  • This video shows how to replace the top and bottom gear selector bushes on a Volkswagen Transporter T4.
    As already stated in the video, it is not necessary to remove all the components i did to replace the bushes, it just made it easier to show what needed to be done and it was a much clearer view of what's happening. The battery died when i put the gear selector bush in, so have no footage of this but its the same as the other bushes i show.
    Yes there is one bush that was not replaced that very much needed to be. It did not arrive with the other bushes and the van needed to be used so the repair could not be postponed.
    Feel free to ask any questions in the comments below. I will help if i can.
    Thanks for watching the video and if it helps in anyway and you would care to support me by leaving a one off tip then please follow the link below.

Day four I will drain all of the coolant remove the diesel water heater and associated plumbing which is making this seemingly fiddly job almost impossible . this is a nightmare of a job on a 2001 VW caravelle 2.5 TDI. good luck to anyone attempting this seemingly cheap repair .

      Sorry, off the top of my head i don`t. If you want to buy from VW, just call with your reg or chassis number and they can tell you the part numbers. If your UK based i use a company called Just Kampers, have had nothing but excellent service from them every time i have ordered anything. They sell complete repair kits as well for the linkages.

      You might get lucky. Sometimes, depending on how dirty the linkage is, it can be quite easy to see where it used to sit before it was removed. Just get under there with a good light and hope for the best.

    A question, if I may. About 2.35min in you removed the three allen bolts under the left hand (larger) bush bracket. Did I see you were using a 1/4" drive ratchet with a 6mm allen socket? I am curious to know what you used to get the rear allen bolt out (the one nearest the bulkhead) as the top of the gearbox is very tight there. It looks like you are working on a RHD model, mine is LHD so a little less space to work.
    I have just managed to get those three allen bolts out using a combination of some new allen keys I have modified to shape and length, what a pain! So any pointers as to how to get those bolts back in quicker would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    • @ford873
      @ford873  Před rokem

      Yeah it was very tight for space there. If I recall as it was a while ago, I used a Allen key with a 90 degree bent end. Then I put a small pair of mole grips on the bent end with the long thin straight end into the top of the bolt.

    Hi, (3rd time lucky i hope)
    Thank you for this, it's been very helpful.
    I'm hoping you can help me a little,
    I ordered some items to help me do this job (or part of it, but all the components i received, were made of a hard, rigid plastic.
    can you confirm if they should be a slightly flexible rubber-ish or silicone, before i A) - try to force something that simply 'won't go' and/or B) make a fool of myself complaining about the product

    • @ford873
      @ford873  Před rokem +1

      Its all pretty fairly solid. As its the gear linkage you don't really want it soft and floppy. That's why I put it in the hot water to soften them up and make them slightly easier to slide on. With that and plenty of grease you shouldn't really have any issues.

    • @danielslade3048
