like people with very high facial weight have to decide which features they want to accentuate because it can look too much if everything in your face is competing with each other.

    It's simmetry and harmony that people are looking for in other people.Clear skin with red undertone too and full head of hair with a nice smile...but eyes are still the most important feature of them all...including height for Males.

    You puzzle me very often.. Brad Pitts features are pretty common in north west Germany / north east Netherlands. Hajo Füllgrabe is a " more common " version of him.. I tend to much more leaner and longer faces like Keanu Reeves etc?????????

    Even though high visual weight/striking features are the beauty standard for western celebrities, I'm not convinced it's true for every-day people in real life. It would be difficult to study because striking features will generally always look better than balanced and soft features in photographs. Because of this, the rating of attractiveness of people in photos (as is usually done when studying beauty and attraction) probably doesn't accurately represent how the population would rate the same people in real life.

    2:37 editing this, It would really help if you slow down not only the pace of your speech, but the motion that starts right when the text appears.
    For instance, I had to rewind and pause to catch what the text said there. Please don't be in such a hurry. Moving the pictures as soon as the text appears makes it impossible to read, especially in the beginning stage of your video where you're explaining the foundations of the concept. Speed is not the same as engagement with your audience.
    Is there any way you can change this after having posted it? Thanks for the overall lesson
